Emma O’Kelly reports on RTÉ:
Overall €40 million has been spent by the State so far on remediation works in dozens of schools [built by Co Tyrone-based company Western Building Systems] where fire safety breaches and structural defects were discovered, RTÉ News has learned.
The figure is expected to be contained in an update that the Minister for Education Joe McHugh is expected to give to the Cabinet at its weekly meeting later this morning.
…However, the €40m bill will rise over this year and next. Work on structural repairs to eight more schools is due to begin in the New Year. Plans are being drawn up for repairs to a further 17 schools, where work is expected to begin next summer.
Meanwhile…
Eamon Melia tweetz:
The Govt have spent €40 million on repairs to new schools built by Western Building systems yet still awarding state contracts to that company. Something not right here.
Anyone?

Brown envelope rules ok.
“Yes, as through this world I’ve wandered I’ve seen lots of funny men;
Some will rob you with a six-gun,
And some with a fountain pen.”
why isn’t the company being sued or being forced to fix it if they cocked it up, redress ?
because some idiots signed off on the buildings
they should be in the bin along with the ministers involved
country is a joke
because that is not how it works here I’m afraid Janet
You can bet that WBS didn’t bulid any of these schools
They employed a subbie to do it
ABM Group here in Swords wouid be the usual suspects from my experience
You might need to know their poitical links to the FFG&SF kleptocrats in local and national government
Ask Dan Boyie how it works and if he says he doesn’t know, he’s being economicai with the truth
Cork CC is the most blatant for this corruption – nobody beats a CES tender down there!
I’ve tried many times
WBS has a very interesting silent partner that I’m aware of
I’ve worked on site where they were the contractors here in Dublin and elsewhere
one of ABM’s directors is Cobbetts Limited of Manchester, well known in the Isle of Man, Bahamas and Panama
of course a real journalist in Ireland would have investigated these guys already, but then again we don’t have any good journalists in Ireland, just disinformation via opinionated corporate propagandists!
thanks that’s really interesting,
this place is really corrupt
Such a coincedence on Broadsheet today
The nephew of the silent partner I know about in WBS is pictured in KK in a later post ;)
Ya couldn’t make this up ffs
irish building at it’s finest, who can feel safe buying a property built over the last 15 years
Agreed, we still have the same self certification like the last boom. Our nearest neighbours, the council inspect building work at various stages.
I wonder why we pay the LPT and what the councils do at this stage.
Follow the Money….
The reason they still get contracts awarded to them by Government is the daw jawed Irish electorate continue to support the political filth by re electing them. There are zero consequences. Why would they stop?
It’s the apparently mindless “just-in-time/lean/agile” project business model that is causing the problems, 1. Let a situation become a national crisis 2. Announce a rushed, half-assed plan 3. Pay contractors an inflated fee to implement the half-assed fast-tracked plan 4. result: Crisis-driven design and construct schedule with inevitable over-runs, unsafe sub-standard rushed construction work, voila. Half-Assed, Short-Term, Magic-thinking, Max-profiting chaos, who does that benefit?
