The funeral of Gay Byrne takes place.

Via RTÉ:

Gay Byrne lived in Howth for many years and the funeral cortège will pass through the village at approximately 11am, allowing locals to pay their respects.

The cortège will proceed to Sutton Cross and then down the coast road onto Clontarf Road.

It will then travel into the city centre via the North Strand, the Matt Talbot Memorial Bridge and onto O’Connell Street.

Access to the Pro Cathedral will be extremely limited, with seating reserved for family and friends. Those attending the mass are asked to be in place by 11.15am.

After the mass, the cortège is expected to leave the cathedral sometime between 1pm and 1.30pm.

It will return back towards Cathal Brugha Street and O’Connell Street.

At the quays, the cortège will turn left onto Eden Quay, heading up the North Quays towards Amiens Street and onto the North Strand Road.

It will then return along the same coast road via the Clontarf Road to St Fintan’s Cemetery.

More as we get it.

They’re be people throwing themselves in front of the cortege. Very sad day for Ireland, don’t know how we’ll be able to survive without him.

The scale of what? It’s a funeral. He was well liked and well known. Some people will turn out at the church and a few will stand at the end of their roads to watch and see it go by.

It’s on telly mainly because he was well known off the telly.

          Not much more than that.

          RIP Gaybo

ah not really, parents generations world was a lot smaller, plus at that age they love funerals, a good turn out etc

The phrase “it’s the end of an era” is over-used but appropriate to this case.

It is a shame that Gay did not embrace the online world in the last stage of his career, I think if he had he would have enjoyed it very much.

The internet is a fantastic resource for the elderly, encouraging the current generation of over 70s to become computer literate and internet-savvy would transform the quality of their lives and indeed younger persons’ lives as we would have the benefit of their experience and a different point of view. I wonder if anyone commenting on here is over 70? I hope so.

Less justification for younger folk in RTE’s disdain of the internet, and in fairness Gaybo never expressed disdain, he just didn’t engage as he could possibly have done.

Meh, the internet doesn’t need Gaybo to flourish and Gaybo certainly didn’t need the internet to live a rich and fulfilling life to the end.

I agree, Tubridy’s disdain for the internet is so boring at this stage. We get it Ryan, you don’t like smart phones or Twitter. Grand.

Rialto? Excuse me Soldier F – the South Circular if you don’t mind. Those property prices need to be kept upi.

Well it is SCR really, to give his old gaff its proper address, xxx South Circular Road, Dublin 8

being able to spit on the Rialto roundybout from his old front door is just a location marker really

      2. some old queen

Rialto is gay- SCR is Muslim- Rialto is defiantly the preferential pitch of estate agents.

Ah jazus V they can’t be hawking the poor fella all over the place. Sure they might as well take in Donegal while they’re at it. Kathleen is looking well.

Wonder if Gaybo’s love child was at the funeral. Wonder if he’ll be presented to the public now the father’s dead.

    1. Rob_G

I think your mam may have been telling you fibs all these years about the identity of your mystery father, Sean…

Fair dues. He made a contribution through entertainment.

Deserves a good send off from many. The Irish are only too delira when someone famous is expira… etc., etc., but this is a special day to say goodbye and thanks…

Pic 3 “Mary Byrne, (above left) sister of Gay”. That’s actually Gay’s daughter, Crona.

Imagine Gay going through the RTE interview process now- The HR militia insisting on full on Competency bullpoo because they have the nod and the wink beforehand.

So- tell me about a time when you had no credit card while walking around Dundrum shopping centre?
