    Huge admiration for the Healey-Raes.
In a land of parish pump politics there are no greater experts at gaming a corrupt system to benefit their voters and themselves.
They’re the inevitable by-product of Proportional Representation and they ensure that whenever the Leinster House poppinjays get ideas about their station there’s always the whiff of the farmyard to bring them to their senses.
    Away the caps.

    …I don’t get it.

Am I missing something? There should be no advantage to them of people voting this way, the surplus votes will be distributed anyway and both end up with the same number of votes.

The only thing I can think of would be if all their voters were too stupid to do anything other than put an X down for michael, so votes don’t get transferred.

They need to manage the first preferences so that the second placed Healy doesn’t get eliminated before he has a chance to collect that surplus. They also probably need several other candidates to be eliminated so that can get transfers from them.

If you’re counting on transfers from others as they are eliminated you need to be ahead of them, otherwise it’s you that gets eliminated!

Ireland’s wealthiest TDs have been revealed in a new political rich list, compiled by the Sunday Independent.

In second place is Michael Healy-Rae, the Kerry TD who’s been nicknamed “by far the biggest landlord in the Dáil,” as he currently owns 10 rental properties. His estimated wealth stands at €5.4 million.
