      Not the time perhaps?

You don’t have to be a fan to realise that now isn’t the time or place to be getting a dig in, regardless of how you feel about her.

I’ve never got this Irish thing of not saying anything negative about those who have recently died. What’s wrong with that? If not now, when? In Spain, for example, when someone famous dies they get on the radio a person to eulogize the deceased and another to say what the deceased did that was bad or could’ve been done better. It’s a saner way, more grown up. This nonsense of not criticizing. We’re adults, we should stop with the childish clapping.

        1. Ghost of Yep

You’re spot on if your criticism was anything but a childish proclamation that she was THE voice of the establishment.

          1. Amy

Apologies. ONE of the voices of the establishment. She really tried to shut down the Michael Colgan story.

        2. Slightly Bemused

Amy, it is simple really. The wider public say the nice things while the family get to slag them off in private. Once that is done, usually after the funeral, then the public can get properly stuck in. :)

Seriously, my understanding is that this is a custom that predates Christianity in Ireland, and there was a set period for mourning in which only good could be said of the dead to allow them to travel to the other side, sometimes Tír na nÓg. To speak ill of them would cause them to be rejected, and they come back to haunt you in revenge.

Sorry, going by memory here – I will try to find out where I learned that and share it.

          1. Brother Barnabas

does that apply when chris de burgh dies?

(or is he dead already? havent checked in a while)

…I love Rachael English…she would be the perfect host to follow on from Marion…a voice that defies the law of gravitas…but…anyone other than O’Connor…

    1. Slightly Bemused

I will be listening in on Saturday, and I agree Rachael will be a good replacement. I think I will have a long lie-in on Sunday, though.

    1. Slightly Bemused

We may differ on this, but I have a lot of respect for Aine Lawlor, and think she is one of the best in RTE. However, I would agree that this is not a format she would be best suited to.

Audrey Carville, though, would I think be a good choice, especially after her Late Debate experience. And I have heard some of her interviews, and I do like her style with people.

      1. Lilly

I have no strong views on Aine one way or the other but she used to fill in for Marian occasionally a few years ago and it wasn’t pretty. I can think of a few people who’d be worse though: Miriam or Kathryn Thomas. Shudder.

    Not if you paid me.

Such tributes are best, and will be, delivered from the altar. RIP.

    1. Slightly Bemused

I respectfully disagree. I have lost many colleagues and friends over the years, and collective remembrances can be therapeutic for the friends and colleagues.
Did you ever leave a job, or have a colleague leave, and a farewell party was held, where memories were shared? This is not very dissimilar, if a little more permanent.
If I worked in a place for 40 years, I would be touched and honoured by them wanting to remember me. Give her colleagues the space to remember their friend. I am sure not all will be genuine, but the vast majority will be.

      1. Ringsend Incinerator

        Oh fupp RTE, boomer.

I have left jobs. Professionally. But then I don’t work in the public sector and don’t expect a fupping party for me.

If you want to bring “colleagues” into a family non-social event you really need to scroll back into last week’s #marian stream on Twitter.

  3. Truth in the News

RTE have spent all day eulogizing her demise does not any other person
who passed away not count in their scheme of things, it shows how much
RTE has become so indulged in themselves and to hell with the rest of us
Perhaps they might invoke Yeat’s apt epitaph “Cast a Cold Eye …and let the
    Dead Rest:

      And it’s their preferred content

RTE is a public broadcasting service giving the public what they want today – to pay tribute to a broadcaster whose career spanned four decades, who is held in affection by many. Marian Finucane helped pull this country out of the dark ages and changed the lot of women. The eighth amendment was finally repealed in 2018, a mere 40 years after she documented one woman’s journey to England for a termination. Her contributions to public discourse has been massive. People around the country will feel the loss tomorrow.

  5. Truth in the News

RTE have for quiet some time have been bombarding the public with what
they think the public should hear, and not what the public want to hear, was there
ever a discussion on Finucane’s program on the excessive payments made
to broadcasters by RTE, how many times was times was Tim Pat Coogan on
in comparison to Ken Murphy…….there needs to be a clear out in RTE and to
claim that it ‘s a public service entity is a joke…..all it is, is a pillar of the
    Establishment

    1. Clampers Outside

If you listened to her show you’d know the answer to the excessive payments is ‘yes’

  6. Truth in the News

All those who are over paid were on justifying what they got themselves or
through their tax efficient front companies……who fronted for “Montrose”….?

    1. Lilly

Marian was unapologetic about her salary, reportedly saying, there are plenty of male mediocrities making more. How true.

Geraldine Kennedy made a good point when she said much of the focus has been on Marian’s early career, whereas for the past 15 years, she has successfully occupied what was up until then regarded as the weekend graveyard shift, and she has died leaving a void in listeners lives.

Listening to all the tributes over the past few days, what strikes me most is that she seems to have had a great gift for friendship.

  7. Manta Rae

No slight on Marian Finucane intended but the message from one listener, comparing the late broadcaster with the Noble Prize for Literature winner Seamus Heaney, which English read out, shows how far up its own behind RTE is
