I once rapped my way through a karaoke version of this – it does not work with a south Dublin accent

  1. Brother Barnabas

has to be Johnny Cash’s Cocaine Blues, telling the story of poor old Willy Lee who

“Early one mornin’ while makin’ the rounds
I took a shot of cocaine and I shot my woman down”

convicted of murder in the first degree, he gets sentenced to 99 years in Folsom, it ends with some sage advice:

“Come on you’ve gotta listen unto me
Lay off that whiskey and let that cocaine be”

There’s SNOW business like show business…

I’ll get my coat. And with snow forecast, I’ll get me hat and scarf too…

  3. RobbieC

“I was following the pack, all swallowed in their coats
With scarves of red tied ’round their throats
To keep their little heads from falling in the snow
And I turned ’round and there you go
And Michael, you would fall and turn the white snow red
    As strawberries in the summertime”

‘Watching Trees’ by Eleven Pond is a mid-80’s synth pop classic that should have been a hit

I want to be, in a tree
    Watching you, watching trees
    Memories of the trees
    Watching you, watching me

I stand alone in the cold
Of an old, old train station
It was cold in the snow
    Wind did blow, all alone

    Snow is falling all around
Seven o’clock and the roads are blocked
    So I walk downtown
    There’s no-one around

I walk in a bar and immediately
    I sense danger
You look at me girl, as if I was some kind of a
    A total stranger

Where did you get that blank
    Expression on your face?

  7. Otis Blue

    “So I packed my bags
    Brushed my cap
    Walked out into the world
    Seventeen years old
    Never kissed a girl
    Took the train to Voronezh
That was as far as it would go
Changed my sacks for a uniform
Bit my lip against the snow…”

The Snows They Melt The Soonest – Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh & Ger O Donnell

There’s so many versions of this traditional English folk song that dates back to at least the early 1800s but this one is as good as any I’ve heard. Recorded two months ago – just two people in a living room with a guitar and a shruti box.

  9. Kingfisher

A Tory Island fishermen went out one day and was struggling to make a catch. He went to places he’d never fished before, and cast his net again and got a heavy catch. When he pulled it in, there was a woman in the net. He brought her back home, took the cloak she wore and warmed her, and she learned to speak and laugh. He married her, and hid away the cloak in a chest.
Two children were born to them. One day a few years later the children were playing and opened the chest and found the cloak. “Mammy, Mammy, put it on, you’ll look lovely” – but as soon as she had the cloak she fled back to the sea, and lost all her humanity – including the ability to laugh. But she longed for her children, and would swim along the shore singing to them, while the children ran and sang back to her.
This is a song traditionally sung as a lullaby to children whose mother has died.

Is cosúil gur mheath tú nó gur thréig tú an greann
(You seem to be pining and forsaking the fun)
Tá an sneachta go freasach fá bhéal na n-abhainn
(The snow is pounding down at the mouth of the river)
Do chúl buí daite is do bhéilín sámh
(Your golden hair and your sweet mouth)
Siúd chugaibh Mary Chinidh ‘s í ‘ndiaidh an Éirne ‘shnámh
(Here’s to you, Mary Kenny, swimming against the tide)

A mháithrín mhilis duirt Máire bhán
    (Sweet mother, said fair-haired Mary)
Fá bhruach an chladaigh ‘s fá bhéal na trá
(From the banks of the ocean and the mouth of the strand)
    Maighdean mhara mo mhaithrín ard
(My noble mother is a mermaid)
Siúd chugaibh Mary Chinidh ‘s í ‘ndiaidh an Éirne ‘shnámh
(Here’s to you, Mary Kenny, swimming against the tide)

Tá mise tuirseach agus beidh go lá
(I’m tired and and will be till dawn)
Mo Mháire bhroinngheal ‘s mo Phádraig bán
(My grown-up Mary and my fair-haired Patrick)
Ar bharr na dtonna ‘s fá bhéal na trá
(On the peaks of the waves and at the mouth of the strand)
Siúd chugaibh Mary Chinidh ‘s í ‘ndiaidh an Éirne ‘shnámh
(Here’s to you, Mary Kenny, swimming against the tide)

So many possibilities. So hard to choose.

I would have thought this would have been suggested already but I see it hasn’t! The prize MUST be mine at last…

    Tori Amos – Winter

Snow can wait, I forgot my mittens
Wipe my nose, get my new boots on
I get a little warm in my heart when I think of winter
I put my hand in my father’s glove
I run off where the drifts get deeper
Sleeping beauty trips me with a frown
I hear a voice “You must learn to stand up for yourself”
“‘Cause I can’t always be around”
He says when you gonna make up your mind
When you gonna love you as much as I do
When you gonna make up your mind
‘Cause things are gonna change so fast

I never fail to be moved by this beautiful ode to the passage time, growing up and the wisdom of a parent.
Stunning musicianship, singing, profound lyrics and snow mentioned (just once, in the first line)

  11. Rosette of Sirius

“Fifteen Feet of Pure White Snow” by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds.

“It’s too quiet in here and I’m beginning to freeze, I’ve got icicles hanging from my knees, Under 15 feet of pure white snow”

    Love that line…

    Also, a great vid…

Belle and Sebastian – The Fox in the Snow

Not everyone’s cup of tea, Belle and Sebastian have been going since the mid nineties, they have created 10 albums and if you like their style, there’s not a bad album among the 10. The Scottish band grew their audience when their song, The Boy with the Arab Strap, was used on the credits of “Teachers”, a UK sitcom from around 2001. Delicate, soft, intricate and melodic is their signature style and The Fox is a fine example of their art. Are you a fox, a girl, a boy or a kid?

Kid in the snow, way to go
It only happens once a year
It only happens once a lifetime
    Make the most of it
    Second just to being born
    Second to dying too
    What else would you do?

  13. Slightly Bemused

I did not see it yet, so if I missed it I apologise. But does a snowbound siren in a winter’s dawn count? Appropriate for me today as the last few nights I had the weirdest dreams, including ones with Bart Simpson, for some reason. Sadly, I recall not the details, so it seems even my own crazy dreams will get me nowhere :)

But I do recall that Paul Brady is an incredible songwriter and performer. Allow me to share one of my favourite live performances, from Later with Jules Holland:
