“I have a total irreverence for anything connected with society except that which makes the roads safer, the beer stronger, the food cheaper and the old men and old women warmer in the winter”
In awe of this #brendanbehan mural which popped up in the North Inner City this week. pic.twitter.com/bR5kWjSvNW

In fairness.
Artist, anyone?
Meanwhile…
Yesterday.
Waterford city.
John Gallen writes:
A small teaser of three of the new walls to be seen for 2019’s Waterford Walls this weekend,
Of the three pieces pictured…
Artist: Taquen – image of a woman. Can be seen on Thomas Street .
Artist: Colour Hive – image under the archway. Can be seen under the arch on Great George’s Street.
Artist: Nina Valkhoff – green image with foxes. Can be seen on Gracedieu Road.
Waterford Walls is a brilliant concept.
“Artist” or “vandal committing criminal damage”
Artist. Next question, caller.
Any idea where in North Dublin it is?
Richmond Cottages? That’s North Circular Road I think?*
open to correction
:D
I’m rubbish at Dublin geography so you’ve just made my day
are you coming out as a non dub !
Ah Millie, I was born 100 yards from that… still no blue plaque mind you!
Ah no I’m a true blue dub. My mother was born just off Mountjoy Sq. and my dad’s family are from the clontarf area. I just have no sense of direction.
Bert, if I were to go knocking nowadays round them parts, would I be able to find you in a romantic meet-cute?
I suspect that, if I were ever to meet you, I’d go straight home and leave that day with all of my stuff in bin liners.
that’s the dublin/country divide laid bare
Richmond Cottages. Between O’Connell Schools and Ballybough. Won’t get much in the way of passing traffic. Richmond Cottages is where the Scissors Sisters carried out their dastardly work.
Behan’s tipple there looks like the champagne and sherry concoction he was rather fond of. Or is it a near-empty pint of porter?? Hard to make out.
Fine mural.
mixed feelings around the behan and booze thing always being front and centre
a great writer above all else
Indeed, my favourite writer, must take a trip in to see this.
Well worth reading Michael O’Sullivan’s biography. Behan packed a lot into a short life.
Ulick O’Connor’s book is decent also
Yeah I know. A generation of oul fellas will testify that Behan was an absolute b when encountered in the streets, bars and buses of Dublin. Shure isn’t everyone when well-oiled, genius or not.
I had an uncle who was barred from all the same places as Behan and Kavanagh, so they ended up drinking together a fair bit. A right miserable shower of louts they were when in drink. Abusive, maudlin auld men stinking of their own wee.
How romantic
Mind you, in true Irish begrudgery, many witnesses would be quite vocal about this loutishness in order to tarnish their talents somewhat, in the vein of ‘same as the next man’. There were a select embittered few Camden (London)-based folk who would do this with Amy Winehouse too, deriding her as she stumbled from pub to pub, happy that fame had its dark side exposed.
True enough Spag – it was hardly unusual, but it was elevated to a sort of pedestal in case anyone got the idea that they might have been more talented than the rest of us.
P.S. – If I knew I wasn’t allowed to use that word, i’d have said egesta.
Wasn’t it your good self that mentioned the great story about Behan, Kavanagh and Flann O’Brien standing on Grafton St lamenting the lack of characters left in Dublin?
His diabetes was largely attributed to that Champagne and Sherry concoction.
Nina Valkhoff’s pic of the foxes is missing there ;)
Wonderful stuff! I would love to have even half their talent.
Anyone see the David Attenborough on SCR/ Longwood Avenue
I just googled it, nice colour for sure but his likeness is not quite right, I find it hard to be critical of these murals though, a wonderful art
Same here
Nice work. We need more street art like this.
