Scott Kannberg aka Spiral Stairs

Any fans of Pavement out there?

Filled to the brim with that Friday feeling, I’ve decided to double down on competitions today and offer TWO tickets to next Thursday’s gig in Whelan’s of Wexford Street, Dublin by Pavement guitarist Scott Kannberg aka Spiral Stairs.

A crucial member of one of the most influential American indie bands of the 1990s, Mr Stairs will be performing material from his new solo album We Wanna Be Hyp-No-Tized as well as older classics.

To be in with a chance of winning the tickets, simply tell me below what your favourite Pavement or Spiral Stairs song is and why.

Lines MUST close at 9.20pm Extended until Midnight.

The winner will be chosen by my next door neighbour’s very opinionated dog.

Nick says: Good luck.

Pavement were great, so many amazing songs, but ‘Here’ off Slanted and Enchanted is a really beautiful song, stripped back and no hiding behind any white noise!

I would have to agree! Apart from the fact it is probably the only one of their songs I could name off-hand, it is a great song.

    2. Otis Blue

      The Pogues version for me.

Alan Gilsenan’s documentary on Liam Clancy, ‘The Yellow Bittern’, is a brilliant watch. He led a fascinating life.

I was at his daughters wedding, held in the house in Ring, let’s just say the sing song was impressive. Willie Clancy turned up, out of hospital, yellow with liver failure and drank whiskey all night long, singing like a mad man.

Was thinking about Box Elder but I’m going to go with Here. Not only for the gloriously downbeat opening lines – ‘I was dressed for success but success it never comes’, but also because it references ‘mavens’ as songs so seldom do.

Also Tindersticks do a great cover version. On which point, I recommend Pavement’s cover of the Bunnymen’s The Killing Moon.

Ta, Otis, I enjoyed the extended guitar opening of, “Killing Moon”, although there’s a lot of guitar hero hero going on there.

    2. Bertie Theodore Alphege Blenkinsop

Tindersticks always sounded like Vic Reeves pub singer to me..
