      Anyway back to European matters.
Remember 11pm on January 31st and Blighty finally leaving the EU ?
The SNP’s Nicola Sturgeon tweeted a picture from the EU Commission building in Brussels which was showing its support for the poor wee Scottish.
      https://twitter.com/nicolasturgeon/status/1223369787260260354
Only it turned out to be no such thing. It was a stunt thought up and paid for by the SNP.
The European Commission has within the last hour reported the SNP’s Brexit Day Scotland/Europe loveheart projection onto the Berlaymont building in Brussels to the Belgian police because the Commission did not authorise it.
Which is all a bit awks for Wee Jimmy Crankie who is Brussels today on a charm offensive.
Questions at her press conference should be interesting.

    Well you’ve done it lads.
    You’ve opened Pandora’s Box.
And you’ll never get it shut again.
There’s a small group of publically retired terrorists meeting somewhere in a pub in Belfast tonight raising a glass or three and hardly able to believe their luck.
People who have literally got away with murder will soon have a hand on the levers of power in this country.
And they’ve done it by stealth, cunning and guile.
You have admire their chutzpah – they’ve suckered an entire generation under the age of 30.
    Enjoy the ride lads.
You have no idea what you’ve unleashed.

      Sinn Féin 44 Parnell Square Dublin 1, Ireland. Tel: (353) 1 8726100/8726932
I would not doubt that the operator, should you decide to phone Sinn Féin would put you through to the appropriate person to deal with you.

    2. scottser

      They’re coming for you, charger.
First they’ll take your rental income.
Then they’ll flood the place with immigrants.
Finally they will kneecap anyone with a grammar fetish.
      Be warned..

      1. Shayna

No-one is coming for anyone. If Charger has a thing about Sinn Féin – I supplied the number etc. I know Michelle O’Neill, as a neighbour – I’ll call off the hit on charger (By the way that was a terrible joke).

        1. Shayna

So sorry Charger, as abhorrent as your comments may be – you should feel no fear from Sinn Féin. Tá múid le chéile (We’re together). Also I just made that up as a slogan for SF. You heard it on BS first.

    In defence of antifa

Members of the clergy credit antifascist activists with saving lives in Charlottesville, Virginia, where white supremacist violence resulted in the murder of an anti-racist protester named Heather Heyer and injuries to dozens more. Yet even after Charlottesville, politicians and pundits quickly shifted from condemning the white supremacists who murdered Heyer to condemning the tactics used by those on both sides, as if the activists who pushed back against violent neo-Nazis were just as dangerous and menacing as violent neo-Nazis

    1. dav

not surprising given the alt-right campaigns against antifa, they want antifa banned to give them a clear run at their fascist agenda.

      1. Golden Balls

Even many reasonable people are totally brainwashed by that stuff Dav, while turning a blind eye to imperialist and other state fascism carried out in their name

  3. Gabby

The Financial Times seems to be the only British paper to put the Sinn Fein surge + Mary Lou on its front page. Daily Star is true to form with sex.

    1. Charger Salmons

Probably because the newspapers know their readers and their readers don’t give a toss about Ireland.
I know it’s hard for you to understand but they seriously don’t.
Unless it’s news about Mrs Brown’s Boys.

claims to live in Galway, what kind of Englishman would pick Galway of all places to live…BS

          1. italia'90

Nah, the voices in Charger’s head
            Remember his aIter-ego David?
The Jewish pub IandIord from UnionhaII West Cork??
At Ieast that character was a semi-consistent Moron!

          2. Charger Salmons

A Jewish pub landlord from Union Hall ?
            ” A pint of Guinness ? That’ll be €5.10. At that price I’m giving it away ! ”
Oi vey, I have to meet him. We could have such fun chortling at the Gentiles.

  4. Fearganainm

You’d think that Lisa Chambers of all people would have sorted out getting people to vote for her.

  5. topsy

Finally the people have said no to generations of political criminality and corruption. Well done Ireland.

    1. Rob_G

Not sure if this is completely daft, or a rather clever joke; you do know that members of the SF front bench have been in prison, right?

        1. Rob_G

          Pat Fupptard

          – hey I didn’t think that I could lower myself to your level, but I must say it was actually rather bracing.

    1. ReproBertie

1% ranked Sasamach as their main reason for voting the way they did. I know it hurts for you to admit it but it’s not always about you.

      1. Charger Salmons

I wasn’t standing in this election O’Bertie-Begorrah but Leo the Loser was and it proved his Brexit promenading was a huge error of judgement.
He fiddled while Rome burned with fury over healthcare, housing and childcare.
Boris on the other hand saw the bigger picture and stood for election promising not only to get Brexit done but a radical social and political agenda.
One has an 80-seat majority. The other simply looks like an idiot.
A united Ireland here we come. And all the better for it.
Politics,eh ? Stuff comes at you really fast.
        Huzzah x 3.

