Bearing in mind the potentially dire circumstances regarding Britain leaving the EU, as cynical as it may sound, Leo et al., must be delighted they can deflect from other important issues such as health-hospitals, cervical check, rental-housing crises, NBP, PSC, NCH etc…

Brexit is their manna from heaven.

BTW, are they still on holidays? Not that it matters, really.

    1. eoin

They’re on holidays for another 10 days. They’ve had nearly 10 weeks holidays compared to five in the UK.

      1. Cian

The Dáil is on a break. That doesn’t mean the ministers are on a 10 week break. They are still at
        work.

Is there any pressing legislation that needs to be debated?

          1. Cian

+1 But is this not a civil service job? To prepare legislation to be debated? Or the minister to give them the direction.

I was waiting for the train to Galway from Portarlington last Monday, waiting from around 6am… and as three or four trains to Dublin came and went, I counted ten (and there was possibly more) of those little electric scooters…
I hadn’t realised they were so popular with commuters.

  2. GiggidyGoo

Time Michéal Martin and his buddies in FF grew a pair and call a halt to the Lord Of The Flies government. Boys pretending to be adults. Leo going around ‘warning’ other countries leaders. What a gobs…
Three years and two months since the UK referendum on Brexit, and the seriousness of the situation still hasn’t sunk in. Soundbites don’t hack it. Little, token, preparation. Hoping the UK will reverse the course they’re taking, and if not, hoping for a loan (bail out) from the EU to tide us over in the short term. Utter idiots.

    1. Cathal

I think they’ve finally read the writing on the wall but it’s to late ,UK will leave EU sometime between now and Christmas leaving the Irish government without a clue. The mindset of FFG that Brexit could never happen, that the EU would never let it happen. Now it’s happening even if Boris’ has to resign for a few weeks to force an election, which will likely see a Tory/Brexit party coalition which won’t be good for either Ireland or the UK . Varadker may be the
FG leaderr that finally finishes off their wretched party.

      1. MaryLou's ArmaLite

What exactly is written on the wall, and who wrote it?

In case you haven’t been paying attention the UK government is having a bit of a civil war, indeed the main political parties are having their own civil wars, so until that is resolved anything written on any walls is just graffiti.

Please do tell what you want them to do differently? The British government is a rabble. Have you noticed them demand compromise from the EU but are not willing to compromise themselves. They can destroy their economy if they like but why should Ireland facilitate it.

      1. some old queen

The timing of talking up no deal when the HP has just voted it against it is not a coincidence- it is strategic. Johnson will go to the EU for another extension- he has no choice. And so it trundles on until a general election or a second referendum. But they won’t give another vote because Remain would win- even Moggs has admitted that.

As for the online critics- they have no answers either. FF would not do anything differently- mainly because there is nothing to do. It is a wait and see game. I spoke to someone who lives in Kent yesterday and she sees no evidence of preparations for it- at all.

        1. Cú Chulainn

There are coordinated speeches and reports issued in the EU, Ireland and the UK. The glimmer of hope, as I see it, is that for all the ‘we will starve the Irish’ and the extreme hostility from the UK government to Ireland, there are enough people in the UK who are not going along with the hateful bullying. The election will take place before Christmas in the UK. I suspect a sneaky one here as well. And the process of a gentle healing will begin. We hope.

          1. some old queen

I think am going to stop commenting on broadsheet.ie- the legal implications are perfectly fine but when at the weekend a juvenile minded rectum deletes or edits at random to the point that you need to record everything by screen-grab- something is seriously wrong.

I get the free speech thing and the blow back against the angry lesbians but ffs- we’re heading into the biggest Irish crisis since before the signing of the GFA- either do the journalistic job you criticise others of not doing or -close the site down.

“No surprises for farmers and small businesses vows Varadkar” reports the Examiner.

      “Vows”

This is the same lot which is shocked, shocked I tells ya, that people have been “surprised” this week at talk of border controls. Coveney cannot understand you people at all, hasn’t he been telling you for ages that border controls were on the way? Why are ye so thick that you can’t remember his warnings? And yes, it was reported in the Irish Times this week that FG ministers themselves were “shocked” at the 5-hour briefing by Coveney and Paschal at a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday night in Dublin. But they’re just FG ministers. You, on the other hand, have no reason whatsoever to be shocked.

