Proposed National Children’s Hospital

No, seriously.

RTÉ reports:

The head of the board responsible for the new national children’s hospital says it cannot be certain of the final price of the project.

The project has been highly controversial, this week the Labour party claimed the project would now exceed €2bn.

A letter from David Gunning, the chief officer of the National Paediatric Hospital Development Board, read out at the Public Accounts Committee today said: “There have been a number of exceptions that have been outside the approved budget for which there cannot be price certainty at this point or for the duration of the project.”

I’d say if we put a tax on public servants’ pay proportional to how much this thing overruns that price would start to drop precipitously

Would I be right in thinking that most of the money will be spent on consultant’s fees rather than the actual build? (Sorry haven’t got time to go digging, busy busy)

Time to call a halt. Throwing good money after bad. Sell the site off to developers (at a market rate)

So the basics are there to build, say, apartments. Half built you say? Worth even more than a site.
Cheaper than a blank chequers don’t you think?

Nonsense calls to scrap the project when (a) there’s hundreds of millions already spent on the project (b) there’s a huge amount of work completed and (c) a new national children’s hospital is needed anyway, why start from scratch elsewhere in the hope this farce won’t happen again. It’s the Irish Government, of course they’ll hand out contracts without looking for or getting a hard guarantee of the final costs. I’m sure there’s quid pro quo happening somewhere in the deal. Imagine if all work was done that way, yes sure I’ll paint your house but I won’t know the bill until I finished. Of course I’ll bake your wedding cake, it’ll cost somewhere between €200 and €2,000,000….maybe.
