Last night.

On RTÉ’s Room To Improve, gardener Diarmuid Gavin, above right, teased architect Dermot Bannon, above left, about having pampas grass in his garden.

On the show, Mr Bannon is renovating a property he bought for him and his family in Drumcondra, Dublin 3, and the final results of the makeover will be revealed on RTÉ One next Sunday night.

Pampas grass?

In 2017, the UK Independent reported:

Pampas grass sales have plummeted due to their particular sexual connotations.

Once a common plant outside suburban houses, pampas grass became known as a sign that the residents were swingers.

The plant, native to South America, serves as a signal to passers-by.

Meanwhile…

Maeve O’Hair, in Tipperary, tweetz:

Morto here after Diarmuid Gavin‘s revelations on Room To Improve with Dermot Bannon. Full frontal pampas grass and I as innocent as the day is long…

“pampas grass became known as a sign that the residents were swingers”

When I read that I must admit that I burst out laughing. The first place I saw pampas grass was outside the house of my next door neighbour here in a little (at the time tiny) rural Kildare town. The house was owned by an elderly lady, sadly now passed away, and she was of the very stern, very Catholic, blue-rinse brigade type. The notion that she might be a swinger boggles the mind!

      I’d never heard that before;
…although I do know that weeds growing in a garden is a sign that non-gardeners live in the house.

(Must keep an eye on neighborhood planting this Spring).

Oh, I’d heard of it.. and in a joking manner referred to it when visiting one of the little Cú’s friends homes, which sported a fine bush in the front garden.

If I had in anyway fancied either or both of them it might have been different. The first of many an awkward pick up after that.

‘Drumcondra, Dublin 3’ – it’s always a hoot when Bodger tries to locate anywhere that isn’t in Dublin 2, 4, 6 or 8.

I do apologise Rob – that’s because it doesn’t matter if it’s 3,7,9 or 11… it’s always going to be just somewhere on de northside..!!!

Seriously Rob, you need to have a chat with yourself, especially considering you’re a FG meme living at Irish taxpayers’ expense in Belgium.

      Pampas grass in deed…
