The #ClimateStrike hasn’t even started yet, but Dublin has showed up en masse! @GretaThunberg @FFFireland pic.twitter.com/gTb9xvLs84

Dublin #ClimateStrike at Customs House right now: “If you’re an adult please move to the back”. These children are literally our best hope for the future. pic.twitter.com/5aIeC5ppbv

This morning
Custom House Quay, Dublin 1.
WE are all going to die.
Horribly.
Alternatively….
3 months of summer holidays for secondary school children in Ireland & not one protest about Climate Change. Third Friday that they’re back to school & now they’re ‘striking’ for Climate change, having been encouraged by our media to do so for weeks. Sorry, I don’t buy it.
— Robert Burke (@robertburke84) September 20, 2019
It’s also another opportunity for our liberal journalists to smell their own farts and brag to their mates overseas about how progressive Ireland is. So they’ll suppress recent polling showing majority are against any Carbon Tax & champion kids given a half-day to #ClimateStrike

FIGHT!

Uncanny.
Couldn’t strike over the summer because most were in Spain on holidays.
Knock the electricity off to their houses for a day and they’ll fold like a cheap suit.
Is there a reason you post under two different names?
+ 100%
Damn straight , carry on doing things the same way we have. Who needs attempts at global movements to save the planet anyway? I’ve had my life, that’s all that matters!! Go Fracking!!!! Vote Trump 2020!! Change is futile!! If any of these kids have a problem with the air quality in a decades time sure we can blame immigration. The lack of oxygen in the atmosphere will pull the wool over most of their eyes!! We could say anything and they will believe it! End stage capitalism!! oh yeah!!!!! Increased crime!!! not a problem . I’ve just invested in G4S private prisons!!! Is all gravy. Now. I’m off to grate rhino hom into my cornflakes to grow the old boy into a super micro penis!!
Good luck to them. But it’s a terribly tame, “approved” protest. Schools and colleges are encouraging their charges to strike.
How can you stick it to the man, if the man is encouraging you and organising you.
The schools encouraged it because the school secretaries are out on strike today because of low pay and crappy hours.
“Secretaries employed by individual school management boards can earn as little as €12,500 a year, only have non-permanent contracts with no occupational pensions, and must sign on when schools are closed.”
Id love an occupational pension but I don’t have an option of one, so I pay into my own pension. Why does the public sector entitle you to an occupational pension?
because the pay scale is lower than private sector so its a trade off between lower wages for life plus pension. Vs Higher wage with uncertain future in whatever field your in. You choose to pay into private pension with the extra disposable income. Its all choice , get a Civil servant job if you want it the other way. Tortoise and the Hare. Its a good story , you should buy a copy from the Amazon app off your iPhone 11 or something.
When carbon tax balloons it will be an easy job for for whichever party in government to point to this moment and tell us… ‘but this is what you want, you marched for it and moreover it’s what your children want’.
This is next level pre-emptive mind control.
+ 1 chilling stuff.
I’d go further and say that it’s also the beginning of a massive global economic stimulation.
diesel and petrol are bad electric is good. home insulation. no more burning of biomass. packaging. farming. etc.
climate extinction doesn’t mark the end of mass consumerism it heralds the beginning of a new (virtuous) consumerism.
Oh indeed and if it weren’t for BREXIT……
Seriously?
Get a grip
And how many of them have single-use plastic bottles of Coke or River Rock in their rucksacks.
https://www.bbc.com/news/newsbeat-47569233
They’re asking adults to act now. Fair enough. But they can practically play their own part too.
Probably none. They do understand this poo you know.
Your probably right Stan. These pathetic strawman arguments from the lies of eoin are just sad. Also ,well done broadsheet. As always with the censorship! Mary Whitehouse award winner ten years running…
I’d say they feel very good about themselves making these points. A certain cartoon by Matt Bors springs to mind: https://thenib.com/mister-gotcha
George Monbiot has a good quote for this as well:
‘Sure, we are hypocrites. Every one of us, almost by definition. Hypocrisy is the gap between your aspirations and your actions. Greens have high aspirations – they want to live more ethically – and they will always fall short. But the alternative to hypocrisy isn’t moral purity (no one manages that), but cynicism. Give me hypocrisy any day.’
The same people will always talk of the apparent ‘idealogical purity tests’ of ‘the left’ when it suits too
‘A mixture of gullibility and cynicism had been an outstanding characteristic of mob mentality before it became an everyday phenomenon of masses. In an ever-changing, incomprehensible, world the masses had reached the point where they would, at the same time, believe everything and nothing, think that everything is possible and that nothing was true…The totalitarian mass leaders based their propaganda on the correct psychological assumption that, under such conditions, one could make people believe the most fantastic statements one day, and trust that if the next day they were given irrefutable proof of their falsehood, they would take refuge in cynicism; instead of deserting the leaders who had lied to them, they would protest that they had known all along that the statement was a lie and would admire the leaders for their superior tactical cleverness.’
– Hannah Arendt
Plastic waste = climate change now?
yes. do keep up.
Of course he’s one of Hermannnnnn’s Hermits and so called “pro life”. Is that why he hates kids with opinions so much? Get them back to washing by hand under the nuns’ careful supervision. Put manners on the little tykes.
why do you keep trying to platform that robert burke gimp
Extremely wealthy people who own large swathes of valuable land try and pull at peoples heart strings and tie ribbons around trees they couldn’t give a fig about in order to prevent an increase in cycle lanes and buses on our roads = presented uncritically at all times
People protest against idea of leaving our planet turn into a burning husk = It’s a tax grab being pushed by idiot children who just want a day off anyway.
Strange editorial contradiction there
Welcome to the D4 mindset
Leave Ringsend alone.

