This year’s nativity scene at Claremont Methodist church in Los Angeles.
The ‘most well-known refugee family in the world’, according to Pastor Karen Clark Ristine, caged and isolated to highlight both California’s homeless crisis and the separation of migrant children at the US/Mexico border.

edgy. i bet the sheep and cows have been replaced with tofu..
They were not migrants, they were in Jerusalem to take part in a census after which they returned to Nazareth.
The whole story is a fairy tale. As are the sequels.
There were sequels? drn I missed them. Hopefully they don’t mess up and do a prequel.

…Oh!
Ehm, remember the whole ‘fleeing to Egypt with a donkey bit to escape the slaughter of the innocents by Pontius Pilate? That is when they were refugees and migrants.
No, it was King Herod. When he heard from the three Magi that a chisler was born and proclaimed the son of God, he was sure he would be usuped and so ordered all boys in the Bethlehem area under two to be killed. That’s why jesus and his ma and da stayed in Egypt.
Oh, right, you attack Herod while ignoring tthe fact hat he was carrying out policies started by Obama.
Right, sorry! Pilate was the one who washed his hands of him later. Been a while.
A friend of mine once status-posted on FB proclaiming ‘Just back from a tough session at Pilates – I’m going to be dying tomorrow!’
Calling her Jesus ever since.
Bethlehem MaryLou. They were in Bethlehem.
And as Slightly Bemused rightly says, they were very much refugees, fleeing the threat of persecution.
They weren’t migrants, they traveled to an urban centre to be documented and when it was finished they went back home to Nazareth
Deja-Vooo?
They did become refugees later though when Herod went on his killing spree.
Termagant, the Gospel of Matthew contains the Flight into Egypt story. In it the Holy Family were refugees fleeing persecution. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flight_into_Egypt
Jaysus the alt-right are spinning hard..
Is… is there a talking point going around about how the Holy Family aren’t like those pesky illegal Mexicans being caged and seperated by the US government? Because the fundamental spirit of the story of the Holy Family (which iincludes fleeing from a military forced intent on ‘seperating’ them from their child) revolves entrely around the legal technicalities of their citizenship status?
Apparently the bit where they fled from genocide of infants doesn’t count because it didn’t happen when Jesus was born.
How so?
Well, they were clearly a white family of good Anglo-Saxon descent. Sure don’t all the pictures show that?
Two comments making the same rather obtuse point? The same bad-faith interpretation of the scene?
They WERE a refugee family whe they fled to Egypt – and it seems thuddingly wilful not to have a sense of why their story might resonate with modern refugees and migrants and with people concerned with the plight of modern migrants and refugees.
I was trying to be sarcastic. I guess it does not come across in text. Should I adopt the social media option of /s ?
Nah, you’re good, your comment wasn’t even there when I replied.
That Mary wan never worked a day in her life, so a bit of a welfare tourist if you ask me.
They travelled to the city to watch a show with their child and the fact they were brutally murdered in front of him in alley but he overcame the bitterness of the situation to become a crime fighter. This shows…… oh wait, that’s Batman.
No, they put Jesus in a space donkey and sent it to Belthlehem before Nazareth exploded.
And the angels were singing La La La La la La La La La La!
