I wish the Garda goodwill in apprehending the vile killer(s) of Mr Francis Dunne in Cork . Cathal o Brien , 23 years , a university graduate, was murdered and dismembered in Cork City in 1994. His remains were never found and his loving family still make appeals for closure after all these years. Cathal was a fine young man and took a year off after his graduation before embarking on a career. He volunteered with the Simon Community in Cork during this transition and was violently murdered. (Unsolved). Kevin Ball, another victim of this brutal crime also remains unsolved since 1994 (remains never located either).
    R.I.P.

          1. Catherine costelloe

He had help in disposing of the remains. Keystone cops come to mind. Seamus O Brien used to travel from his home in Wexford to Cork with neighbours and friends to dig areas in Lothmore woods for his sons bones. It’s time victims are put at top of the list — you won’t meet better or nicer than the abandoned O Brien family.

The RTE report on Frankie Dunne’s death was something else. ‘Decapitated man identified as as… The results of a post-mortem report confirm that Mr Dunne died violently.’ Any passing luderachan could have saved the pathologist a trip so. The poor man’s head did not fall off in the wind.

    1. dav

The dismemberment (cutting up of the body) could have occurred post mortem (which means “after death), as I suspect you probably need such terms to be explained to you. Any passing amadán might have suspected that cutting up the body was to try and hide it….

        1. dav

The point of the pathologist (who you think should not have bothered) was to find out if the man was dead before or after his head was removed, understand?

          1. Lilly

My comment, if you care to re-read it, was on the RTE news report. If a body has been decapitated, it’s fair to assume the person met a violent end. It would have been comical if the subject matter weren’t so grisly. Stop making such heavy weather of it, and thanks for the definitions but, like most people, I have Google if I need it.

Could I give a “Yay” to Bernard Purcell of the Irish World . He appeared on BS on the telly, he came across as a lovely guy. Also, Happy New Year to everyone on BS. I was going to do the wittering thing…

  4. Deckydancer

Thank GOD for Vanessa Feltz and her joyful and jubilant tips in the daily express, 2020 is looking better already.

  5. GiggidyGoo

Eamon Ryan gets more and more laughable by the day. An army of bulldozers (spewing diesel fumes?) for the bogs. Utter idiot.

    1. Cú Chulainn

When I come to think of the various complete idiots that I have met in my life, not one could be described as such a great big complete idiot and amadan as Eamonn.

    2. Nigel

That’s your reaction to the idea of restoring our surviving bogs and turning them into carbon sinks? Utter idiot is right.

Why do you bother replying to attention-seeking know-nothings?
It doesn’t portray YOU in a positive light, either.

The newspapers clearly don’t give a toss about Australia and its desperate fires and entrapment of folk within them. People gathering on beaches ready to take to the water if the fires encroach, appealing to the army to get involved.

Government decides to continue with Sydney fireworks.

    1. dav

According to the Daily Mail, it’s the peoples fault because they “refused” (DM’s words) to evacuate..

I love the Guardian and I like Megan Rapinoe but making her footballer of the year is the most Guardian thing ever.

    1. Brother Barnabas

      I see where you’re coming from but…

has any other footballer’s impact extended as far and wide as her’s this year?

      1. bertie blenkinsop

She’s high profile, she’s controversial but she’s not even the best player in the US team imo.
And we’re lucky to be living in an era when arguably the greatest ever, Messi, is playing.

        1. Rosette of Sirius

She is winner of the Ballon d’Or Féminin and named The Best FIFA Women’s Player in 2019. All because she won a World Cup winners medal this year. What man has achieved that his year?

Did Messi win a World Cup winners medal? Ever?

Or, is it only humans with penises can qualify for such accolades?

Her achievements this year – on the pitch – makes her worthy.

    2. Charlie

I don’t get it either. She was news for 4 weeks, said stuff, had a funky haircut and played nice football. Before the ladies World Cup she was a talented footballer, after the World Cup she was more popular with the press.
However to proclaim her footballer of the year when Messi, Ronaldo, Salah etc are practically performing miracles every week is tokenism. Journalists are such saps.

