The global economy is in free fall towards recession. We are in recession. Globally that is. It’s just gonna take a little more time for smaller economies and for us proles to feel it.

My employer – global corporate – saw this six moths ago and started drawing up plans to batten down the hatches. As we entered this new financial year, it was unusually slashy and burny given our strong results.

Strap in folks. It’s gonna be another heavy few years.

I watched the BBC News item on Greta – a teenage guru on climate change. 2 weeks on-board a catamaran to cross the Atlantic, she didn’t want to leave carbon foot-prints when she arrives in New York to address an audience about climate change? The toilet facilities appear to be a bucket on deck. Same clothes for two weeks, perhaps for her return – I’m guessing she’ll have her parents book Lufthansa .

Yes. no toilet or shower facilities built in. I wonder will she poolute the ocean with untreated sewage.
And the boat – the manufacture of that and it’s underwater turbines, it’s solar panels and batteries wouldn’t have been zero emission.

Has ever a teenager has created soo much hatred and bile against her – just because she’s pointed out that the emperor has no clothes and we are flubbing up the earth’s climate beyond all recognition.
Fair play to her – she’s doing more in a week than the rest of us would do in a lifetime

And then there are the class acts who joke – or maybe hope – her boat sinks…. filthy scum. You know, those ‘Nigel’ types….

Agreed lads. She is 16 and making an effort. The “criticism” is pathetic bullying.

Point taken Cian and will be refuted on another thread – probably showing further increases in the homeless figures.

Why guess something negative about this when you can take 10 seconds to research that she’s doing the round trip on the yacht?

Yesterday: Telling 24 year old YFG lad to shut up and listen is bad.
Today: This 16 year old is a legitimate target for attack.

As someone who has sailed many seas I wish her the best; however, she obviously won’t be alone and she’ll have every comfort a 60ft yacht has to offer – including a crew. It’s no mean feat at any age to undertake such a journey.

Tighten your belts and cancel the Electric Picnic along with other consumer distractions. We’re headed for an economic slump and I don’t blame Mr. Putin.

The FG ‘greeneness’ rears it’s head once again with the announcement that the grants for retrofits are finished. And there was Bruton telling us 2 months ago that there was still €6m of this years €7m allocation still available.
He isn’t even a good liar.

Don’t blame Richard, he was probably distracted by approving all those exploration licences for Chinese and Chinese-back fossil fuel companies off the south coast. Or maybe trying to justify the €5 (five) billion cost of the National Broadband Plan. No wonder he needs to distract us with the RTE household charge and handing collection over to bully boys in the private sector.

+ 1 She’s not the first teenager to hop out a window. Shame her adventure had such a sad end.

Oh get down off your high horse. Teenage rebellion often disregards disability. She was clearly excited to be in the rainforest and wanted to explore.

“I’ve got two tickets to Iron Maiden, baby
Come with me Friday, don’t say maybe
I’m just a teenage dirtbag, baby, like you ooh”

          2. dav

Again Lilly, are you aware of how disabled she was? Because if you were, you would see how wrong your statement is.

Shocking that she was wandering around for (days, did the autopsy establish time/date of death?) within a mile of the villa with an army looking for her and she wasn’t found?

“The family’s spokesman Matthew Searle, of the Lucie Blackman Trust, said they still have “a large amount of questions”” says the Sun.

I’ve known many children “missing” , with teams of searchers calling out their names too frightened/overwhelmed to answer back. In fact one little lad crawled under a car , lay flat on his belly for hours there , terrified to announce himself. Use “what3words” download on smartphone to pinpoint a location is handy for parents. Chances are Nora spotted a beautifully coloured bird /cute little animal and took off , not realising the danger. As distressing as it is, it is positive the little darling wasn’t violated. R.I. P. Condolences to her family who have shown enormous dignity throughout this tragic ordeal.

        1. Spaghetti Hoop

          +1
Relieved that she wasn’t attacked but it’s no less an awful tragedy for that family. A 3yr old Cork boy drowned in a swimming pool in Spain this week too. RIP both. So many hidden dangers to kids when on holiday.

        2. eoin

It’s her family which strongly suggested malfeasance at the start, it’s the family’s spokesman who now says they still have a lot of questions.

    3. Fade Street Intellectual

Granted the speculative rish Times article by Lara Marlowe is deeply unhelpful and unwise (diabolique?); but let Nóra and her family be and not a vehicle to sell newspapers or garner clicks.

Flights suspended at de facto US military base Shannon Airport after US military plane catches fire. Surely they weren’t carrying munitions which is against the terms of the base [which now has one permanent US military representative]. Maybe, our brave media should ask the permanent US military representative for a comment.
