RTÉ Director General Dee Forbes

This morning.

“I think this is fair value for 44c-a-day per-household; especially in comparison with the subscription costs to other media services; none of which offer anywhere near this level of Irish perspective or output.”

Part of RTÉ Director General Dee Forbes’ opening statement to be read out at an Oireachtas Communications Committee meeting this afternoon.

RTE boss Dee Forbes insists RTÉ amounts to ‘fair value’ compared to likes of Netflix (Independent.ie)

If D4bes is so convinced that what she and RTÉ are offering is what people want, then she needs to change the model as regards payment. PPV or a monthly subscription.
However, the obvious fact here is that she is yet another government-chosen lackey in the state/semi-state sector who has received massive salary and pension entitlements, and who has failed both the public and the boyos that employed her.
A lot of that going around.

True if RTE wants to compare itself to Netflix than it should adopt a like for like business model then see the results.

rather than trimming the fat and evolving they’re trying to convince everyone else that they’re wrong. There’s a whiff of FAIesque arrogance off them

Conor’s tweet shows his lack of understanding of what a public broadcaster is and what a PPV commercial enterprise is, in all fairness.

As much as I agree that there are many issues with RTE, I find ridiculous comparisons like Conor’s tedious to say the least.

I do agree with the point above that Bea would be preferable to Spittle. How much does Bae cost compared to Spittle is another question that is relevant, and one of many factors none of us are privy to.

Exactly. This comparison on the basis of perceived per-month cost is facile at best. Netflix have significant debt from creating content. They are operating at a loss to capture market share, and users are not paying the cost of delivering the content currently. Not to mention, they are engaging in data harvesting on an scale that’s unprecedented for a media publisher.

Hahaha, well said, thanks for pointing that further bit out. Real knee slapping hilarity :0)

Given how the misty eyed diaspora are ever eager for any auld homegrown muck, they should just shut it all down, sell the land, and set up 3 YouTube channels from a back office in Athlone and adbreak the hell out of them, sit back, and watch the paypal millions roll in. Dee and Tubs will be zipping around in Porsche SUVs like the rest of D4 in no time.

doesn’t he have some magic powers ?
            likely doesn’t need mirrors so

and anyway, millie thinks he’s the dogs bollocks and wants to lick him all over

If it means Millie licking me…

            * clears throat *

De laydee in rrrrred, is dawn-sing with me
            (creepy whisper)
            cheek2cheek….

You don’t need to murder Chris de Burgh for me to give you a good lick Bert.

All you have to do is look at me with that twinkle in your eye.

Is that the Cayenne Milly? I have no particular emotions about cars, but not a huge fan of BMWs. They seem to attract a certain type.

“3 YouTube channels from a back office in Athlone and adbreak the hell out of them”

Still about fifty times less ads than RTE player.

If Forbes thinks RTE is comparable to Netflix in quality then let RTE move to an opt-in, monthly fee service. The market will let them know pretty quickly where they stand.

RTE, along with the FAI, are corrupt/bureaucratic relics more suited to Haughey-era Ireland. They’re fighting tooth and nail to keep their inefficiencies and privileges. They both need to be radically reformed, or broken up.

Original National Water Plan = Dinny
      National Broadband Plan = Dinny
      National Broadcasting Plan = Dinny?

  6. lolly

small point but Neflix is 11.99 per month and going up all the time. as for the rest I agree with Clampers.

    1. Cian

Okay, the Netflix player is better than the RTE player.
But RTE wins hands down on: news, weather, current events, radio, orchestra, …

      1. dhod

true. rte also win at the Angelus. Netflix gives us new Scorsese, rte gives us Francis Brennan on holidays

Interesting to note that in the UK the numbers refusing to pay the BBC licence fee are so large there’s plans to either decriminalise non-payment or abolish the fee altogether. We need a mass boycott movement over here.

“Dominic Cummings and senior No10 aides have drawn up plans over the last few weeks re BBC licence fee

They are looking either abolishing it entirely or decriminalising non payment

Source says they want to relieve burden on justice system of chasing people who don’t pay”

  8. Andrew

Do I have to pay for Netflix if I don’t use it? Will I be fined if I don’t pay?
Anyway, not to worry FG bailed them out….again. If they didn’t then FF would have anyway after the next election. So it goes on.
