Getting Googlier

Google offices on Barrow Street, Dublin 4

Ronald Quinlan, in The Irish Times, reports:

Google has entered into talks in relation to the rental of all 202,000sq ft (18,766sq m ) of space at the Sorting Office, the seven-storey office block being developed in the Dublin docklands by Pat Crean’s Marlet Property Group.

Should a deal be agreed, the accommodation at the Sorting Office would provide Google with enough room to grow its existing 8,000-strong Dublin-based workforce by up to 2,000 employees. A spokesperson for Google declined to comment.

The news of Google’s negotiations with the Sorting Office’s Singapore-headquartered owner, Mapletree Investments, comes just three weeks on from The Irish Times reporting of the US tech giant’s agreement to lease more than 75,000sq ft (7,000sq m) of office space in Block I at Green Reit’s Central Park scheme in Sandyford, Dublin 18.

    Sick of the Google Ghetto.

It’s disgraceful one company can literally take over the whole GCD area.

who pay their tax to a foreign state and spend all their hard-earned cash in foreign economies

        2. MaryLou's ArmaLite

They employ foreign nationals because they are struggling to find locals with the skills.

          1. some old queen

Define ‘skills’- Irish workers are denied employment within the agi industry because Paddy won’t do the job in the border region.

            Yeah?

          2. MaryLou's ArmaLite

The skill in demand are Java, AWS, Python, JavaScript, CI/CD, SQL and Automation. If you can do one or more of those you’ll get a job, we don’t have enough people with these skills.

having just been visited countries where Google or any other large multinational will never set up shop I now disagree with you. The employment opportunities offered and development of the area is largely positive

the government are so scared to tax them in case they lose them. but they’re fully in. the size of that whole area they have, theyre not leaving, so tax them the legal required amount of 12.5%. they’ll object because they’re money driven, but hold firm and they’ll pay it. if we had any politicians with the will to provide for irish citizens and with any kind of head on their shoulders they’d do this. instead of handing them half of dublin to do with as they please tax free.

Average pay in google is around 100k, if they have 10k staff (not counting ancillary, support etc) and say the effective tax rate is 40%, that around 400 million in employment taxes alone, not too shabby and definitely not tax free. Not adding in VAT, DIRT and other taxes they pay apart form CT.

Ok so they pay taxes through the PAYE of their staff, that means we can apply a different set of rules to them because . . .? That’s just the same aul cute hoor politics that has us in the state we are in. As far as I remember the 12.5% corp tax rate was relatively generous anyway. Would it have anything to do with the fact that they are a media corporation and therefore keep them on your good side and they will owe you a favour or two when the time comes.

        @Qwerty
10,000 Workforce does not equal 10,000 Staff at any of the multinationals.

70% – 80% of these jobs are outsourced to Accenture and then they employ these people
through Hays/Bertelsmann etc. Most are employed on crappy contracts at Level 13 on €27k pa.
Huge turnover of staff due to sharp practices employed by said outsourcing operations, combined with the high cost of living in Dublin means that the majority of recruitment is from countries in Eastern Europe and outside the EU especially MENA countries.

I have worked for several multinationals, none of whom will let Accenture in the door. The only contractors not earning serious corn are those who are contracted to Indian service providers, but they usually get on Irish contracts pretty quick. Basically everyday is Christmas for IT contractors.

Google, Microsoft, Facebook are but a few of the MNC’s that have outsourced the bulk of their operations to the likes of Accenture(Formerly Arthur Anderson/Anderson Consulting – the people who brought you the Enron scandal and many others).

Accenture have 7 office blocks in Eastpoint alone dedicated to Google/Youtube, Facebook/Whatsapp/Instagram/Pinterest/AIB/Revenue/DEASP and on and on.

They have nearly as many in Sandyford and Leopardstown.
They’ve opened a new office block in Cherrywood recently(300-400 desks)
Then there are their unofficial “secret sites” SS01 to SS10.
What they will be doing in AIB’s former headquarters in Ballsbridge is just a farce to cover up the fact that it is nearly all outsourced jobs that were once in house operations.

          2. MaryLou's ArmaLite

I have always wondered at what work that is done at these HQ sites. No serious development house could realistically run projects staffed with Anderson employees. What work are they doing?

        2. V

There are contractors alright but they are relatively small portion of everyone working in/with Google Ireland.

Also, contractors very explicitly don’t hire people who don’t already have permission to work in Ireland, meaning they basically only hire EU citizens.

      3. stephen c

thats because everyone on less than 40k works for an ancillary company and the stats are skewed by exec’s , theres maybe 1000 people directly employed by google in those offices , a lot of developers on 50-60 , sales people making about the same , and 100 or so people making 250k+

they outsource everything , secretaries, furniture movers, all maintenance, cleaning, food staff, telesales, support, etc… and most if not all of those people make <35k.

        1. Cian

A salary of €53K pays €14,700 in tax x 7,000 employees = €102 million in personal income taxes per year.

          1. italia'90

That’s assuming 7,000 are directly employed Google staff.
Which we all know, well those of us in the industry that don’t rely on Irish Times puff pieces, advertorial content and government spin know, less than 40% of these employees are directly employed by the MNC.
In some cases that I know about, especially the newer and smaller social media companies, it’s less than 10% staff and 90% outsourced.

Have a quick look on indeed there, the jobs are advertised for the worlds biggest social media company but fails to mention that you will hired by accenture and paid by Hays or CPL.
If you don’t believe me, apply for one or just call the agencies.

      1. GiggidyGoo

But that’s just it. They come here and employ people, but a lot of those people come here too, hence the accommodation crisis. And, apart from the odd few, the pay isnt that good once you take out the cost of accommodation.
I think we also have had enough of classy jobs such as call centres, claims centres etc.
