Members of the LGBT+ community and their supporters will gather outside Leinster House to call for hate crime legislation.
Oisin Kenny, in Gay Community News, reports:

Surely attacking somebody is a crime already? Why the need for extra laws?
The augment is that if a hate crime occurs then the other members of the gay community living in the vicinity can feel in danger themselves so it causes come social stress and paranoia. If a gay couple get bashed (and its understood that being gay was the primary catalyst for the attack), then its a hate crime additional to the regular attack. Hate crime laws don’t negatively affect law abiding people. So (frankie says) relax.

I think hate crime legislation to address race issues is likely to happen and sexuality will be included too.

The 1989 Prohibition of Incitement to Hatred Act does make inciting hatred on account of race, religion, nationality, ethnic background membership in the Traveller community or sexual orientation an offense. However, it is generally only applicable to hate speech, with only five convictions under that legislation in the past 30 years, according to the Immigrant Council of Ireland.

Personally I am a little perplexed as to what is being called for- you beat someone up for being gay/black etc- that is already a hate crime- IMO it’s just that Gardaí couldn’t be arsed implementing the existing law.
I get uncomfortable once you get into the area of ‘hate speech’ because it can be used as a state censorship tool. I understand that words result in actions but, it is a very dangerous road to travel. Look what happened when SF could not speak in their own voice- the message was amplified tenfold.
Be careful of Streisand- we are all big kids inside- we will do the exact opposite of the scolding.
