The “Irish” Mail on Sunday should rename itself to The “English” Mail on Sunday!! They seem to have given up completely on supporting Irish contributors i.e. can they not find an Irish gardener except a British one – Monty Don? So they have a 7 page special on this, and this is just a copy of the British Mail on Sunday! Clearly they’re putting as little resources into Ireland but trying to get as much money out of it. Irish people have copped on the last 3 years or so, they sold 51,000 in October compared to about 120,000 about 3 years ago.. That makes their decision to keep using British copy for their Irish paper the more baffling. Can they not see that sales have collapsed? It is a very strange marketing strategy.
Looks like they’re heading in the same place as the ill-judged The Times Ireland edition. And I can’t say I’m sorry, they’re shameful actions when the Sunday Tribune failed was a new low in Irish journalism i.e. having a front page design that looked like the Tribune’s. Absolutely gutter stuff, whoever was editor obviously has very low standards. Wonder how they would feel if they closed and the Sunday Independent done a similar action to what they did? They are selling less now than the Tribune was when it closed, so they better watch out!

The Irish edition of the ST has become less Irish and more generic. I think there are about five of them left in the Dublin office which is a shame. Once they keep Mark Tighe and keep the Delaney/fai dirt coming I’ll be satisfied

I think the daily mail has given up in Ireland. The IMOS is so inferior to a few years back and they keep upping the price. I have no interest in buying it.

Sacha Baron Cohen denounces Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Google as ‘the greatest propaganda machine in history’ and culpable for a surge in ‘murderous attacks on religious and ethnic minorities’… ‘if you pay them, the platform will run any “political” ad you want, even if it’s a lie’… “if Facebook were around in the 1930s, it would have allowed Hitler to post 30-second ads on his “solution” to the “Jewish problem.””

So are we going to have read this goading rubbish for the next three weeks? Can we not have a grown up conversation about the subject?

1.3 million new voter registrations since the last election and last Friday was the biggest single day of registrations in UK history- near all young people. But, unlike Ireland, as evidenced by an NHS and substantial social housing, Britain has a history of left wing governments and is reeling from a decade of austerity. The polls got it badly wrong last time around and there is way more unknown variables now- so it is all to play for.

        1. Cú Chulainn

Everyone knows that the polls are completely fixed. They are set to influence the electorate. They haven’t quite adjusted to accommodate social media just yet.. but they will.

          1. bisted

…I don’t agree that all polls are fixed but they do influence the electorate…the UK Brexit polls unanimously showed an overwhelming remain vote…were they all wrong or fixed?…they did persuade a lot of remain voters not to bother voting…cue whingers and whiners aka remoaners…

          2. some old queen

And that is it- more and more, people are regarding polls as propaganda- which is a good thing. As for social media platforms- see my Sacha Baron Cohen link above- they are no innocents either, if anything- worse.

        2. martco

she’s about as exciting or interesting as vanilla ice cream unfortunately, did you catch her main effort at a pp broadcast recently? dirge.
I think double unfortunately the Brit’s place a lot of faith in their “leaders” & revere blue blood be it German or English in origin hence I reckon they’ll lick Boris’ boots just like they adore their Saxe-Coburgs & likes of Rees-1837’s. They can’t get away from their past subservience to their landowners.

I think it’s just stalemate again, maybe next generation, wha

  2. GiggidyGoo

So, security wasn’t high on the agenda regarding the 16 ‘migrants’.
And there are the various politicians ranting about upping security here, there, and everywhere while Commissioner Harris’s Boys ‘n Blue couldn’t be arsed keeping an eye on illegal immigrants.
    Clap clap.

    1. some old queen

But that is the whole point isn’t it? Nobody is ever vetted and after a long and drawn out appeals process, if rejected they are just politely asked to leave. I think perhaps the view held on high is that for most, the final destination is the UK and that it is just cheaper to let them move on than deport.

      1. GiggidyGoo

True. I don’t think that there should be an issue with the the few that are vetted and deemed legal to be here. The ones that, after two or three appeals, are still appealing, should be re-patriated, especially to countries where the war etc. issues are no longer a reason for their not being there.

