A friend who lives in the area and went regularly to the pool said it was always well attended. It was clearly popular, and a wonderful amenity in the middle of the city. It really should be retained.

do you know what else would be a wonderful amenity? – a metro station

how do you think other cities manage to fit in infrastructure – building have to be demolished all the time

That’d be fine if they provide a new pool before demolishing the current pool. The pool is provided for a reason. This should not be framed as a choice between a train station and a public pool/gym in Dublin city centre.

A metro station is not an amenity in the same sense as the Countess Markievicz pool and gym. I do not say the metro is not needed, but there are other places the station could be put, or, as mentioned by george, another pool and gym, plus all the apartments that will be lost, could be provided before the destruction of the current facility.

Other cities have better planners than is evident in Dublin, and while buildings do need to be demolished to make way for important infrastructure, they usually are more obliging in providing alternatives.

perhaps if there was a metro they could take the metro to another pool

you can’t move the station without moving the tracks that go to the station

No it doesn’t – rafting is ~40-55 pp, family rafting (slow boring rafting) is like 20pp, and kayaking access is ~12.50 per person.

Interesting that the people in Ranelagh object to having a bit of their back road cut off and the plans get redrawn yet the people in and around the Markievicz pool are forced to protest outside the Dáil and it will probably get torn down anyway.

That is not necessarily the greater good. It may be the greater usage, but what of those who then are left without the good this facility gives them? This is the problem with current planning thinking in Dublin: feck those already there, lets get something new and not provide anything like an alternative because of ‘the greater good’!

To be fair there should be more uproar about the apartments being torn down than the gym and pool, there are plenty of pools within and within reach of the city centre

The pool is always very heavily used there are not that many pools which are underused and are accessible at an affordable price. DCC should provide a new gym and pool to replace this one.

I saw the headline in the “latest comments” sidebar and thought Klopp had resigned!

Klopp and Gavin in the same week would have killed me, I’m still recovering from Dalglish in ’91

A glass bottomed pool built above the tracks with the bonus of being a wave pool every few minutes depending on the choo-choo. Commuters can look up at people swimming and swimmers can splash about watching poor souls waiting on the choo-choo.
    Cheque Please.

Sadly in situations like this those that use the amenity are almost the only ones to oppose the change when really the whole country should be backing them on principal – It could be a swimming pool, playground in your locality next time.

Yes Metro station is important and needs to be built but so is learning to swim, exercising and socializing. If the pool must go for the metro then a new pool must be built, no argument, and don’t take no for an answer nor no money excuses. A swimming pool such as this would return far more to community it serves than that white water rafting project.
