Again, this is RTE doing its devious best to frame the debate around its finances “what services do you want us to drop or what assets do you want us to keep”. It’s like that “do you want tea or coffee” when you really don’t want a beverage at all.
To repeat it until I’m blue in the face, RTE was capable of providing all its services in 2013 and 2014 and still make a small surplus. Despite claims to the contrary, RTE’s revenue has increased in the past five years through Brexit and the encroachment of internet advertising. What’s happened is Dee Forbes couldn’t manage her way out of a paper bag. She joined in 2016 and RTE has made a €40m loss since. It has sold off €120m of assets, the proceeds from which it has largely squandered and yet, it is facing financial ruin in the next 18 months. Fire Dee Forbes now, she’s useless.

RTE engaged London-based Chambers Communications to analyse its woes. Seems the only thing they came up with is RTE “superserves” its older audience and needs to get down with the kids.

For entertainment purposes only [because their polling has not been on the money in recent times at all]. Red C poll in the SBP. Political party [and European Parliament grouping]
The Shinners are down at 12%, their lowest in three years, and down 2% from GE16. Within the margins, SF could be as low as 9% and Greens could be as high as 10% and Labour as high as 9%.
Of course SF could be as high as 15%, so who knows. But there are some who think SF has not addressed the difficulties which led to the power presidential showing last year and the fairly awful local election and EP [Republic] results in May. I can easily see SF losing 8 of their 21 (down from 23 in GE16 after Peadar and Carol were kicked out) TDs. And, on a good day for them, I can see the Greens and Labour overtaking them.

To be fair to Mary Lou, surely you’ve got to look at who else could hold the mantle of leader. In the North, Michelle O’Neill is being challenged by John O’Dowd – it’s frustrating to watch the unravelling of a party that promised to be a real contender in Irish politics. The key players in SF are gone, or departed, which weakened the Party – similarly with The SDLP when John Hume and Seamus Mallon retired. It’s clear there’s a diminished support for SF, whether it’s a question of leadership remains to be seen. On a personal level, I had reason to contact my MLA for South Belfast, Máirtín O’ Muilleoir – there was an issue with the constituency office’s phone system (apparently). I didn’t meet, nor talk to Máirtín – I was left wondering, why did I vote for him? Grass roots are where the problems lay.

Anyone know what’s up with Dermot Desmond, Ireland’s #5 richest person (behind the glorified knackeryman Larry Goodman but ahead of the Siteserv billionaire)?
Dermot’s stake in INM has been sold, though Dermot is still relevant to the investigation by the corporate watchdog and the allegation that INM was being run in the interest of its two biggest shareholders.
Dermot’s Latvian bank appears to have finally stabilised after the money laundering clampdown, which saw it lose half its deposits, but there’s no mention of the €80m French tax evasion fine in its latest quarterly accounts, suggesting that the appeal is a lost cause.
Dermot’s Datalex AGM will be on Tuesday in Dublin. The company is still suspended from the stock exchange for financial irregularities.
Dermot’s sale of the Barchester health group has stalled, it was announced a year ago that it was being placed on the market, but there haven’t been any takers and there are concerns about the group’s true value.
In Dublin, Dermot has just liquidated his QED company in the IFSC
And early next year, Dermot is set for a court showdown with a bankruptcy official about the purchase of a property on Shewsbury Road.

Interesting developments in Oughterard, Co Galway yesterday- a silent procession of between 800 and 1000 people holding placards saying ‘Oughterard says no to inhumane Direct Provision centres’- a protest against the system rather than the people being the message.
There have been accusations that the previous meeting was organised by far right associates who at the time did not declare their affiliations- so it looks like the locals have copped on now and are taking control- good for them.
Meanwhile Government has issued a €65 million tender to build new Direct Provision centers in four counties of Kildare, Wicklow, Meath and Louth. But, if as stated they don’t know how many centres or how many will be accommodated- what exactly are they tendering for?
One important distinction to make is that these people are not refugees. Refugees are invited into the country and given automatic settled status while asylum seekers are processed on merit- if I am wrong on that then can someone correct please?

I’ll stand to be corrected but is sexual orientation a grounds for claiming refugee status? Isn’t a refugee defined as
“any person who … owing to well-founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group or political opinion, is outside the country of his nationality and is unable to, or owing to such fear, is unwilling to avail himself of the protection of that country.”
If Ireland accepts sexual orientation as valid grounds to grant asylum, then there are literally hundreds of millions of potential refugees that just need get a Ryanair ticket to Dublin and bingo!
shayna
I was in Portugal, until I returned to the Black North of Ireland mid-week. I tried explaining Direct Provision to fellow travellers (I stay in hostels, very communal) – it’s beyond anyone’s belief that this is how Ireland treats refugees. Coaches full arriving to the West to abandoned hotels and such – not allowed to work. It’s sanctuary bordering on gulag.
Interesting. Is this the first time that it has been reported [in the Sunday Times] that James Osborne died by suicide in 2017? “An inquest returned a verdict of death by suicide.” Odd how we don’t report causes of death for certain people or members of certain families.
Anyway, the Sunday Times reports that the well-known and widely regarded businessman James Osborne was subject to a sexual assault allegation at the time of his death by suicide in 2017. The allegation is, 50 years ago, when James was 16, he assaulted a boy at a school in Northern Ireland. A complaint was made to the PSNI at an unknown date in 2016 and James was due to be interviewed by the police 11 days after he died by suicide in July 2017.
The alleged victim is identified by the Sunday Times and he is using the same Northern Ireland law firm beloved by Ireland’s favorite anti-unicornist, to press a claim against both the school and the €15m estate of the late James.
It’s a sad footnote for the late James and of course, he’s not around to defend himself and as the professionals will tell you, suicide is a very complex matter and it is dangerous to ascribe motivation which can be difficult to discern. The way it’s presented in the Sunday Times, you’d think James died by suicide out of shame at the police investigation, but the professionals in the field will tell you this is dangerous speculation.
The Coroner and jury would have facts before them to arrive at conclusion of suicide. But it’s extraordinary that the alleged victim Mr Stephenson is quoted as saying Mr Osborne took his life to evade justice. Why not allow due process to take its course before giving this allegation front page news?