      1. GiggidyGoo

Now where did I say that Cian? Maybe that’s what you or you, you, your Verona might want. Ask FG HQ their thoughts. Try to get in line with the ‘right’ story now lads.
Maybe take a closer look at the Law and Order Party’s record. A very recent one being their belated (many years) ‘dealing’ with the attacks on the directors of Quinn. Not very law and security minded are the little FGers. More like Photo ops and Photoshops. Takes them almost a decade to make some arrests, and releases.

        1. Cian

“So, security wasn’t high on the agenda regarding the 16 ‘migrants’.” implies that you think that the 16 asylum seekers should have been locked up.

I may be wrong. What did you mean by that statement?

          1. GiggidyGoo

It must be awful to be that much if a gobpoo eh Cian.
Do you not think that 16 illegals, nationaliy of which is doubtful, should be allowed free rein to do what they like upon arrival.? Without even been interviewed by the Gardai?
(By the way, the Gardai aren’t prison officers- so where exactly did you extract ‘prison’ from my post.?)
Apologists will be apologists eh Cian?

          2. GiggidyGoo

I’d have had them interviewed immediately upon arrival at the DP in order to ascertain their nationalities, and whether they were asylum seekers or not, and whether they were a threat to this nation – which would form an opinion on whether they needed to be put under observation.
Over to you Cian – what would you have done?

          3. some old queen

It is kind of strange that you never hear anyone criticise Australia’s immigration policy which is brutal in comparison. Interviews are done at the airport and those rejected are sent back on the spot. And yet, it is the number one destination for emigrating Irish people- if you have the professional skills they need then step right in. I know a number of people living there now and not one of them has used the word ‘racist’ about the Australian immigration policy because it is not- race is irrelevant.

One point nobody has mentioned is that assuming travel restrictions post Brexit- this situation is going to get much worse. No one knows how many are trafficked through Ireland at present but if the Border goes up, Ireland will then become the final destination.

          4. Cian

“I’d have had them interviewed immediately upon arrival at the DP in order to ascertain their nationalities, and whether they were asylum seekers or not, and whether they were a threat to this nation – which would form an opinion on whether they needed to be put under observation.”

And you have independently formed an opinion that they needed to be put ‘under observation’? Or why did you say “So, security wasn’t high on the agenda regarding the 16 ‘migrants’.”

          5. GiggidyGoo

Well , Cian I’ve answered your question. I see you haven’t answered mine.
I can wait. Once Leokins issues you with what to write, let me know.

          6. Rob_G

@SOQ – Australia detains asylum seekers in a third country, beyond the reach of the of the Australian courts, Guantanamo Bay-style – their immigration policy has generated oceans of ink-worth of criticism.

          7. some old queen

@Rob_G my point is that most are turned away at point of entry and even with a system so extreme, the slurs of racism are nowhere like here?

Most people understand the need for some sort of vetting or screening but in Ireland we have this aggressive hard left who spend their time calling anyone who dares question this unsustainable system a racist- and people are sick of it.

    https://www.breakingnews.ie/ireland/thousands-rally-and-call-to-save-respite-centre-in-co-roscommon-966185.html
Cuisle respite centre. For the sake of €1.5m, a place that gives respite to wheelchair users, is in the sights of someone is all I can think of. Google it and see what a fantastic place it is.
Licensed hotel-like premises with gym, jacuzzis, river access for boating.
It gives much needed respite. The only one of its kind in the Republic of Ireland as far as I know.
Something very, very fishy going on.

      1. Bud Flanagan

The trouble is it’s not just a FG governmnent but a government of national unity so there’s no effective opposition in Ireland to speak up for the oppressed.
Ming is off getting monged in Brussels, the Shinners are still taking orders from the IRA Army Council with Big Mary Lou a busted flush and Labour still hasn’t recovered from the years under that eejit Pat Rabitte who has now transferred his ineptitude towards destroying Tusla’s reputation.
The chances of Mehole the Muppet taking office are about as likely as Corbyn being put in charge of the USA’s nuclear arsenal.
And the same supine Irish media that allowed the banking crisis to happen under its watch are still doing sweet Fanny Adams to hold this government to account.
It almost makes me yearn for the days of the irascible Vincent Browne.

      2. GiggidyGoo

Ive said it before here – FG are the ‘kick ‘em when they’re down Party’. And it’s usually the ones that have medical conditions that suffer. Mickey Noonan was a dab hand at it, lest we forget.

