Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Public Expenditure Barry Cowen TD
This afternoon.
“I don’t believe 22 per cent of the vote is a vote of confidence in our ability to govern.
I don’t believe losing a few seats is an indication of success. [Sinn Féin] need to take their ambition seriously now and ensure we get a government from the left.
Her and the left leaning parties should get together, form a government, find the €22 billion and off they go.”

Sounds a little bit “tantrumy” but he is not wrong either.
A left government seems to be working in Portugal. It’s entirely possible to run a country which is fairly taxed and run with efficiency.
It’s just Fianna Fáil don’t know how to.
lol
stfu ya Gombeen!
His fat guinness gozzling brother was one of the main architects of the current mess.
Why are you getting so combative and personal? He is literally conceding that FF don’t have a mandate to form a government, and suggesting SF do so.
he reckons FF getting 22% is not a mandate to govern but SF, by virtue of getting the same %, are obliged
right-ee-o
Well, SF have a lot more potential coalition partners; a lot of the smaller left political parties would find coalition with SF a better fit than FF.
FF can’t preach with their history of handling the economy!Plus as this article shows they get their maths wrong:’The phantom €2B:How everyone except Sinn Fein got the maths wrong”!
SF manifesto:€11B projected fiscal space+€3.8B re new tax measures+€4B from NAMA,
the €22B is the cumulative figure!
he reckons FF getting 22% is not a mandate to govern but SF, by virtue of getting the same %, are obliged
Actually SF got 24.5% of first preferences compared to 22.2% FF and 20.9% FG.
The “all three got 22%” was from the exit polls (which was bang-on correct for FF, with SF and FG being just outside the margin of error – albeit at different extremes).
Lol that’s a bit rich, Rob. Watch out for stones in your glass house.
ugh?
FF are projected to end up the largest party. Shouldnt he not be suggesting to the shinners that FF are willing to have a sit down instead of being a sore loser.
Its clear the establishment is not a happy camper today. I didnt vote for Sinn fein but im certainly enjoying the saltiness today.
Throwing the toys out of the pram.
Read between those lines.
Sounds like FF are really split on coalescing with SF. There is a faction that wants to sit in opposition and throw hurdles at them, another set of brown-nosers prodding Mehawl on the back and pushing him in for Taoiseach, at whatever cost.
Gosh I wonder whatever happened to that 14 billion Ireland was supposed to charge apple as Corporation Tax. Oh dear.
Maybe they could stop replacing promissory notes from the EU with more national debt.
Real rocket scientist stuff like that.
+1
The €14bn is in escrow.
That means that neither Ireland nor Apple can touch it until the EU court appeal is heard and a decision reached.
surely the appeal can be dropped by SF if they get into govt?
Yes. Ireland can drop it.
But Apple are appealing it too. And they have €14bn reasons not to drop it.
They’ll lose it and whatever Noonan fiddled them for 26% GDP fiasco aswell.
Sure we’ll see.
Whether they win or lose is irrelevant today.
Neither Ireland nor Apple can touch that €14bn until the EU court appeal is heard and a decision reached.
It’s relevant for the next budget, if a decision is reached.
Next budget is in 9 months.
I don’t think the court will be this year. And if Apple looses they can appeal again.
That money isn’t going anywhere for years.
HEAR HEAR.
Let her go off find the 22 billion and govern the big bloody looney lefty terrorist.
After all FFG have had a fair crack at it now but it’s just not good enough for you pesky voters always looking for the impossible and unattainable, like fairness and equality.
FFG are taking their ball and going home because you lot don’t know the rules.
That really is very magnanimous of Mr. Gigantic Bullyface.
The bully boys have got a kick in the stones and they don’t like it. Boo hoo.
The very best of luck to Sinn Fein.
Timmy, from Israel.
is Mr Cowen hiding this 22 billion in his jowls by any chance?
Does this even work when FF are projected to end up with more seats?
Still; that famous Cowan charm is almost irresistable. It’s a family trait that leaves them prone to more overtures than they can handle.
Rousing stuff.
And I took the road to Jackson town, me fortune to renew
I cursed all foreign money, no credit could I gain
Which filled me heart with longin’ for the Lakes of Pontchartain.
Sour grapes
