My Da was working in Limerick in the weeks coming up to Christmas ’82

Any time he hears it on the radio he says
“I always remember driving back to Dublin on Christmas Eve and that song came on the radio”

      It wasn’t released til 1986

I haven’t got the heart to contradict him though :)

Love this song. The husband introduced me to Smith & Burrows a couple of years ago and that song is on the Xmas playlist every year now.

    The Waitresses – Christmas Wrapping

A Blondie inspired new-wave ode to Christmas that unlike other festive tunes isn’t overplayed so I’m always happy to bop along to it after finishing ma’s bottle of Baileys.

I should say that I am not actually a fan of Christmas songs, and in that spirit I have started a petition with my local radio station. If I can manage to have this period go by and NOT hear the awful dirge that is Winter Song, I will be happy :)

    @Nick: Don;t you dare!

Greg Lake-I believe in Father Christmas.Lovely mix of yearning, nostalgia, sadness, with a dash of hope. “The Christmas we get, we deserve”.

“Do they know it’s Christmas?” by Band Aid.

Not because the lyrics are perfect – they aren’t – but it is about compassion for those who are worse off, and wanting to do something about it.

I work in the sector, and no, the lyrics are not perfect. But every year this is one of my favourite songs. So much better the original than the later versions. Perhaps just tapping into an old zeitgeist or whatever, but bring on those lowly bell tolls.

    River by Joni Mitchell

There’s something melancholic and nostalgic and lovely about this song which sums up Christmas to me in a way few other Christmas songs do.

It also happens to be my Xmas party piece after a few drinks, but we’ll say no more on that.

I was surprisingly older before I heard that song! Phenomenal!

If this wins, it is worthy!

Just as an aside I wonder what the studios execs thought when they first hear Fairytale of New York. Did they realise how big it would be? Did it blow their minds?

I remember when I first heard it on the radio. Each time I here it still gives me that chill :)

I should have been online earlier! This is what I would have chosen, so now I have to go look into finding another fave song.

My favourite Christmas movie is Scrooge (1970) featuring Albert Finney.
And my favourite Christmas song is “Thank You Very Much” from that movie.
If you haven’t seen the movie make sure to torrent it for the holidays.
A fantastic Christmas movie musical with a sublime performance from Finney.

    One more for the road.

A Spaceman Came Travelling by Chris de Burgh

What a bizarre, lovely song it is and it’s a perennial Christmas favourite in my house. Always puts a smile on my face.

      1. Brother Barnabas

leaving aside fact that chris de burgh is the donald trump of the music world – all the toxic narcissism, but none of the entertainment that trump at least offers

  9. Rosette of Sirius

It can only be Father Christmas by The Kinks.

Father Christmas was written by band co-founder Ray Davies. It tells the story of a department store Santa who is surrounded by a group of street kids who want money instead of toys. In five lines the chorus captures the mood as this is what the kids sing to the Santa:

Father Christmas, give us some money
We got no time for your silly toys
We’ll beat you up if you don’t hand it over
We want your bread so don’t make us annoyed
Give all the toys to the little rich boys

In other words; it’s all bullpoo. It’s a time for those with money. If your poor it’s a misery. And everywhere, you’re reminded of that.

It’s a great song and pops a pin in the bubble that is the modern commercial Christmas. If you don’t have money, Christmas really is not for you.

Perfect way to describe the season imho. Great melody too!

Amazed this does not get more airplay!

Hi All. I want to apologise for the tone of some of my comments the other day, particularly to the posters who were at the receiving end. Reading back through them, they come across as snide and judgemental, and someone I do not want to be. One of the joys I have had in music is the range, and the joy it brings to others, even if it is something I do not particularly enjoy.

I will still poke fun at songs I am not necessarily a fan of, but my comments were beyond that, and while I can give a reason, I can give no excuse.

    1. Lilly

Haha, de nada Slightly in comparison with John Kelly’s reaction to Selina Cartmell’s choice of Bucks Fizz ‘Making Your Mind Up’ on Mystery Train! Now there’s a man wearing his musical heart on his sleeve…

+ 1 to ‘Baby It’s Cold Outside’. I went searching for Julie London’s version but couldn’t find it.
