UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Tanaiste Simon Coveney in 2017

This afternoon.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is meeting German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin around about NOW where he is expected to reiterate his call for the backstop to be scrapped.

Via BBC:

Mr Johnson has said the arrangement to avoid a hard border after Brexit is “anti-democratic” and must be removed to secure a deal.

But the EU has rejected the possibility of any changes to the backstop.

Mr Coveney said the government will not abandon its approach for “some kind of promise on the basis of trust”.

“We are not in the business of being steam-rolled at the end of this because a British prime minister has rolled out new red lines,” he said.

Earlier:

“The UK government needs to take responsibility for its choices before it is too late. Prime Minister Johnson’s hero is Winston Churchill and he seems to view himself as a modern day Churchill.

“However, in the event of a no deal Brexit, the UK government’s only Churchilian legacy will be –‘never have so few done so much damage to so many’.”

“Boris Johnson is refusing to sit down for talks with EU leaders until they agree to ditch the Irish backstop from the Brexit withdrawal agreement, despite invitations to meetings from the German chancellor, Angela Merkel, and the French president, Emmanuel Macron.

His official spokeswoman said the prime minister had made clear that he wanted to strike a deal, but that there was no point in holding face-to-face talks unless the EU agreed to reopen the agreement.”

      What a flake.

Good man Boris – subtext of Phil Hogan’s statement is a tie to the customs union and an eventual rejoining…..not what the people voted for. Out means out.

Out means out. Step 1 is accept the WA they negotiated over almost 3 years. Step 2 is work out the future relationship.

Step 1 comes first though and this little tour of EU leaders isn’t going to change that simple fact.

Even if they leave with no deal they’ll be trying to come back and negotiate a future relationship from a much weaker position. Why would the EU trust them in negotiations after they walked away from the outcome of the previous negotiations?

“Boris Johnson receives boos and shouts of ‘liar’ & ‘stop #Brexit’ as he meets Angela Merkel in Berlin”

At least that Carrie Symonds wan doesn’t need a visa to travel from London to Berlin, but sheesh, show some decorum girl.
