Dublin’s punky tykes Fontaines D.C. cluttering up the end of year best album lists with their debut long player Dogrel.

A musical wet paper hat. File under ‘Dublin working class cosplay’.
Oasis b-sides sung by Damien from Fair City.
They well and truly pulled the wool over the brits eyes. “Working class Dublin poet” and “gritty working class sounds”
Worst album I’ve heard in a long time.
Ah give over
An Irish band is making a go of it
And are doing well for themselves
Fair play to them and I wish them well
+1
I hear you are a nationalist now Fr. Vanessa?
When have I ever not supported Irish anything or any code?
Or maybe you’d prefer to continue to invent stuff about me
Each listen to ‘Dublin City Sky’ triggers a bout of humming ‘Sally MacLennane’
Every time.
Singing in a fake Dub-a-lin accent, no one’s buying it only the gullible.
Loving the comments here. Can’t stand this support our own nonsense.
The Murder Capital album was better.
Absolutely!! Murder Capital album is a mix of The Bad Seeds and a hint of Ian Curtis. Much more exciting album
I do like the Fontaines album. And find the begrudgery here disappointing to be honest.
Decent group, making music, getting recognition for their efforts.
Agreed.
The Murder Capital have a better debut this year never mind all time debuts.
MBV/The Immediate/The Gloaming all come to mind as being miles above F.DC.
I like the F.DC album though – fair play.
Gibberish lyrics
Garbage instrumentals
Awful Dub impression vocals that only ever hit the tune by accident
Don’t call them punk, they don’t have the energy or attitude that makes you let a decent punk band off the hook for sounding like someone dropped a bus on a bunch of musical instruments
These shysters are enjoying the success that A Lazarus Soul so much more deserve
Versatile are more authentic.
Sold out the 3 arena last week and dueted with Coolio!
It’s on the 30th odd listen that it reveals itself as not a bad pretender to the Heartworm throne. Definitely gets the bronze medal of after top dogs TMC and close second Girl Band. Going on Sunday night so heavy rotation till then. Gonna be big etc. etc.
Heard the name. Never heard the music. Youtubed them.
Won’t be listening again.
What’s everyone’s problem with these guys? Is it that your man is a posh Dub but singing like Damien Dempsey?
Is it any worse putting on an accent from across the Liffey as opposed to across the Atlantic?
He’s from Skerries (iirc) and sings like Adam and Paul.
Phoney baloney!
yeah but he’s hardly the first to pull that
ronnie drew is from dun laoghaire, colin farrell is from castleknock, bono is from glasnevin etc etc etc
Bono doesn’t sing like he’s involved in the Hutch / Kinahan feud though
It’s not just the accent, it’s the facade
Everything about their music is designed to present the kind of ideas more readily associated with the flats in the dismal 70s rather than the leafy burbs in the swinging 90s, it’s completely disingenuous
Hell, it’s not even right to describe them as being a Dublin band, three of them are from the bog and one of them grew up in Spain.
As someone who grew up on the border the line “He spits out ‘Brits Out’ and only smokes Carrolls” really resonates with me. I love the Fontaines DC, great music The Fall meets The Strokes.
