The Bernard Shaw on Richmond Street South, Dublin 2.; The Porterhouse Whitworth at Cross Guns Bridge, Glasnevin, Drumcondra, Dublin 9
Further to the news that the Bernard Shaw in Dublin 2 is closing…
Marie Clare Digby, in The Irish Times, reports:
Trevor O’Shea’s Bodytonic hospitality and entertainment group has taken over the Porterhouse Whitworth, at Cross Guns Bridge, and when the Bernard Shaw closes at the end of October, as much of its footprint as possible, including the Eatyard food truck space, is transferring to the new venue. Even the name may be re-used.

Yeah but it’s not the same, guys.
There you go – you can dry your eyes, Fart et al.
Loofahs won’t go to the north side
Lamb of Jaysus. I think the owner misses the point by a mile. The Shaw was a few streets away from Shaw’s home, for a starter. This guy has to be a blow in. Interested in money and money only.
It wasn’t always called the bernard shaw you know..
I presume the owners of Bodytonic couldn’t give a toss, so long as it gets the punters in the doors.
True. Business is business. Like the former Bambrick’s patrons felt that the Bernard Shaw was consistent with the character of their neighbourhood or ever went back with a new beard or tattoo to show their cred.
You miss the point. The point of the pub was not the name. The new pub will also have a different name.
The “Brendan Behan”, perchance?
the little tree
The important detail about its catchment area was that it was near Portobello college and DIT Aungier street.
This one’s not too far from TUI
The catchment was Silicon Docks, not students.
Grand opening, grand closing. Location, location, location
Grand opening, grand closing. Location, location, location. But I wish them well. Be good for match days!
won’t work there. too far outta town
I don’t know anyone who drank in that Porterhouse and I would drink in the nearby Gravediggers from time to time. That whole area will see a lot of construction if the metro goes ahead. They’ll be rebuilding Glasnevin train station right next to them.
Across the road
That’s the worst designed pub I’ve ever been in.
Couldn’t the owners of this hipster experience – Bodytonic located the thing on the Northside close to the ‘Joy in the first place? Of course, the D6/D8 tech workers would be afraid to go north of Trinity College Dublin, which may be a factor for locating in a building actually owned by Mr Leeson Street Institute of Education.
The BS was not a local pub. Blow-in, gentrification, central.
Wanna try that in English next horse?
If it’s really a horse I’m impressed already!
Shaw is a mighty headline!
Doesn’t seem to have much outdoor space
Brilliant headline Bodger. That made me laugh.
+1 – The English named a corner in his honour – “Shaw’s Corner”, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shaw%27s_Corner, the Irish named a pub? As an aside – I lived down the road a tad in, Old Welwyn, from Shaw’s Corner, two doors away from Vincent Van Gogh’s sister – there’s a blue placque on the wall by her door – and now it seems a bronze bust of Van Gogh donated to the village by a local sculptor. https://www.hertsmemories.org.uk/content/herts-history/topics/art-and-artists/van-gogh-in-hertfordshire. There’s no sentiment in business, well, clearly not in Dublin.
Profits reported for this hipster joint? 1.4 Million Euro (source: The Phoenix).