  4. f_lawless

Here’s a surprise: Peter Hitchens, via his slot in the MoS, is allowed report on the currently unfolding furore surrounding the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons and its report on the alleged chemical weapons attack in Syria in 2018. All other corporate media outlets seem to be avoiding the story.

“The revelation appears to be the worst instance of ‘sexing-up’ in support of war since the invasion of Iraq and Tony Blair’s doctored dossiers”.

So they bombed and invaded another oiI/mineraI rich country in the MiddIe-East in contravention to the Geneva Convention on the basis of another dodgy sexed up dossier?

HopefuIIy Hitchens wiII report the truth about the SkripaIs soon, but we’II probabIy have to wait untiI a Iabour government before that is pubIished in the UK’s msm

Imagine if NigeI and a few of the other neocon/chickenhawks on here were to do a Mea CuIpa?
      Now that wouId be GAS!

      1. f_lawless

Well this time the sexing up of the dossier happened after the fact in an attempt retroactively justify the bombing by the US, UK and France. All they really had to go on at the time the strikes were made were dodgy, unverified videos and photos appearing on social media – or, as Theresa May preferred to phrase it, “open-source material”.

        1. italia'90

          Yes, you are correct
I framed that comment ass backwards
The US/UK/FR knew exactIy who committed that atrocity and the other gas attacks
          And they were compIicit
They buiIt up, funded and armed ISIS
GCHQ was/is running The White HeImets, who are a front for ISIS and a faux civiI defence operating in ISIS stronghoIds throughout Syria in conjunction with the CIA objectives etc
          IdIib is a perfect exampIe

These highIy orchastrated attacks aIong with the fake Russian narrative incIuding the SkripaI affair are aII part and parceI of the War Mongering/Corporatist/MSM/TPTB attempts to manufacture consent among the disinformed to wage war and destabiise mineraI rich regions of the worId such as the MiddIe East, South America and Africa

The coup in BoIivia is hardIy getting a Iook in strangeIy enough?
VenezueIa, ChiIe, Colombia, Nicaragua are aII in economic turmoil and have had or are about to have their elected governments overthrown as a consequence of CIA’s continuation Operation Condor from the 70’s

Operation Timber Sycamore was authorized by Obomber at the behest of Foreign Secretary CIinton for anyone who wishes to research the truth about why we are where we are today – it effects us aII whether we reaIise it or not

    1. some old queen

Of course, that is it- homeless people are not homeless because there is nowhere for them to live- it is because it is their own fault- how could I have missed that all along?

      1. Steph Pinker

SOQ, it’s easy to tell when there is a GE looming – the FG bots and shills have invited their friends to comment on BS under new/ multiple usernames and propagate more propaganda – don’t take the bait, and don’t waste your youth trying to rationalise it; just use your vote in the next GE.

        1. Daisy Chainsaw

Fraperoom operating on a Sunday? Poor little babyblueshoights don’t even get time off to go to mass anymore.

          1. GiggidyGoo

Yep, the overtime is always good coming up to elections. Even Cian posting on a Sunday. The figures must be bad.

        2. some old queen

@ Steph Pinker- problem is- this is a British election coming up- not an Irish one.

Although, the NI invert of Irish= Labour and British= Tory is interesting.

Sunday Times – OPW made failed bid for RTE art

“. . . one arm of the state buying art from another arm of the state via a London auction room with vat, 25% commission . . .”

This art buying culture by government departments should be looked at.

        1. GiggidyGoo

They had a problem – how to finance the first part of The Tubridy Toy Tribulation show. It didn’t happen for them.

          1. Steph Pinker

… or, to steal from John Sullivan; a big huge sign in neon lights saying TIT: Tubridy Independent Traders.

      1. Cian

If they sold it (passed it between themselves) then there’d be no 25% Sotheby’s fee payable but they would have paid RTE’s inflated asking price.

        1. GiggidyGoo

Both are government financed. No losses either way.
Apologists will nevertheless be apologists Cian.
The overtime must be good at the weekend

  6. GiggidyGoo

So, 7pm, Sunday, and where’s the big rush now to give many minutes of newstime to the disappearance of (11?), and where is Mr Boy Taoiseach and his pronouncements on how welcoming we are?
Fact is that this provided an opportunity for FG to virtue signal in a big way. In an area where the availability ambulances, consultants and other medical professionals is at a minimum, we suddenly had the resources to produce a convoy – at the whim of the state – to provide medical assistance to the arrivals (even though the ferry company reported them to all be well). Another notch for Varadkar.
The fact is that these healthy males got on the wrong ferry, found themselves in Ireland and absconded toute suite. And no-one bothered to keep an eye on them.
Virtue signal done – next please!
And up it blows in FGs face.
Take care of our own unfortunates!

