Talk Talk’s third album, The Colour of Spring, not alone presaged the brilliance of their later career, but also lent its title to the opening track of singer Mark Hollis’s only solo album.

It’s eight lines – intimate and rich – backed with piano and haunting, brittle vocals is a masterpiece of spare, pastoral beauty.

“Forget our fate”, the peddler sings.
Set up to sell my soul,
I’ve lived a life for wealth to bring.
      And yet I’ll gaze [at]
      The colour of spring,
      Immerse in that one moment,
      Left in love with everything,
Soar the bridges that I burnt before,
      One song among us all.

I was disappointed to find that this does not include the other John Waters.
      No, the other one.

Here comes the sun by the Beatles.
It’s what you hum on tit Monday, which mercifully can’t be too far away..

I do not remember the show, but when worked overseas there was a tv show (one of few in English) that used that as a theme song. Being starved of speaking in a language I could think in, when that came on the radio I had an almost Pavlovian response :)

John Martyn – Go Down Easy – (Solid Air)
Curl around me like a fern in spring…..
All I can say is , what an image…. oh my love
I know people judge the man – fair enough
But could he pen a tune?

The Doors -Waiting for the sun-

“Can you feel it, now that spring has come?”
What can I say? Epic song. Epic reef. Epic singing….A Masterpiece.

  4. Rosette of Sirius

Some great songs mentioned but mine has to be The Rain Song by Led Zeppelin on Houses of the Holy. One of my favourite Zep tracks too. I love the folksy ballad like feel to the start of the song that builds with intensity as Plant’s pitch and volume increases as does Page’s orchestral. melody.

‘It is the springtime of my loving
The second season I am to know
You are the sunlight in my growing
So little warmth I’ve felt before
It isn’t hard to feel me glowing
I watched the fire that grew so low, oh’

It’s a gorgeous and powerful song.

When I think of Spring, my mind turns to Tom Lehrer’s song about the delightful pastimes that Spring affords us all. This makes me smile every time I hear it. Supplies of peanuts and cya – nide have been laid in for the coming season. Broadsheet face-time in Stephens Green this weekend anyone?

I’m sad that he gave up performing back in the 70’s, claiming that satire was dead once Henry Kissinger was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1973. On the other hand, he is still alive (aged 91), so there is still hope that he’ll do a retirement World Tour in the near future. I’ll be at the front of the line for tickets.

….I don’t have a pick but I just spent the last two hours listening to…

    Blossom Dearie, Nine Simone, Ella Fitzgerald and others on various versions of Spring is Here; It might As Well Be Spring; Spring, Spring, Spring;
    as well as…
    Donna Summer, Spring Affair;
Tom Waits You Can Never Hold Back Spring….

And a few others… less said about them the better… including Yes, and the great but depressing Rammstein’s Spring…

I still haven’t a pick, but enjoyed the time :)
