As the days get shorter, one is reminded of the title track of U2’s second album ‘October’, … called, of course, ‘October’.
Which got me thinking: what is your favourite song which is also the name of the album on which it appears?
Tell me below and you will have the chance to win a €25 (count ’em) Golden Discs voucher to warm these late Autumn nights.
Here’s mine.
The winner will be chosen by my pet Rottweiler.
(please include videos where possible)
Lines MUST close 6am Saturday.

It’s brilliant and a wonderful suggestion but Ghosteen surely beats it? Astonishingly complex and beautiful.

you obviously aren’t familiar with the underground track ‘these are the people I’ve never met’ by paul o’dwyer

So many choices. Sgt. Peppers, Joni Mitchell’s Blue, Wilco’s Summer Teeth, Kid A, Ladies & Gentleman…. Purple Rain, In an Aeroplane over the sea. However, there is only one correct answer.
Neil Young’s After The Goldrush. A phenomenal, beautiful and heartbreaking song by a brilliant songwriter at the very top of his game on an album dripping with brilliant songs. Patti Smith’s version is jaw dropping as is Young’s live version.
I am correct about this one. There is no argument. Thom Yorke even thinks so!

For historical and loyalty reasons, I’d nominate Kris Kristofferson’s “Me and Bobby McGee”.
Admittedly the titular song has been done to death over the years, but Kristofferson has retained a certain integrity – both musically and politically through a very long career; though I see himself and Sister Sinead have had a falling-out!
Exodus – Bob Marley & the Wailers
A Walk Across the Rooftops – The Blue Nile
Rival Dealer – Burial
The Greatest – Cat Power
Walking with Thee – Clinic
Microcastle – Deerhunter
Ocean Rain – Echo and the Bunnymen
New Alhambra – Elvis Depressedly
Helplessness Blues – Fleet Foxes
Lust for Life – Iggy POP
Moving up Country – James Yorkston
Queen of Denmark – John Grant

Television “Marquee Moon” – one of the greatest guitar songs ever, containing one of the greatest guitar solos ever.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jlbunmCbTBA
Also bonus points to Television for naming their second album “Adventure” but not including the “title track” on the album (which didn’t appear until the record was re-released years later, and is actually a pretty great song)

Also bonus points to Television for naming their second album “Adventure” but not including the “title track” on the album (which didn’t appear until the record was re-released years later, and is actually a pretty great song). There’s a whole sub-genre of title tracks that didn’t appear on the album of the same name – Led Zep’s “Houses of the Holy” is another one.
For me it has to be Super Trouper by ABBA. For a period of my life when things were not well I would come home, put on the album with this as the first song, put on the headphones, and leave the world behind for 45 minutes. For many years, my dad would only let ABBA or Vicky Leandros records be played on his stereo. And as a self confessed ABBA fan, this suited me down to the ground.
But back to the song: it was the tale of still working through problems even when they seemed overpowering, that really helped me through that time. I still occasionally play it for the same reasons.

All that being said, some great tunes listed above! Except Neil Young. I can never get my head around why people like his nasal twanging. And, having met him, I realised he is a real douche in person.
Because he does what he wants, when he wants, and as he wants. ABBA write incredible pop songs, but young has done Rock, Folk, Electronic, Pop, Grunge before grunge.
They are both 2 of the most influential artists of all time though, and there is a plce for both but to dismiss young so easily is a shame.
Oh trust me, it took a lifetime and meeting him to dismiss him. Nothing easy about it.
But your point that there is room in the world for both is one I actually firmly agree. I do not like Young, but I recognise that others do, and despite my lack of wonder, I do support people in their choices. If only the people I liked were allowed be musicians we would never have new music. And some of that new music I like :-)

Slight update. She told me she still has the Spandau Ballet CD.
She also said White Wedding should be the song for this. She always liked Billy Idol
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AAZQaYKZMTI
Yep, I bought her that CD too.
Yep, she still has that too.
And yep, she reminded me that my favourite song is really, really cheesy!
I am not sure if I love her or want to throttle her (in a kindly way mind. Life would be so much less fun without her!)

Some really brilliant suggestions above and a great question. Very much like choosing your favourite children. Ok, I don’t have children – but if I did – Massive Attack, Protection, there’s another now. Byeeeeee