    1. Cian

“And no-one bothered to keep an eye on them.”
What would you suggest? more resources thrown at them? Perhaps the army could watch them? A Garda team shadowing them? Lock them in Mountjoy?

        1. GiggidyGoo

No answer then Cian? Awaiting Boy Varadkar to issue
instructions? You’re very good at insisting on having your own questions answered- not so hot on answering up yourself.
          Apologists be apologists

          1. Rob_G

Geez, would you relax? We like to give the chaffeurs a bit of a lie-in, so we normally only roll into the frape-room around 10 bells, fire up the Gaggia, and so only settle into our €2k, taxpayer-funded orthopedic chairs at about 10:30 or thereabouts.

        2. Cian

          Me? I’m not suggesting anything.
*I* didn’t criticise what happened. I don’t have an opinion on what happened.

I do have a problem that you think that they should have been locked up someone should have “kept an eye on them” and that “security wasn’t high [enough] on the agenda”

          1. GiggidyGoo

Well you e criticized my post for suggesting that newly- arrived individuals of unknown nationality should be interviewed by an Garda Siochana.
What procedures do you think should give been put Iin place to establish their identities, nationalities, intentions?
I’ve kept the question relatively simple for you. Or do you need to ask Proper Charlie Flanagan what the correct procedures are, and what are the arrangements as regards comings and goings once guests are installed at a DP Centre.

          2. Cian

“Well you e criticized my post for suggesting that newly- arrived individuals of unknown nationality should be interviewed by an Garda Siochana.”

You are making stuff up. You never mentioned “interviewed by an Garda Siochana”. What you wrote is literally at the top of this page.

          3. italia'90

            C’mere to me GiggidKlu

            let’s sing it together;

“Build that wall, Build that wall, Build that wall”

          4. GiggidyGoo

Aren’t you the clever fella Italia? Of course if you trawl to any of my comments you’ll find that you’re way off the mark. Looks like you need to have a chat with Verona or maybe Cian can fill you in when LeoLad decides on the text of his response. Until then, maybe you can answer the same question as put to Cian. Cian – the FG Apologist who hasn’t received his directions yet on what opinion to have.
Shameful pair of boyos aren’t you?

      1. GiggidyGoo

Keep running Cian. If you scroll up I answered your question saying I’d have them interviewed. The arm of the state that does that is An Garda Siochana.
I.note that you’re trying to avoid answering my question you. I did you the courtesy of answering yours.
Has Leokins still not had anything back from his handlers?
So c’mon Cian – answer my question which was
What procedures do you think should give been put in place to establish their identities, nationalities, intentions?

        1. Cian

          I already answered your question.
I don’t have an opinion on what procedures are appropriate, I’m not an expert in asylum. *I* haven’t criticised what happened.

          1. GiggidyGoo

Funny that you can have an opinion on posts and insist on answers to your questions (the answer of course struck you dumb) but run away when you’re asked.
            So, 4th time of asking.
What procedures do you think should give been put in place to establish their identities, nationalities, intentions?

I’ll ask another one – Do you accept how this was handled?

            Pick one or both.

            I can wait.

          2. Cian

If you (not specifically GG) doesn’t agree with a process/procedure then I don’t think it unreasonable to ask how/why you would change it. By stating an opposition it suggests that you have sufficient knowledge to make a judgement on it. By thinking about the changes you may realise that the current process is the least bad option. If I criticise something I am willing to justify why, and to propose changes.

I’ll tell you a third time, I don’t know enough about the asylum process to answer your question. In general terms I would ensure that the people initially get food and medical attention. Then I would try to find out what language they speak – because it may take time to arrange a translator.

“Do you accept how this was handled?” again, I don’t have the full facts to hand. I’d like to know what percentage of asylum seekers run away on the first night. If this is a high number then we need to look at how we manage peoples first few night (i.e. look at “securing” them – lock them in). If it is very low percentage, then the process is okay.

