I think if used inventively they can be fun. I remember seeing an article about a guy in London who made a wizard costume, with a crystal on his wand. But he took the NFID chip out of his Oyster card and put it just below the crystal. When he wanted the tube gates to open, he just tapped the crystal against the sensor.
What makes it funny is he told the interviewer that he was often asked what type of crystal he used to make it. I keep having the image of people going around with various crystals tapping them against the tube and bus sensors, and wondering why they don’t work :)

Have some of these from visiting places and fossicking trips. Never knew they were supposed to have magic powers! They’re just nice to collect as examples of earth’s diverse rocks and gems created by extreme forces. Knew a gemologist once – fascinating stuff.
