Maybe not a single “Army” as such, usual hyperbole from a federalist, but there’s definitely something to be said for a common equipment/defence strategy that all states can get behind.
Why have 27 countries with different equipment etc when we’d be better off all pooling resources and buying together? Would be of use to Ireland considering we still rely on the RAF for air defence…
Can you imagine the difficulties involved in agreeing which countries will win the contract for their own contractors, which contractors will lose out?
Not going to happen
Ignoring of course the whole larger militarisation is bad issue
G, you’re overlooking the context here. Guy V. is referencing having an EU army to replace what the US army are doing. Presuming he’s talking about what’s happening in Syria and Turkey at the moment. So this would mean he’s planning on having EU armies deadling with middle east issues. Which throws open swathes of problems.
Since he’s referring to Syria and Turkey in the context of Trump’s untrustworthiness and unreliability, that’s not necessarily the case, (though it might be.)
All ablebodied Irish citizens should get their blunderbusses out of the attic and donate to a brave new EU army. There might be a few rusting Thompson guns and hand guns buried in Kerry and elsewhere since the end of the civil war in 1923 when small groups of ‘the lads’ were told to ‘dump arms’ and fade away into the general populace. Several of them emigrated to the USA, bringing their irreplaceable paramilitary skills with them.
Fist of all the RAF don’t defend our airspace, they can barely defend their own
As to the EU organising anything, look at Syria and Yugoslavia before that and
the only reason NATO and the Common Market i.e later EU was contrived was
to prevent Germany and France having another Go
If Boris ditches the EU the next move will be to ditch NATO as the Brits have nothing
to gain from it, as the main players in NATO manufacture their own ironmongery
and including Turkey which has a huge weaponry industry
