Shane MacGowan and Victoria Mary Clarke in 2007
On The Late Late Show.
Jennifer O’Brien writes:
Comedian and actor Pat Shortt is in studio, making his way through the audience as his latest character.
With Christmas around the corner, Ryan will be speaking to a number of volunteers who have been working tirelessly with Ireland’s homeless over the past year…
Comedian Jason Byrne will also be joining us, giving his take on recent news stories and chatting about his series of children’s books.
The main event of the evening will see the good and the great of the Irish entertainment and music industry pay tribute to the legendary singer and songwriter Shane MacGowan.
Tipperary’s most famous son is in studio, performing a number of his best-known songs, including a very special rendition of the greatest of all modern-day Christmas songs, Fairytale of New York.
Over the course of a lively evening full of songs, chat and laughter, Glen Hansard and Lisa O’Neill pay tribute to Shane, joining his band for a stunning rendition of A Rainy Night in Soho.
Guests including Aidan Gillen, Patrick Bergin, Moya Brennan, Philomena Begley and Pat McCabe will join Ryan, Shane, and his wife Victoria Mary Clarke, discussing the writing of some of his best-known songs and the impact he and The Pogues have had on the Irish music industry.
Shane’s sister Siobhán MacGowan, journalist and musician, will also be chatting with Ryan. US politician Martin O’Malley has flown in for the evening, giving a hat-tip to Shane and the impact his music had on him as an Irish-American.
The Late Late Show on RTÉ One at 9.35pm.
And that’s hat Dee Forbes thinks is Goog Value? I wish they’d give Shane a break too. He was wheeled out on an American show last christmas and it was painful and sad to watch.
Oh, I might watch a bit of that, Shane deserves every accolade he gets, and much respect to the wonderful Victoria Mary Clarke, she has been his rock and possibly he might not be with us anymore without her love, loyalty and patience.

jason byrne. why?
surpasses all understanding.
Can’t wait to hear Jason Byrne’s take on the current news stories. He’s so zany..
Oh gawd.
Shane McGowan and Wife mentioned on RTE. As regular as the Angelus. Dee Forbes desperate for a Toy Show followup. Too soon for SInead.
Could the RTE PR + Communications not supply an image of Shane MacGowan and Victoria Mary Clarke in 2019?
McGowan hasn’t written a decent song in the lifetime of most Spotify users. Get over it.
He’s the winter Christy Dignam.

Most Spotify users won’t write a decent song in their lifetime.
Shane McGowan is one of the most talentless and overrated musicians to ever grace entertainment. There, I said it.
Incorrect on both counts
I beg to differ. May I add he probably wouldn’t even be so popular if it wasn’t for his appearance and drunken delivery. We love an aul singin drunk so we do. Sure isn’t he gas all de same.
He’s a big fan of yours too.
@Charlie – You don’t sound very convincing! I suspect you were not a fan of that style of music or the man himself and that’s fair enough but to say he was talentless is unfair and just wrong. It was a pity the drink (and drugs) was such a strong influence in his life and I guess his life would have been much happier if he had control over his addictions. His lyrics and melodys will stand the test of time that’s for sure and we were probably robbed off a few more gems if he had continued to write in his 40s and 50s.
True, I’m not a fan of the music. I’m not a lover of the drunken nasal moan that he and the like manufacture. The whole trad poo is primarily driven by drink and nostalgia. I detest the way we put these drunks on pedestals and I see nothing but above average creativity in the basic formula he uses to puts songs together. He also spent much of his time covering the same poo the Wolfe Tones, Dubliners etc did. All drink fueled scrotelike singalongs.
Let’s hear your material
Post a sound cloud link
Ha…yea that’s a good idea.
