Pop goes our mother tongue.

Teenage sensation Joni Morris has already racked up over 20,000 views on YouTube since she posted this mesmerising video of her singing Billie Eilish‘s hit as Gaeilge.

Named after Joni Mitchell, the 14-year-old from Greystones, County Wicklow, cemented her love affair with the Irish language during trips to Colaiste Lurgan in County Galway.

Joni also sings in a trio called Fuze.

Nick says: Billie Irish, anyone?

Incredible! Beautiful voice: I reckon the elder Joni gave her some of her abilities, but she has definitely made them her own.

Which reminds me, I really need to relearn my Gaeilge. I used be as fluent as a secondary school student could be, but 30 years have passed…

Sadly, I am tone deaf. Languages such as the various Chinese and Japanese languages are beyond me :(

I speak as Gaeilge, but I was in The Glenties, earlier in The Summer, the lady in the local store, where I’d just bought a pint of milk – I said, “Go raibh maith agat”. She looked at me as if I had two heads. My accent
offended her? Donegal types, what can I tell you? Do relearn, it’s a great language.