        1. ReproBertie

          “fury over healthcare,housing and childcare.”
Not immigration? I guess Peter “people’s real concerns” case was even more out of touch.

It’s a pity the numbers will make forming a government next to impossible because I’d love to see Britain’s teaboy Taoiseach’s face when he has to sit down with Mary Lou to discuss Britain’s lack of progress on the customs checks.

  6. Golden Balls

Fair play to broadsheet’s own Anne Marie McNally and Gary Gannon on their electoral performances

    1. Clampers Outside

Did Gary get elected… had a look at his twitter, and there’s no “woohoo” from him….

or is you havin’ a sarc?

      1. ReproBertie

Gary is currently in 4th after the 5th count. With less than 300 votes separating them it’ll be a real battle between himself Mary Fitzpatrick (FF) and Christy Burke (Ind) for the 5th seat.

    2. 01101101 01100011

      SD?
brilliant, my own vote counted very well, looks like 2x seats? The Greens too. Every bit as impressive as SF result!

I wouldn’t normally watch too much traditional tv and radio but I’m glued to it at present, so interesting to see and hear the post mortem – for me it’s like a big instrument panel, I see flashing reds all over the place. FF and FG tripping up over themselves aplenty and seem to me to be at the end of the day to be just eternally tone deaf, lads you need to try harder at the listening….Bloomberg telling everyone to sell their bonds :) the lid is off now and you can clearly see the mechanics…I’m patiently awaiting the EU take, all the irrelevant historical sniping etc to come in the week ahead.

I would appeal to everyone to stay cool.

My dad got into a row with my grandda last night after revealing he gave SF his #1…but he had a great comeback….while grandda (he’s FF) was all “but the country is going grand and look at all the jobs” my da was back with “yeah, but what good is it if we’re all miserable?” and reminded him about gran and a hospital experience last year and when we got into the realities grandda climbed down a good bit – it turns out there was a lot in the household he didn’t know because my dad didn’t want to be worrying him. And I’d say there’s loads of households out there where maybe for the first time the older generation are getting schooled on the realities going on today for their children and grandchildren and are maybe getting to hear some home truths.

this was a great result, couldn’t have been better imo….all sorts of nefarious moving parts we don’t normally see getting exposed, lots of wasters booted out (Zappone would be the cherry on top, let’s see) and most importantly a message to stop and turn the ship has been well and truly delivered. SF, SD and Greens can’t really affect anything on their own and if FFG get together and carry on with the same tack, game over for them. So change your ways or else, YOU WORK FOR US AND WE ARE WATCHING YOU ha!

      1. class wario

The thing is, there are probably loads of people like your grandad: probably doing ‘okay’ but even a few moments thought would bring to mind myriad things that they know are not right or acceptable in their own lives and the country as a whole because of the state it is in. it feels like the ‘boom’ and the subsequent crash has instilled this palpable fear of trying to aim higher into a few generations of people. the problem, for them and FG/FF, is that there’s a growing number of people left behind by this new normal. FG have now tried to campaign for 2 consecutive GEs with ‘ah sure you’re all miserable but look how astutely we’re managing that misery!’. it’s crazy and was always going to come back to bite them

      2. Janet, I ate my avatar

had a similar conversation with my Dad about the realities of moving back and living here, again didn’t feel the need to worry him before but he just gets fed the RTE crap usually and it’s doing him a diservice to not explain the realities to a certain extent.
Dublin more expensive that Paris and a much much lower quality of life..there’s something terribly wrong with that sentence.

      3. SB

        Two things come to mind
        1) The SF results so far are stunning, the lead they had from the start over FFG was astounding. However, with only 41 candidates running the chances of being in government aren’t huge
        2) The HSE is indeed a mess and I’d like to see SF or someone vocal from the previous opposition take over “Angola” to see how difficult it is – might change their tune then. However, can’t really do much worse than at present.

        1. ReproBertie

          1) 42 candidates and the most likely outcome is a FF/SF coalition but there’s a lot of horse trading to be done before we can be sure.

          1. scottser

not sure whether it’s just mouthing off, but there are lots of FF tds stating explicitly that they don’t want to share government with SF. there is a real danger of FF fracturing and defections if martin does a deal with SF to get the hot seat.

  7. Cú Chulainn

Dear god.. that exact same thing happened with my wife. Of course, I couldn’t admit what was in the cookie. She hangs out around the fridge a lot these days.