          3. GiggidyGoo

Are you related to Manuel from Fawlty Towers? You are quick enough to research links to back up other posts you make yet you use the ‘I know nothing’ tactic to avoid being called out.
So educate yourself perhaps – links are available- and then perhaps you’ll grace us with an educated opinion.
Or wait for the Lad Leo’s instructions. They’re slow in coming today mind you.
            Apologists will be apologists

          4. Rob_G

            You’re deranged

“Well, what do you think about this?!”
“Tbh I don’t really know enough about it to give an informed opinion”
“Well I command you to go and read up about it so that I can shout at you about it some more”

          5. Cian

            GiggidyGoo
Why all the aggression toward me? Why the name-calling? Why won’t you stick to the subject under debate? Why the nastiness?

          6. GiggidyGoo

Cian – simple answer is that I consider you an apologist for FG. The more you write, the more concrete my opinion.
Playing dumb when you can easily read up on something is a convenient method of bypassing discussion. GIYF as you know.

          7. GiggidyGoo

            V?

If i’m asked a question I give a straight answer. If I ask a question here though, I get wriggling, waffling etc. I have little time for wafflers and wrigglers. Especially ones who purport to be well versed in matters political, and can quote all sorts of legalities, but take the quick exit when pushed.
The underlying subject of the discussion (if you would call it that) is the failure of the State to properly deal with the situation here. We now have 13 people, nationality and beliefs and backgrounds unknown transported from Rosslare to a DP Centre by the State, and left to their own devices, again by the State.
Am I only one who sees something wrong with that?
As a matter of interest, would they be considered criminals because they entered the country in the manner they did?

I promise you that the next time we meet in what used to be Lillie’s Bordello gigs- i wont be carry a large knife.

In fairness, when they read that “Staying In This Saturday?” stuff about the Ray D’Arcy Show on RTÉ, they headed back to Rosslare Harbour.

The bit you don’t read about is how several hundred Wexford locals begged to be taken with them.

On this Sunday evening- we should worship- dear Correct Speak God- we pray for –

    – Those with cultural rather than religious reasons to swish around with their face covered.

    – Those sentential beings being hung while having their throats cut.

    – Those Srt8 boys on the Luas who feel gays have no right to object to Islam.

    Amen.

  8. italia'90

    GiggidyKlu,

I’ll try answer your question, the original one, but you have conflated many issues into one and there seems to be a little confusion or misunderstanding about the differences between asylum seekers and migrants?

You started off defining them as migrants – now I don’t know if they are or are not but my money is on them being Kurdish and more likely to be asylum seekers who ended up in Ireland unexpectedly – hence a few have absconded and are preumably trying to get in to next door? I could be very wrong of course, but in the overall scheme of things, it doesn’t really matter what or who they are, fair play to them to get this far and I don’t care what your opinion is of my answer

There is also a lot of info we don’t know, there is so much context missing from issues arising from this incident and because of poitical cowardice by the main parties we don’t have a decent humane policy for economic migrants or asylum seekers, it should already exist and be practiced regardless of who is in government

    My response to last weeks arrival of 16 aslyum seekers/migrants who ended up in Rosslare instead of an english port woud be to;
    A) Make sure they were healthy and not showing signs of stress or duress
    B) Feed them food and give them plenty of liquids – I’d even Irish up their coffee for them if they requested it
    C) Give them access to showers and grooming products
    D) offer them clean clothes to change into if they were in need of them
    E) Try to estabish where they were coming from and where they were going to
    F) Put them on the train from Rosslare to Connolly Station
    G) Give them directions to the unofficial international bus stop on Sean McDermott St and give them the money to get the bus into the UK via Belfast/larne which Bulgarians/Albanians and Romainians have been using for years The buses arrive and leave every Wednesday/Thursday and Sunday

If they decide they want to stay, then let them and start the process asap
We’re going to need 25k-50k immigrants per year before this century is out

    1. GiggidyGoo

I got to E and thought ‘Gee, Italia 90 speaks a lot of sense”
After that you made a hames of what was beginning to look like a sensible post.
And if it was intended to put a counter argument to mine, then think…..
E didn’t happen by the way, which was a crucial point I made – so nice of you to agree. Because it didn’t happen, my post included (as yours did) the word ‘abscond’. So you’ve agreed again with me.

I think you should take V’s advise yourself.
