Summerhill, Dublin 1.

Seth McGuinness writes:

Here is a snapshot of what is regularly going on from the people living in the ‘apartments’ in Summerhill.

For years people have pleaded with Dublin City Councilcouncil to do something about it (after all they’re the council), but nothing has been done.

It is happening in broad daylight with no attempt to hide the activity.

As I’ve said, this is a snapshot, the level of on street dumping in the north of the city is astonishing and the place is turning into a slum.

People should be held to account.

Anyone?

Thats usually the case. They can spend the money on drink, take aways and sky sports, but couldnt be bottomed to pay for their rubbish.

Exactly. But it’s not PC to say that. It’s one of the few direct ‘taxes’ and people can’t be arsed paying it. It’s the same on Seville Place every time I drive by but to be fair I don’t think it’s the ‘locals’ there. It’s like with the water charges, which I agreed with, for mainly environmental reasons. A number of people always object when they are asked to pay for what they use and want everything handed to them. The excuse “it’s paid by general taxation” is fine, except there’s a relatively small section of the population actually paying income tax to pay for it. VAT etc plays a part, but not as much.

“The community” is just the same in Dublin 8. They have other things to be spending their money on than their rubbish. They are used to getting their asses wiped for them and have no bother littering their own neighbourhood as the council will always have to take it away in the end.

I’ve made this point several times on this site: why are we subsidising large numbers of people who don’t work, and who have no intention in getting a job, to live within one mile of the centre of Dublin? They’re not even willing to meet the tiny, tiny contribution expected of them (water charges, bin charges) for all of the free money that they receive.

          1. ReproBertie

Out of sight out of mind? They won’t suddenly start paying for their bins just because they’ve been shifted outside the M50.

            @Repro –

Perhaps not. But I don’t see any reason to continue to subsidise living in some of the most expensive real estate in the country, while tens of thousands of workers have to commute in from the the far-reaches of Dublin and beyond every morning.

    Re-municipalise waste collection.
Councils need to subcontract waste collection FOR ALL to the private operators, and pay for it out of Local Property Tax increase on households (almost certainty a reduction on the current bin bills).
Relying on private households to do the right thing has not worked and turned many urban areas into dumps.

        Its not impossible.
We keep banging on about the Scandinavian model. If we want that, this is surely a necessary and popular step.

        1. Jake38

This is not Scandinavia. This is a post-colonial society characterized by dependency, begrudgery and cute hoordom.

You are correct in all of the above! Agree, agree, agree!
(but I still want my bin collected from a household rate that is mandatorally applied to me)

This is ireland where city dwellers are just filthy pigs
End all property tax and charges like waste

Bring in charges like France where you pay foncia charges or rates including your TV Licence road tax and if you do it pay it’s taken off your wages or social welfare
You get a Itemised list of where the charges go and it lists all services and it goes to councils

Well in fairness, suggesting not dumping is beyond the remit of the working class and we can’t possibly expect better and to do so is privileged is arguably pretty condescending. Sincerely, a member of the working class capable, like all my forefathers and family, of observing basic civic manners.

    1. theo kretschmar schuldorff

Yep – German immigrants are responsible for all the dumping. I knew it was German immigrants!

It’s depressing how little civic pride we appear to have in Ireland. Most people don’t give a fupp, it seems.

This shot is taken outside a row of privately owned and rented houses. But blame people in council flats anyway?
Most of the dumping in the north inner city is from people in airbnb, short-term lets and bedshare slums where the owners refuse to provide proper bins or deal with the rubbish themselves.

I see 2 virgin media boxes in the rubbish. The serial numbers should be on the underside of the boxes (if anyone is passing) and will be traceable to the account holder.

Looks like a landlord cleared the duvets & leftovers from 2 flats, painted them, installed 2 Virgin boxes and dumped all the crap on the path…

same on the gaffs near me on clanbrassil st., they pick a spot and then thats it, thats where they put all their rubbish. same across from where i work, theres flats and they actually have skips provided, and they throw their rubbish off the balconys, if it goes in the skip, grand, if not, they just leave it, scattered all over the street. not bottomed to go down and put it safely in. they play by no rules. no accountability, nothing.

Apartment complexes usually have all these utilities in the monthly charge…. are ya sure it is from apartments?

  8. Elen

It’s often tenants who struggle to pay rent. Wouldn’t it be easier to make the landlords pay rubbish, and let rubbish collections be taken care by the Council as it used to be, rather than private concerns. It’s appalling alarm that you have to walk a lengthy stretch to find a bin, and they’re full to the brim. Also the council seems to only clean the streets were concilies live. I tell you, service is not their motto, though they charge for it, it’s lacking.

They did that in Limerick. Called it regeneration. Uncivilised morons were spread like rats throughout the surrounding villages to sell their drugs and rob houses ect.
