They don’t have the candidates to sweep and mop up the transfers

          Look at Clare for example
          4 seats
          3 eFFers
          3 Blueshirts
a single Shinner who barely got 400 votes in the locals

And no matter how well Mary Lou does she isn’t going to get Violet-Anne a bump of 10,000 votes

Bums on seats is what’ll count this day week

Not how many polltoppers or leadership + or – ticks they’re sitting on

          1. ReproBertie

If the poll numbers hold up they’ll have close to 20 TDs. FF will be the biggest party with around 40 and FG will limp home around 34 or 35 so FFG may not have the numbers between them for another coalition and will have to look to the Greens or the Independents. It’ll be a very precarious government and the Greens might be better off staying out and waiting for another election later this year.

Very true V, why she isn’t running with another SF candidate in Dublin Central is beyond me, maybe they’re waiting for Christy Burke to retire. There’s surely potential in Dublin SW for 2 candidates too.

          3. V

If they were serious and had proper Management over the Cumanns and Comhairles around the Country, the Sinners would be running at least 2 in every constituency
Particularity in the Urban South and North Centrals

They have the resources but not the discipline locally to have a controlled National – Party First – Campaign

I can use my own constituency here in DSC as an expample
Back in GE16 they ran a quality second candidate with Snoddy, local school teacher Márie Devine
But Snoody wasn’t a bit happy about it nor were his Ballyfermot pals

I won’t go into too much details but when Márie’s posters went missing off the poles only to be re-erected AFTER the election and exposing her to fines, the culprits weren’t all that many cartridges away

Point is, Máire was solid enough and IMO Ministerial standard, and with a joint agreement between both to secure two seats for Sinn Fein there was every possibility of that here in DSC.

And we’ll see more of that over the weekend

And the reality is that FF and FG won’t have that carry on – and demand candidates behave and in the best interest of the Whip Counts

Wherever there’s a transfer available they’re chasing it.
And you can’t blame them in fairness

Sinn Fein can have no excuses for watching all those final counts over Monday and Tuesday next week put more FF and FG uselessness into seats
            Only themselves to blame

          4. V

And he wouldn’t be the only one
            In fairness

            Again
Sinn Fein only have themselves to blame when we see the final seat count next week

Like if you look to Louth last time out Gerry bend over backwards to bring in Imelda
And Pearse did the same in Donegal
            Both examples of Party first
So they know how the FF FG axis works and make it work for them

And therefore have no excuses not to convert their polls into seats and Dáil votes
            Only themselves to blame

    1. Cian

They only have forty something candidates. It’s almost like they don’t want to get into power.

      Like their MPs…

Like the MLAs in NI that did nothing for 3 years.

      1. ReproBertie

It’s almost as if people either don’t care or are fully aware of their long stated policy on the British Dáil and realise that the DUP were responsible for the absence of an Assembly in Northern Ireland. Or perhaps they are more concerned with not rewarding the coalition that have been in power while the children’s hospital costs skyrocketed along with the homeless figures.

The debate will be interesting. Mary Lou will be just waiting for the opportunity to point out how Leo and Mícheál are the same and ganging up on her. They’ll need be very impressive to pull a win out of her inclusion.

      2. GiggidyGoo

Scraping the barrel there Cian. No new blueshirt fraperoom ideas forthcoming at this stage, and FF having a mental block too.

      1. 01101101 01100011

that’s certainly is one of the things that makes me hesitate about voting for SF in a positive way…this obsession they seem to have about a reunification with NI
        BUT
it’s nothing in comparison with the bread and butter about how life in this country right now is…how can we be so rich and yet so poor at the same time? I’d like a shot at having a decent life here eventually and I’ll vote towards that!

I watched that interview yesterday eve and to me that Independent story looks a bit of an exaggeration! He’s a brutal interviewer (in a good way) I think she did ok.
I also watched the later debate on Primetime where Richard Bruton looked like a lost child to me and the FF guy was shouting a lot – I don’t see that in the paper anywhere?!

        1. GiggidyGoo

A very fair point ‘how can we be so rich and yet so poor at the same time’.
This is a 2016 profile of incomes. https://www.cso.ie/en/releasesandpublications/ep/p-gpii/geographicalprofilesofincomeinireland2016/incomeinireland/
When you look at it, the €1 to €60,000 bracket is the highest number of people.
Take the average rent as being €1405 per month. I did a calculation here yesterday, that a person on minimum wage of €21k, after paying an average rent, would have €6.50 or so left in their pocket to pay for food, transport, bins, ESB etc. per day. A person on €36k, married, would have an net income of approx €640 per week. More than half of that would go on average rent alone.

Interesting to see the Examiner reporting that the Cork Events Centre could come undone due to litigation.

FG’s and Coveney’s stunt to cough up more taxpayer monies for BAM was shameful.

    1. GiggidyGoo

It’s gas alright Otis. And the one leading the objection is a Fianna Fáil ex councillor in Killarney who gained himself a criminal record for trying to extend the ‘town centre’ to include his land – which would have made the area ideal for building apartments thus increasing the value. The same fellow had to resign from Bord Failte.
RTE by the way did a series about his hotel – six prime time programs no less – when they could have chosen any of 1000+ hotels in the country.

crikey not only have fg restored ff to power they’ve made the shinners electable! perhaps their hatred of the poor wasn’t such a good idea after all. The interesting thing will be who will call for leos head? if any of the front runners try they will scupper their own chances, it’ll have to be some willing patsy… Ms Noone, anyone?

  3. Charger Salmons

Up early to watch the outcome of the Iowa caucuses and what an absolute disaster for the Democrats.
Trump laughing his norks off in the White House.
The comparisons with the UK Labour party are all too familiar – same brewery and same piss-up they can’t run.
If they go for Bernie they’ll have the same incompetent and unelectable candidate too.
    New Hampshire will be interesting.

spring lambs, saw a daff yesterday, yes it just might be over the long dark winter !

By blowing a poll lead after calling an early election in pursuit of a Brexit dividend Theresa Varadkar has become the Leo May of Irish politics.

    1. 01101101 01100011

hm! that’s an interesting take on this…it’s almost like Varadker is trying to lose…maybe he knows there’s something very bad coming and he doesn’t want to be anywhere near? he would have very privvy inside knowledge, wouldn’t he?

  6. GiggidyGoo

ROFL – and they’re off, as predicted. The Indo headline a poor attempt. Must do better. Bring out Mairia Cahill tomorrow and Austin Stack on thursday. Atta boys.

  7. Murtles

The rise of Sinn Fein will hopefully do something to knock Varadker, Martin and their ilk off their high horses. I don’t think Sinn Fein has the experience to run the country but hopefully if they get into a coalition they can do something to stop the rot of the politicians gravy train, unvouched expenses for all and redirect funds to where they are needed. It pleases me to see Sinn Fein doing so well despite the government run media of RTE and Irish Indo doing everything in the power to topple them.
