Meanwhile, In Ballinamore

at

This afternoon.

Ballinamore, County Leitrim.

A “continuous and peaceful demonstration” outside an apartment complex in Ballinamore where it is apparently planned to accommodate 130 asylum seekers under the Direct Provision system.

Organisers say the protest will continue until the Government “listened to the people” on the issues surrounding such centres.

Because the previous protests were supposedly about direct provision in a hotel and the argument was that they should be housed in the community. The asylum seekers in Ballinamore will be housed in the community and the protesters are agin that too.

What else could it be other than not wanting people of colour living in the neighbourhood?

So you are making assumptions. Maybe they feel the new cultures will clash with Irish traditions, there could be a whole variety of reasons, but with absolutely nobody mentioning skin colour I would guess that has no bearing on it whatsoever. What is needed is talking, understanding, before simply playing the racist card which will do nothing when trying to find agreement.

No fupps given by ANY of these “community” groups about direct provision until it appears less likely that their own spawn can get a free home in their locality and that brown skinned non-catholics might move into their villages.

Oh please- black, white or green with orange spots- the result would be the same.

Stick a group of young men with no or little language skills from a different culture with no money and nothing to do into a small rural Irish community and there is going to be serious problems from day one.

But no- its racist- do you even know where these men are from? If you do then good for you because the locals don’t- all they know is that they are un-vetted and alien. Foreign to most rural people is Dublin ffs- especially southside.

The owner of the apartment block is now asking for families which although not suitable to the accommodation type because he was too greedy to build houses in the first place- is progress.

Absolutely bang on the mark, Irish people are amongst the least racist I’ve met, but they’re not dumb enough to think that everything will be grand if you plant an entirely different community right in the middle of another, that’s not how you integrate people. It’s more about the way this is being done, and not the people.

This is brilliant, exactly the way to go about it. Puts the “end Direct Provision” brigade in a corner, faced with a brutal yes or no; are you against DP? Other communities need to follow this need. An election is on the horizon and this will be huge in the secrecy of the ballot box.

Whether it be one week or ten years is irrelevant.

Common sense should tell you that youu cannot transplant a disproportionately large group of people into a small community like that- and not expect some sort of blow back.
