All the leaves are brown.
Never mind.
With Extinction Rebellion eco-warriors rolling through Dublin and the Green wave making a splash at the ballot box, it seems everything’s gone, well, green.
But what about the other colours?
To win this week’s Golden Discs voucher worth a plant-watering €25, simply tell me below what your favourite song is which mentions a specific colour.
Here’s mine.

Purple Rain.
Red – Daniel Merryweather
Red Red Wine by UB40
up until the mid 1960s it was considered gauche and graceless to include a colour in a song title
that all changed with Yellow Submarine (1966), of course
so for that reason, it surely has to be YS
The Beatles, eardrum pollution
Stop that
Immediately
Jesus Janet!
you can’t say that out loud, ffs
I firmly agree. They are good at covers, though.
I knew I wasn’t alone
Spandau Ballet and Gold. Not my personal favourite, but the favourite of a very good friend of mine. I remember at the time buying the CD for her here when I was on a break, and giving it to her when I returned. Where I was working (and where she lived) was at the time a little removed from standard trade and was basically a war zone. Her delight when she took the CD out of the envelope I had creatively wrapped it in (ok, I just put it in a standard manilla envelope) was wonderful.
If I recall correctly it cost me about IR£15, but it was worth every penny to see her smile.

OK, I had to do it! Given colours as the theme, you have to do the rainbow, so I tried to think of the first songs with the various colours in the titles. This is what I came up with, without googling.
Red Red Wine – UB40
Orange Crush – REM
Mellow Yellow – Donovan (not a Beatles fan, so no Yellow Submarine need dock here!)
Green Green Grass of Home – Tom Jones
Blue Velvet – Bernie Wayne
Mood Indigo – Duke Ellington
Violet and Blue – Stevie Nicks
*first songs that came to my head, I mean. Not the first songs to mention a colour, though that would be interesting too!
Ok, Links to each of the songs. May take time to post as multiple links hit the ‘Sheet’s ‘let’s make sure it is safe’ filter. But do enjoy!

hm. all them clever fuppers in the class who seemed to have so much music knowledge & depth…the rest of us just thinking wow what geniuses they were (when in reality they were just regurgitating verbatim what they’d read in the NME) understood the true meaning of the lyrics while the rest of us just well liked the song & were happy at that. It’s just a good song, isn’t that enough?
Bit of pent up frustration there, martco? Relax, it is not a good song, it is a great song! And I realised I forgot the link in my own post. Thank you for reminding me
not a bit of it Bemused, still gigging strong, enjoying all sorts & not a pair of slippers in sight :)
:-)
Still, what a great song! Thank you for reminding me of it

Saw them play it live last March in the Olympia – it was sublime.

Lilac Wine Nina Simone
Has to be Little Green by Joni Mitchell.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jIzJnBWovOs
About the loss felt giving a child up for adoption, it’s autobiographical, brave, beautiful and incredibly sad. Mitchell’s writing on Blue (more colours!) is flawless, but the naming of the child ‘Green’ in this song tells us all we need to know about the narrator and their lost, imagined child:
“Call her green and the winters cannot fade her
Call her green for the children who’ve made her
Little green, be a gypsy dancer.”
Come out ye Black and Tans

the Partridge version was genius :)

Alice Cooper – Poison
“Your mouth, so hot
Your web, I’m caught
Your skin, so wet
Black lace, on sweat”
Nick, I am getting the feeling you are out to get me. With this there is the possibility I may miss another weekend’s work listening to great songs. Have you no shame?!!!

love her and that song is phenomenal
Love you too.
oh.
you said ‘her’
well this is awkward.
No, that’s the sound of my heart calling to yours, B.
I’d swap an eight point lead for one night with you.
Now that is love.
I’d be happy to video the entire event for posterity (and broadsheet)

You can film the night, I fear Sky will have filming the 8 point collapse sewn up.

For Emily Wherever I May Find Her – Simon and Garfunkel
What a dream I had, dressed organdie, cloaked in crinoline of smoky burgundy, softer than the rain…
It’s a long time favourite of mine for deeply personal reasons, but more than that, it’s beautiful.
Such a beautiful song.
And I know an Emily well worthy of it. If anything, the song does not live up to her, either her beauty of body or, most importantly, her beauty of person!
Vincent/Starry Starry Night – Don McLean

my first slow dance was that song, a short fella with red dreads, The Grove, Raheny, so now
You’re an out’n’out heartbreaker, you know.
I wonder is that the night Bosco first discovered he liked a hand up his bum.
now that’s a bellyacher of a comment :)
The Mater – Saint Sister
Fell out of my soft head the night we left The Mater
Bravo maestro, never seen the sky so pink
Fell into your soft bed and stayed the morning after
I said, “Baby, we are colder than we think”
So I made love to the idea of your approval
And the conversations we had with our hands
I don’t go in for that sort of thing, I told you
And I sang, “Stand By Your Man”

Ken Nordine’s “Flesh” is one of many standout tracks on his album “Colors” from 1966. There’s nothing quite like it! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GPrfn8WwLqA&t=1059s
Black is the colour of my true loves hair,
Her lips are like some roses fair
She’s got the sweetest smile and the gentlest hands,
And I love the ground whereon she stands.
Always makes me smile.

Stuff Bob Dylan
Wearing of the Green, of course. And Purple Rain, as long as an orange man who shall be nameless not to give him more publicity is nowhere near, seeing as Prince’s estate refused him permission to use the song, and it’s a song about blood in the sky and the end of the world.

PEOPLE ALSO SEARCH FOR
Life it seems to fade away
Drifting further everyday
Getting lost within myself
Nothing matters no one else
I have lost the will to live
Simply nothing more to give
There is nothing more for me
Need the end to set me free
Things not what they used to be
Missing one inside of me
Deathly loss this can’t be real
Cannot stand this hell I feel
Emptiness is filling me
To the point of agony
Growing darkness taking dawn
I was me but now, he’s gone
No one but me can save myself, but its too late
Now I can’t think, think why I should even try
Yesterday seems as though it never existed
Death greets me warm, now I will just say goodbye
Goodbye

Tommy James & The Shondells’ Crystal Blue Persuasion has been a favourite of mine for a long time – and years before Breaking Bad I might add. ;) Apparently the lyrics are not about being under the influence of crystal meth but are about becoming a Christian. So there you go now

this version of Tom Waits’ All the World is Green is exquisite, with one of my favourite lines of his, probably by Kathleen mind, is ‘he’s balancing a diamond, upon a blade of grass’ and ‘the face forgives the mirror, the worm forgives the plow, the question begs the answer, can you forgive new somehow’.

Damn you Broadsheet..earworms crawling everywhere!
Tangled Up In Blue – Bob Dylan
My favourite Dylan track. I always think about a couple of exes when I hear this song:
“But all the while I was alone
The past was close behind
I seen a lot of women
But she never escaped my mind”
Dylan said that it took him two years to write it but ten years to live it.
It’s a poem about failed love but it also has a gorgeous melody.
