The votes are in.

Last week, in the ‘eye’ of ‘Hurricane’ Lorenzo and with a stunning 25 voucher to spend at Golden Discs on offer, I asked YOU to name your favourite song mentioning storms or rain or wind.

You answered in your windswept dozens.

133 of you, in fact.

An incredible selection, thank you

Sadly  there could be only one winner.

Third Place:

Judy Garland –You’ll Never Walk Alone.

Slightly Bemused writes:

My mother’s favourite song! I recently heard Judy Garland’s version, and it moved me to tears as that was her favourite version….

Runner up:

The Blue Nile – Tinseltown In The Rain.

Seamus Keane writes:

  A stone cold classic…:

Winner:

Sister Rosetta Tharpe –  Didnt It Rain.

Liam Deliverance writes:

The “Godmother of Rock and Roll” , this wonderful performance comes from an American Folk Blues Tour in England in 1964, this recording comes from Manchester. A five decades long career starting in 1919 inspired many more greats that followed in her footsteps. V

Voice, showmanship and guitar playing, she had it all. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018 as an “early influence”, and what an influence, she inspired Elvis Presley, Little Richard, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and many more that followed in their footsteps. [Today] October 9, is the 46th anniversary of her passing in 1973….

Thanks all.

Well done Liam! A worthy winner! That lady was incredible, and not by her day’s standard. I would love to know what she would do with modern equipment. In many ways, she is credited with ‘inventing’ lead guitar, and was a major influence on Chet Atkins, who in turn went on to influence Mark Knopfler and others.

    Enjoy the vouchers!

“By the time Sister Rosetta Tharpe sang Take My Hand, Precious Lord to a Copenhagen audience in 1970, she was 55 years old and shortly to suffer the stroke that prefaced her death two years later. The funeral of a performer for whom audiences had once packed venues across the US attracted only enough mourners to half-fill a church, and she was buried in an unmarked grave. Yet if you wanted to identify a performer who incarnated the qualities of rock’n’roll before such music had a name, she would top the list of candidates.

Nobody – not Chuck Berry, not Scotty Moore, not James Burton, not Keith Richards – played wilder or more primal rock’n’roll guitar than this woman who gave her life to God and would have celebrated her 100th birthday on 20 March. With a Gibson SG in her hands, Sister Rosetta could raise the dead. And that was before she started to sing.” – https://www.theguardian.com/music/2015/mar/18/sister-rosetta-tharpe-gospel-singer-100th-birthday-tribute (from March 2015)

Thanks all, a very good competition with some great suggestions, these Golden Disc Comps make for great playlists. Thanks Nick and thanks also for posting today, a nice tribute to Sister Rosetta on the anniversary of her passing. What a different world we live in today compared to Sister Rosetta’s time, musicians did what they did for the love it and because they felt it was their calling, these days so many millions are on offer to those that break into the mainstream charts that the ones that do it for the love of it never get to prosper.

Thank You and Rest in Peace Sister Rosetta.

Beams of heaven as I go,
    Through the wilderness below,
Guide my feet in peaceful ways,
    Turn my midnights into days.
When in the darkness I would grope,
Faith always sees a star of hope,
And soon from all life’s grief and danger
    I shall be free someday.

I do not know how long ’twill be,
Nor what the future holds for me,
But this i know: if Jesus leads me,
    I shall get home someday.
