The votes are in.
Last week, with a Golden Discs voucher worth a blooming €25 on offer, I asked for your favourite song about or mentioning Spring.
You entered in your dozens.
But there could be only one winner.
Third Place:
Poisoning Pigeons In The Park by Tom Lehrer
Glat1 writes:
When I think of Spring, my mind turns to Tom Lehrer’s song about the delightful pastimes that Spring affords us all. This makes me smile every time I hear it. I’m sad that he gave up performing back in the 70’s, claiming that satire was dead once Henry Kissinger was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1973. On the other hand, he is still alive (aged 91), so there is still hope that he’ll do a retirement World Tour in the near future. I’ll be at the front of the line for tickets…
Runner up:
The Rain Song By Led Zeppelin
Rosette of Sirius writes:
I love the folksy ballad like feel to the start of the song that builds with intensity as Plant’s pitch and volume increases as does Page’s orchestral melody. A gorgeous and powerful song.
Winner:
Go Down Easy by John Martyn
Eamonn writes:
‘Curl around me like a fern in spring…..’
All I can say is , what an image…. oh my love. I know people judge the man – fair enough. But could he pen a tune?
Nick says: Thanks all.

Fair play
As an aside, I can’t stand Led Zeppelin.
Love em. I hate Rush, though.
I enjoy a lot of their songs, but would not claim to be a fan.
They got in a lot of trouble over that picture, though.
I once had the pleasure of hearing John Martyn live, and he sang that. Beautiful tune!
He was brilliant. Worthy winner. I knew nothing about his personal troubles when I first binged on ‘Grace and Danger’. Goes to show (much like Fleetwood Mac and so many others) how pain creates amazing music.
P.S. A compilation of all Broadsheet / Golden Discs finalists needed.
Gotta agree. Love JM. Solid Air a masterpiece. Amazing guitarist too.
That has made my day,thanks.
Not used to hearing it without the odd hiss and crackle.