If you continually accuse people with genuine concerns of racism you will send the community in that direction

I used to get the Mail on Sunday but it has lost relevance long ago. Today again their front page has once again a feature that is just taken from their British counterpart about 2 doctors I’ve never heard of. Why can’t they support Irish contributors? Their How to Live Longer top page splash is again just a copy of the UK paper. They were selling well over 100,000 copies about 2 years ago and are now selling about 50,000 according to the circulation figures from last month. I think they laid off quite a few staff a few months back and it clearly shows, so many of the pages in the paper are written by UK writers so they are just dumping stories into the Irish edition. How they can justify charging €3 is beyond me, they’ll soon have a paper like the Sunday Express in Ireland! They’re heading in the exact same trajectory as the Times Ireland edition i.e. put a couple of pages of Irish material in the first few pages and use the UK edition material for the rest. Their daily paper is exactly the same, so much of it is just dumped from its UK sister paper.

No word recently on the Garda investigation on the Courtown assaults. After all that diversionary detail of what they were doing, in the first couple of weeks.
It’s a bone he’s thrown to keep him in the fold. His Department spend doesn’t amount to a great deal and its purpose is to keep County Councils happy. It’s all bread and circuses – a few baubles for the sticks to keep them quiet and craven.
Funnily enough his largesse is such that it’s creating a big problem for Mayo County Council, who appear likely to hike the Local Property Tax by 15%, to meet their share of the financial obligation. It should be noted the Mayo – as with nearly all rural counties – depend on transfers from the LPT Equalisation Fund i.e LPT funds paid by Urban dwellers.
It’s maddening stuff but the real crimes are in Government spending elsewhere.

We offered him to a drink but he said no, we offered him money to get a taxi back but said no- a very dignified man despite why he was here- young males leave Pakistan for Ireland why?
Any link to that tender. I can’t find it on https://irl.eu-supply.com/ctm/Supplier/PublicTenders
Interesting developments in Oughterard, Co Galway yesterday- a silent procession of between 800 and 1000 people holding placards saying ‘Oughterard says no to inhumane Direct Provision centres’- a protest against the system rather than the people being the message.
There have been accusations that the previous meeting was organised by far right associates who at the time did not declare their affiliations- so it looks like the locals have copped on now and are taking control of the situation- good for them.

Meanwhile Government has issued a €65 million tender to build new Direct Provision centers in four counties of Kildare, Wicklow, Meath and Louth. But, if as stated they don’t know how many centers or how many will be accommodated- what exactly are they tendering for?
One important distinction to make is that these people are not refugees. Refugees are invited into the country and given automatic settled status while asylum seekers are processed on merit- if I am wrong on that then can someone correct please?
The media are keen the label anyone who opposes DP centers in their area as racist, people are getting wise to this and framing it differently.
If you continually accuse people with genuine concerns of racism you will send the community in that direction
Possibly- but I am pretty certain that in this case, once locals discovered the background of the meeting organiser, they disassociated themselves double quick and are now presenting a message which is supported by both the anti fascist and migrant groups.
Again repeating the smear.

What’s your point caller?
As Giggidy correctly points out you were pretty rough on him when he expressed sympathy with far right fascists?
You do seem a bit confused on this issue and I don’t mean that in any sort of derogatory way.
Link?
B9- I assume you read the above as expressing sympathy with far right fascists then?
Am I confused? Not really. Shoving up to four people into a hotel room is wrong and telling them they can leave at any time while knowing rightly that the can not, is wrong. Demonising locals for raising genuine concerns is wrong and the DOJ behaving so secretively is wrong.
So many bloody wrongs with this topic.
what genuine concerns did the locals raise?

‘British judge jails Assange indefinitely, despite end of prison sentence’
The continuing torture of Julian Assange by the British establishment
Surely Colm O’Gorman, Amnesty International, has something to say. After all isn’t this exactly why AI was established? Or is AI now just a Colm O’Gorman cash cow but solely for his own personal agenda?
If Julian had a darker complexion Amnesty would be all over this case
And?
No word recently on the Garda investigation on the Courtown assaults. After all that diversionary detail of what they were doing, in the first couple of weeks.
How does Michael Ring get away with this type of sleveen funding scam time after time? https://www.thejournal.ie/michael-ring-rural-clar-funding-scheme-4808773-Sep2019/

Given the amount of energy and insight that “The Sunday Papers” commentary regularly generates, I think it is time that BS live-streamed this with both guest contributors and regular commentators; providing serious competition for the Marian Finucane Basic Brunch Broadcast….
47% still choose Varadkar after everything he has done and more importantly wasn’t capable of doing
47%! I didn’t think there were that many daw jaws in Ireland! Anyone that thinks that Varadkar should be allowed continue needs their head examined. May God have mercy on their soul because they have many challenges being that dim in this country
But there you have it, it’s the impotent Irish electorate in action.
Maybe we should just go back to the Queen, apologise for messing it up and just become part of the commonwealth, because we certainly aren’t capable of running things here
Can I have some of what you’re smoking?
You shouldn’t be smoking. Your long purple hair might catch fire.
And so Ron introduces his Fifth columnist, disciple of Gay Byrne agenda here.
As if anyone listens to that kind of guff anymore.
