    The end of an era.
A legend will no longer be gracing the iconic grounds of his chosen sport.
After 25 years at the top of his game it’s over.
    Finished.
    The End.
Billy Cooper – the trumpeter who leads the thousands of Barmy Army supporters who follow England’s cricket team around the world is retiring.
    Sad.

Good Lord this is bad news.
Who will lead the lads in their traditional rousing chorus of Jerusalem ?
    A giant of the game.
    Devastated.

In fairness, and as my dear old pappy used to say, you should as nobody else is gonna blow it for you.

I must admit I had not heard of Kobe Bryant before the announcement of his death, but my thoughts are with his family, who have lost also his daughter Gianna. I also send my condolences to the families of the others who were killed. It appears they were travelling to a youth basketball tournament, so possibly other team mates of Gianna’s and their parents also lost. This will hit a whole community.

And the pilot’s family also, who have lost a dear one.

Not really. He’s an American basketball star. How is it relevant to an Irish person?

I’m not a golf fan, but I’ve heard of Tiger Woods; Kobe Bryant was probably the other most famous athlete in the world for the past 20 years.

Irish Ladies Basketball was on the telly last night. When was the last time we saw ladies golf on RTE?

Rob_G: I take your point, but it is more to do with my career: It had me in a lot of remote places around the world with little local reporting, particularly during what I now know was the main part of Kobe’s active career. Locally, the only international sports reporting were the Premiership matches, or other soccer tournaments. Even with that, my utter lack of interest in any sport other than international rugby meant I would not have been able to name a soccer player. I struggle with all but the biggest names in rugby also.

My comment was not in any way meant to belittle Kobe. Indeed reading the tributes and information on his life, I am a little surprised I had not heard of him, and it seems he was an incredible man. Very loving of and supportive of his daughters, too, which is a subject close to my heart.

I have not heard of his pilot either, or any of the other passengers, and my sympathies go out to each of their families equally.

I didn’t want it to come across as me having a go, SB; I was more genuinely surprised that people weren’t so familiar with him.

Oh, no worries. I did not take it as a dig, but rather as confusion, just as you say. I thought an explanation was in order, is all :)

He’s a household name to anyone who enjoys or reads anything about sport. People who never read/bother with the world beyond politics, entertainment, art or culture worry me greatly.

hadn’t a clue, never watched even 5 minutes of the game, looks suspiciously like fat people playing cricket …

      my condolences for the family

I have little interest in Sport but I have heard of him. He is world famous. I have no interest in haute couture but I have heard of Yves st Laurent.

It’s a general knowledge thing. useful for pub quizzes at any rate.

Just in case anyone has forgotten today is International Holocaust Remembrance Day around the world.
It commemorates the genocide that resulted in not just the the deaths of 6 million Jews but also 11 million others, by the Nazis and their collaborators.
It also reminds me of a feller called Sir Nicholas Winton.
    An extraordinary man.