      1. Ambivalent Gendered Brit

Millions of people, women and girls in particular, will be inspired by her example.
Not only as a footballer but as a person of principle.
Ronaldo is an alleged rapist, persuade me he’s not a horrible person, and Messi is a tax cheat.
        You’ve got blinkers on.

        1. dav

crying because their multi-millionaire “heroes” didn’t get another acknowledgement for doing something that they already get well rewarded for..

        2. Charlie

No blinkers here honey. I know tokenism when I see it. Your words “alleged” and “persuade me” tell me all I need to know about your agenda.

          1. Ambivalent Gendered Brit

            Don’t honey me bitch

The fact is that the people you favour are not leaders off the field – if you’re able to provide an argument do so.

          2. Charlie

There are plenty of far superior footballers doing wonderful things off the pitch that go unmentioned. Charities, working with kids etc etc. Get off your feminist high horse and get real.

        3. Ambivalent Gendered Brit

Messi and Ronald could do more to speak up and highlight issues like racism in men’s football (a point well made by Rapinoe herself during the year).

The likes of George Weah, Didier Drogba and even a somewhat maligned figure like Craig Bellamy lead by example on and off the pitch. Your attitude and that of Charlie below smacks of plain old fashioned sexism and tired old misognystic tropes about female achievement.

          1. Charlie

Messi and Ronaldo are footballers. They’re “speaking up” has zero to be their athletic ability. You do understand the award was for best “footballer”, right?
What you’re looking for is a not a footballer but a politician. Get a grip woman!

          2. Ambivalent Gendered Brit

It’s harder to get a grip when the other party possesses such a tiny little wiener

          3. scottser

Craig Bellamy was a mouth and a cheat. I appreciate the point you’re trying to make but that’s a poor example to give.

          4. f_lawless

From what I read, she said the following:
“I want to shout, ‘Cristiano, Leo, Zlatan [Ibrahimovic], help me’. These big stars do not engage in anything when there are so many problems in men’s football.”

“Do they have the fear of losing everything? Who would scratch Messi or Ronaldo’s names from the world of football for a statement against racism or sexism?”

Last seaon Ronaldo made a strong statement in defence of Kalidou Koulibaly, a Seria A player who’d been subjected to racism:

Ronaldo posted: “In the world and in football there always needs to be education and respect. No to racism and to any sort of insult and discrimination!!!” with a photo of him together with Kalidou.

            https://eu.usatoday.com/story/sports/soccer/2018/12/27/ronaldo-speaks-out-on-racism-after-chants-aimed-at-koulibaly/38802021/

Ronaldo, Messi and Ibrahimovic have appeared in an anti-racism video sponsored by UEFA

Why the need to throw those players under a bus with accusations that are unfair / misleading? Is this really about urging football stars to join together to fight discrimination or more about portraying herself as morally superior?

          5. Ambivalent Gendered Brit

            You tell me f_lawless
I’m sure you’ll have some groundbreaking insight from Craig Murray on this

          6. f_lawless

I am telling you my opinion. The language she used in dismissing the previous efforts of Ronaldo et al is divisive and makes one wonder is it motivated by narcissism (which footballers, including Ronaldo et al are famed for)

  8. Verbatim

100,000 Irish passports claimed by Brit-Irish people. Any figures on Irish people looking for British duel nationality, would it not be a good passport to have for the future, if you could get it. Just wondering what the advantages might be… ?

    1. Ringsend Incinerator

In fairness the difference between Brit-resident whingers getting Irish passports and the FG electorate in Dun Laoghaire Rathdown getting them is negligible.

    1. Archie

Frightening stuff going on in Australia at the moment. The carry on from Scott Morrison on all of this is nothing short of shameful.

      1. Verbatim

Why fireworks, which is a pollutant and a very expensive one at that going up in smoke, still a tradition, and all this talk of the climate…I’d reduce it to once every 5 years, if I ran things

        1. Nigel

The disconnect between governments and the reality of the climate crisis is becoming more and more like a heavy-handed satrie about politicians deliberately disconnected from reality.