This is just a textbook example of gaslighting, isn’t it.

D4bes getting nervous for her €300,000+ cash cow.
Let RTE die. It’s not public service broadcasting. It’s a propaganda machine.

    1. Cathal

RTE can’t grasp that they are hanging on to yesterday. Downsizing seems to be beyond their comprehension , Notions that very average presenters are worth wages that are multiples of their talent. Making programmes aimed at no one is considered good practise ? RTE board must still think it’s 1978.

      1. f_lawless

In the grip of a kind of collective psychosis, I have to wonder. Out of touch with present day reality- As our capitalist society evolves inevitably toward vastly uneven levels of wealth distribution , these people creaming it lack the empathy, vision or desire to change course for the greater good

      2. GiggidyGoo

Paying for chefs to go out on foreign holidays, do a few minutes of mmmmmmm, mmmmmmm, mmmmmm per weeks.

Paying for a hotelier to do similar.

Paying for ‘celebrities’ (Dana, Mr. Legs from Crystal Swing etc.) in Celebrity Globetrotters

Always the foreign trips. RTE (we are paying for this drivel – home grown entertainment?) just love the deep pockets on FFGLAB (us in other words) that can finance the purchase of these ‘shows’.

And that’s apart from the money (ours again) that they throw at mediocre presenters.

        And D4bes wants more?

        1. eoin

And the European Broadcasting Union, the secretive Swiss based business, to which RTE pays a membership of €500,000 a year plus around €1.5 million for rights excluding sports rights and, for which RTE incurs more than €300,000 for the Eurovision.

Anyone know what the ex-DG of RTE, Noel Curran gets at the EBU which he now heads? No? Is that because the EBU doesn’t publish full audited accounts? I reckon he’s on the guts of €1 million a year. But who knows. All we know is loss-making RTE shovels millions into it each year for fupp all of any real value in return. We should resign, I’m sure they could get someone to take our place, Brunei maybe.

        2. GiggidyGoo

And just when you thought the foreign holidays were at their maximum, we now have another junket program starting on Monday on RTE. ‘My big day – home and away’ Yep, ferrying/flying people to foreign places under the guise of a battle of wedding planners. And D4bes wants us to finance that too.

      3. Clampers Outside

Agreed on the pay, but by what measure are you judging the programming viewership performance?
It would appear you are doing so from a personal taste position.
Why? because RTE TV ratings are streets ahead of most, if not all other European public broadcasters and annually on a par with BBC’s for pulling in high percentages of viewers.

Them’s the facts, the demonstrable facts, year in year out.

        1. GiggidyGoo

I don’t know of anyone personally how was asked for their opinions, to include in ratings. Are they calculated in the same manner as RedC polls for instance?

    2. Otis Blue

Right on cue, up she pops again. She’s absolutely clueless. No strategy, no innovation, no reform. Banging the same friggin’ drum. Just suck hard on the taxpayer teat so as “to maintain RTE in its current form”.

      No thanks.

Btw how did Tubridy’s new chair work out tonight?

    3. eoin

RTE did suffer during the last recession, that is true, it made a loss of €65 million in 2012. But then they tried to turn things round and the economy began to recover. It made a €700,000 surplus in 2013, €200,000 surplus in 2014. Dee Forbes takes over in 2016. It makes a loss of €19m in 2016. It makes a loss of €6m in 2017 and last year, it makes a loss of €13m. According to insiders, it’s set to make another seven digit loss in 2019.

Dee Forbes has been selling off the jewels, Montrose land was sold for €108 million. They sold off spectrum in the UK and they’re looking at selling the RTE Guide. They have totally squandered the proceeds. They’ve made millionaires out of presenters in their early 50s with golden goodbyes, they spent €2 million upgrading Marconi House to be a creche for 70 RTE toddlers. They’ve been feathering their own nests. And now, the money is gone, or at least, it will be in the next 18 months.

So, what now, they’re suppressing news about the National Broadband Plan (no RTE News item on the recent NBP report). They’re not keeping tabs on the NCH. And has anyone from RTE asked if Regina has gone to the Circuit Court yet to contest the illegality of her actions. RTE ignores housing with its “environment correspondent” [which is supposed to cover housing, local govt and environmental issues] missing in action. It’s news and current affairs is at the community radio and local TV standard.

