Mittens, 15 feet of snow (4, 75 metres!), darkness, icicles, the protagonist starting to freeze, our favorite Australian crooner summons a fierce and frightful picture of the winter in this Behemoth of a song…
Listen to it by the fireplace with a hot cocoa for best results.

Here Comes The Sun by The Beatles…

    And before you cry foul….

“Little darling, it’s been a long cold lonely winter
Little darling, it feels like years since it’s been here

Here comes the sun (doo doo doo)
Here comes the sun, and I say
    It’s all right”

  3. Clampers Outside

The first thing that popped into my head, and I’ve played it three times on the way home :)

Damn I still love this track!

Back in 1987, just when I thought thrash metal couldn’t get any better this happened….

    Nuclear Winter by Sodom

Classic anti-aircraft themed thrash metal packed with great riffs, Angelripper’s heavily chilling vocal style (fairly unique for the time, I thought) and brilliant drum work… what’s not to love :)

It is far too early on Sunday morning, but never too early for this song. And such a great version – one voice, one guitar. And just watch them, they play beautifully off each other.

Smashing Pumpkins was a great cover, but you cannot beat the original.

I have happy memories of listening to Chris de Burgh’s Lonely Sky.

Bought from a market stall during a cold, crisp autumn, the Spanish Train album has a Christmas feel to it with A Spaceman Came Traveling as the climax.

    Lonely Sky contains the lines:
I’m huddled in this french cafe
I never thought I’d see the day,
But winter’s here and summer’s really over,
Even the birds have packed up and gone,

Peeling tangerines in my lonely garret as snowflakes sparkled and fluttered onto the grey granite streets of my Yorkshire childhood home, I couldn’t but help thinking that Chris had sold out to Mammon. Arguably he sold out with Far Beyond These Castle Walls, but that’s for another day.

Still today, when I hear this song, I think of northern winters brightened by the memory of Spanish heat, bound in a tangerine.

I’d say they did it to annoy you.

Was tempted to nominate another CdeB song just to make you twitch. But then I thought to myself, it’s Christmas.

        So, I’ve won then?

Not new to the site, been posting sporadically for the last few years, obviously not said anything to rile you before.

I’m agreeing with you that most of his oeuvre is pretty odious, but some of the early stuff is OK.

Pixies cover of Neil Young’s Winterlong. Not a well known song by either of them, but made it onto a mixtape I gave to a girl once when she was going off travelling. She came back and now she’s the missus.

Love Unlimited – It may be winter outside(but in my heart it’s spring)

From their 1972 album, From a Girl’s Point of View We Give to You… , this song was written by Barry White who later married one of the group. Love Unlimited was formed to providing backing vocals to Mr White and their success helped to launch his career with his first album in 1973.

    When the temperature dips
    I miss my baby’s arms
    His tender finger tips
Knows just how to keep me warm

    It may be zero degrees
    With the snow falling down
But I’ve got warm and tender love
Just as long as he’s around

A bit off piste maybe, but I think Pure Imagination does it for me. Can’t hear it without thinking of sleepy Christmas afternoons surrounded by selection boxes and the sound of Gene Wilder’s lovely warble.

Maybe this is the wrong post… sometime people post on the wrong post and this is what happens…Here are a few suggestions for Broadsheet 2020…

Option A – Bring back Broadsheet on the tele.

Option b – …somehow curate these Golden Disks post suggestions as some sort themed playlist.

Option C – I don’t even have to tell you what C is… you know!

Thank you all, Happy Yule season!
