Meanwhile, In Naas

at

This morning.

Naas, County Kildare.

Members of the Irish Farmers’ Association (IFA) started a 12-hour beef price protest at an Aldi distribution centre. The farmers are blocking the exit and entrance gates of the centre.

Yep.. and at last the farmers have identified the problem and going after it. The govt are useless. The bottom line is that there should be no below cost selling of key agricultural products as it is the fastest and most effective way to destroy a local economy.

Interesting. But I’d question your conclusion.

That data is quite old – and the dip may be associated with the crash from 2009 to 2011.
The dip is primarily in pig meat. The beef and veal is quite steady (and this protest is about beef).

Gardai standing around scratching their collective hoops instead of doing their jobs and arresting them. Impound the thraaactorrs for a start.

looking at it form another angle…. remember the water protesters wouldn’t allow meters be installed? and the huge amount of Gardai deployed to ensure that the installers could do their jobs as the protests were blocking them from working? Whats the difference here? Same carry-on form the protesters yet the Garda response is markedly different.

    1. Cian

Wait a minute, I don’t think this is the same.
      1. Was there a “huge amount of Gardai deployed to ensure that the [water meter] installers could do their jobs” when the protests originally started? or did the Garda response take a number of weeks before it swung into gear.
      2. Is there the same carry-on from the protesters here? Are they hurling abuse at the truckers and the Garda (like at some of the IW protests)? or is it really a peaceful protest?

Saying all of that, I think if the protest continues to stop trade then the Garda should intervene and clear the roads – arresting any protesters that continue to break the law.

I said Are they hurling abuse at the truckers and the Garda (like at some of the IW protests)?

One example (2nd video I found) of protesters jostling and verbally abusing the Garda. I don’t consider this a “peaceful protest”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hVjeUMzwGF0

Chants of “Sieg Heil” at the cops. Classy.

……or is it really a peaceful protest? was the end of your sentence.
Any violence? ( By the protesters that is)

          3. Cian

Non-violent is not the same as peaceful.

I don’t think that video showed a peaceful protest. It was non-violent, but not peaceful.

Do you think that video showed a peaceful protest?

It’s a well known fact that a big strong farmer could easily take on 100 Gardai, not a bother

Feck the farmers, sitting on their holes getting EU grants for years for set aside land while three quarters of home grown produce went abroad (take sugar beet for instance). Dairy farming is all that’s left, if ye’re not happy with prices why not sell direct to customers. They should be setting up co-operatives stores in every town and county which would generate jobs, get more income for farmers and still the consumer would get their meat at the same or even a lower price than what they pay for at the moment. It’s the retailers that mark up prices, farmers don’t want the full mark up so they’d get their increase and customer still wins. Change my mind.

Why is everyone suddenly against working people getting a fair crack of the whip? When did the comments on Broadsheet get so mean and spiteful?

As for sugar beet, production stopped in 2006. Pay attention! (Sugar beet production started here in the 1850s; decent people across Europe were refusing to eat sugar produced under vicious slave conditions in the Caribbean then; by the 2000s, the wheel had turned and making sugar here was stealing work from hard-pressed people in the Third World.)

    1. GiggidyGoo

And the Sugar Beet production stopped due to FF closing down Mallow and Carlow factories – only to find a few years later that it was a mistaken decision.

Because it’s farmers, they don’t vote right, the intelligentsia didn’t go to college with them, and they probably don’t even listen to good music!

Broadsheet commenters can be quite selective as to who they lean to the left with

      1. curmudgeon

Farmers get half their income from subsidies, how much further left can you go? I’m self employed and I get zero. Do you reckon if my services weren’t as in demand as they used to be and I received massive annual tax payer handouts, all while blocking deliveries to local business and stuffing up Dublin City traffic and refusing to reform environmental practices that I would have people trying to stand up for me on broadsheet??? Oh and blame vegans too (because they abhor animal cruelty and that makes it harder to make a buck).

Farmers want to stay famers even if there’s no money to be made out of it and demand the market be adjusted to them instead of them adjusting to the market.

  5. padmundo

    Fair play to them!

You get nothing without action in this country. The politicians couldn’t give a toss about anything unless it will get them voted back in! Even at that they only pay lip service to the issue until they are back in the cosy comforts of Dail Eireanns golden goose, pouring it’s tax payers money into the personal finances of the grubby handed politicians.

We’d be all better off taking a leaf out of the farmers book and not being pushovers and doormats to the gowls…

  6. Mr. Camomile T

Why is the IFA protesting against the likes of Aldi when it should be tackling the beef barons who are in total control of the market?

Because the IFA is in the pocket of Big Beef and these Aldi protests are about nothing more than saving face after the non-IFA Dublin protests.

  7. GiggidyGoo

So, farmers are stopping hauliers from earning their money. So they’d understand if hauliers blockaded a few farms then? Quid pro quo.