This mealy-mouthed approach; hiding behind other commentators words and sniping through headlines is beyond tedious as well. If Bodger has a cogent criticism of the movement, he should take the time to write it out.
Bodger rarely has an original thought.
I wonder if he evens believes it. He posts as Chompsky when it suits him.
george, make your point without fibbing. Chompsky is a different person.
George – I can confirm that Bodger never posts as Chompsky and I never post as Bodger.
We are, in fact, two different people.
It’s the evolution of the capitalist systems we live under – rampant consumerism, the urge for perpetual economic growth, vast wealth inequality, etc – that is driving us towards environmental catastrophe. As far as I can see, this movement doesn’t seek to fundamentally challenge these systems and power structures. There’s compelling reason to believe that even though people in general have real concern over the environment, this movement isn’t really grassroots in nature – that it’s been co-opted by powerful elite interests who want to manage and channel public outrage with a view to manufacturing its consent to Green New Deal ‘solutions’.
Instead of solutions that seek to vastly reduce consumption levels of the world’s natural resources, these GND solutions are, as this article says, “growth plans, they all involve extracting more, building more, destroying more of the natural world” and are a “way to keep our capital-demanding growth economy going so that the rich can continue to get richer at the expense of the natural world and the poor”.
http://www.wrongkindofgreen.org/2019/09/19/just-say-no-to-fake-action/
I suppose its important to resist cynicism and inaction but at the same time let’s not be led blindly off a cliff
I would be sympathetic to this point of view – perpetual growth is a significant cause of the problem – but climate breakdown isn’t going to wait until we’ve created the perfect solution, built the right movement, and convinced the nay-sayers to buy into it.
Another ICTU protest. Yawn
School strike me hoop…in my day it was called going on the hop.
When their parents are trumping up more disposable income on carbon tax follies and little precious starts loosing out on their little luxuries then they might cop onto this scam.
The luxury of breathable air? That’s the actual stakes Praetorian in case you haven’t been paying attention . Kids these days are sophisticated enough . More so in fact than your generation whos asperation of owning the next Apple phone is of zero interest to them. Kids have enough gizmos to keep them occupied and they know it. Your generation however couldn’t give a toss about the environment. Answer me this ? How big is your living room TV ?. how much money did you spend on your last phone? You sound like the type of person who watches Top Gear. Read a book sometime!
isn’t he though! Whinging about taxing rich people & faceless corporations. What’s it too him?or 99% of the world? I’ve news for you Burke. The 1% don’t need any more political support.
I wondered who Robert Burke was and why he should be getting any attention for having a go at some kids and I see I already have him blocked on Twitter.
Hahaha
All the squabbling when the issue really is too many people.
Forget carbon tax, introduce a worldwide reproduction tax. Only the rich will reproduce while the poor die off or fight amongst themselves over jobs to serve the rich. Win-win right? Auto-abort for any non-payment. It’s the way to the future! Also, put a maximum age to live, let’s say 90. Then logan’s run the hell outta them. But paper bottles will make a difference too…
While overpopulation is an issue, overconsumption is a far more significant driver of the current crisis. Pointing towards high population countries is an easy excuse;,most of those countries have much lower emissions per-capita.
A billion kids were born in the time it took for you to type that!
Watch as mainstream media are already reporting on the strikes across Europe, US and Australia – ignoring those in Asia and Africa – from those who suffer the brunt of climate change and have less resources to adapt and mitigate.
I’m sure all those that were out to day will walk, cycle even run to School or college next
Monday, ….imagine how his would reduce carbon emissions and traffic congestion
There appears to be a form of mass hysteria in the Irish Body Politic and Media about
Climate is not the real problem over population and indeed over production that has
reached saturation levels