And don’t even get me started on the mediocre sliver of urine on €495,000.

Stick it in examinership, repudiate the contracts with non-staff “talent”, fire half the news and current affairs lot, especially the ones who are there through nepotism and little else and produce a plan which cuts your cloth according to your means, a la 2013 and 2014.

      1. GiggidyGoo

Who knows – it’s a semi state company – maybe FGs commander in chief might buy it (at a discount, and with a loan/write-off from us)

Most of the papers cover the funeral of the punk who has become the first fatality in the fight for the €100,000-a-week drug business around Drogheda, Meath and south Louth.

Have any of our brave media asked what cars the deceased, a 29-year old thug who was fired from his baggage handling job at Dublin airport in 2017, was driving, how many cash businesses he was “managing”, how much that holiday mobile home in Carlingford was worth and how he was affording an extension? Of course not, “he was a bubbly character, full of life, who made a big impression on his family and was loved deeply by them.”

Even the estimable Peter Murtagh at the Irish Times leaves his journalistic credentials outside the church.

All of our media are quoting the local Garda superintendent claiming the guards are making great progress. Remind us again, Garda, is it true there hasn’t been any significant drugs seizure (>€50k) for over a year, despite the two gangs selling around €100,000 a week? And that any assets seized were for car tax and related offences? And the day of action on the eve of the local elections in May was around car tax and motoring offences even though you painted it as an anti-gang initiative? And none of the gang leaders has been jailed? And that the gangs have amassed more than €5 million in the past year alone? And that the Garda approach is to contain the violence [which it’s not doing very well, now, is it] and not confront the underlying drug dealing?

Irish crime media, ladies and gentlemen. More like, criminal Irish media.

    1. Cú Chulainn

+1m.. you’re on fire this morning Eoin. Any mention of how the (absolutely poo quality drugs – might explain the violence) are finding their way to the gangs ?

  5. eoin

Everyone’s favorite anti-unicornist has added to an ever lengthening list that she’s suing.

After Panti, that Grimes fellow and Village, she’s now suing Piaras Mac Einri. Again, she’s represented by Kevin Winters’s lot, Kevin being a highly regarded human rights solicitor. What ever happened you, man?

    1. some old queen

That is quite a list now- and a LOT of money if they are all actually followed up by actions.

Something I have been wondering about social media companies- if they ban an individual, how to do they ensure that person does not just create another anonymous account? Because if sock puppets are anything to go by, Twitter in particular are not doing a very good job of it.

The thought of Hogan being in the driving seat for a post crash-out Sasamach gives me the warm fuzzies.

It could be a win-win, as the British will really need to sharpen their pencils for the years of trudging back and forth to Brussels and Strasbourg, while we’ll see the back of him for another few years.

For added schadenfreude, the Trade Commissioner might relocate for the duration to the offices at the Winston Churchill building in Strasbourg?

    1. GiggidyGoo

Doherty is gone come next election. Her constituents will make sure McEntee is re elected after the Dail corridor comments, after the PSC debacle, and after the sell out by FG of the farmers. There’s only on FG seat now between the two of them. Compare McEntee and her professional representation on the European stage against Doherty and her long list of failures.
In the meantime, seeing as the Dail hasn’t been officially notified of Bailey not being Chairperson, which suggests she is still collecting payment, has Doherty paid back her overpayment for the contrived promotion?

Right on cue we have the SINDO with Dee Finger Wagging and Miriam “Because I am Woth It” O’Costalot PR rolled out on the same. We know what SINDO ‘readers’ want to read…

  7. Ron

But wait… everyone on here said there would be no border..

The language was always going to soften, like everyone was told, and Leo Varadkar and Michael Martin’s pathetic legacy will be that we returned to a border in Northern Ireland with all of the troubles associated with that on their watch, and mark my words, there will be an escalation of violence.

Pathetic state of affairs and even more pathetic is the idiocracy of the impotent electorate that allow him to continue every single day. Literally everything he has touched with his incompetence has turned into a faeces show and you all let him do it, because he smarter than the people voting for him

While our brave media are self-pleasuring themselves to the media-politics echo chamber at that summer school in Wexford, there’s another summer school that seems to have been completely ignored.

Named after the homeless woman who died in very difficult circumstances, it has a strong line-up of speakers, I hope BS will give some time to the presentations next week.
