The Rare Oul’ Times

My restored and colourised photo of a bustling Thomas Street in the Dublin Liberties with Meath Street on the right.I would date the photo as early 1970s going by Ford Cortina Mk lll that features in the photo which was launched at the 1970 Earl’s Court Motor Show.

Bakers is still there, but the Powers Distillery on the left is gone. You can still see Kelly’s Timber Yard and the Penny Bank in the background

it has the bang of march, 1972 about it.
you can almost hear ‘give ireland back to the irish’ playing in the background..

Geat work Rob. Looks like it was taken opposite The Clock.

Don’t think that’s a Cortina. More like the one the Sweeney used to have.

What’s the car in front of the Ford? Looks like a SImca 1100…?

    (I’ll get me anorak)

Like this photo a lot as there is so much going on. It would be great if someone could accurately date it as the car-dating technique is not reliable as loads of Dubs drove old cars in the 70s and 80s. The market stall is devoid of toilet rolls – which appeared in the mid 1980s. So it’s pre NCAD and pre le Roll but post Mk III Cortina.
