Speaking on RTÉ’s Six One, Mr Martin said forming a government would be difficult, adding that the view of his party was that there are “irreconcilable differences” between Fianna Fáil and Sinn Féin.

“I wouldn’t rule out another general election – this is going to be so difficult,” he said.

Limerick County TD Niall Collins told Reuters that the party was fully behind not going into government with Sinn Féin.

He also said a possible coalition with Fine Gael was not really discussed at the meeting, and added it may not be possible to form a government.

I wonder how long will FFG persist with the little charade before announcing that they’re willing to explore a coalition in the best interests of the country, need for stability, stepping up to the plate blahdefuppingblah

      Hi Brother
whatever length of time the vested interests they are rooted into give them to recalculate and reconverge…I imagine their highest priority is avoiding another election because if they enable that to happen in the current atmosphere it’s truly curtains for both of them

certainly this will not be the change the people voted for, the Greens would want to watch themselves

I have a feeling you might be pretty much bang on the money there.

It’s entirely feasible that Eamon Ryan has had his eye on minister for the environment for quite some time. He may just throw his party under the bus for good this time.

        1. yupyup

Could there be a lot of resistance to that among Green party membership or will Ryan be able to sell it? I’m not sure about the TDs that got elected but among some of the younger cohort?

If we end up with another FFG coalition, I’ll facking riot. More people dead on trolleys, more people dead in the street, more children eating on the street, more multinationals dodging taxes. More of the same is not what people voted for.

        1. Pat jones

Most got in by default, even their leaders Martin on the 6 thl. Leo on the 5 th that to me tells a lot. People will be on the streets if there’s a smell of ff fg

      1. yupyup

This is probably very naive of me. Perhaps it will be a slightly softer government than the last as FFG look over their shoulders at the groundswell of support for SF ?

      2. Margaret lyne

Daisy you are spot on ,get these useless gambeens out of office and give it to the people who will decide as before, so they understand..

  2. Dr.Fart

i thought MeHole Martin said he was a “democrat” and would indeed go in with SF. Best case scenario is that they make us vote again, SF run more candidates, and take full power. Any Gov. featuring FFFG will block SF making any real change. Eg. actually collecting 12.5% corporate tax, using that to build houses, fix HSE and so on. These are things FFFG have no intention on going near. Coveneys pathetic “we’ll build houses” is so false. They’ve been in power for 9 years, the proof is in the pudding, they’ve let an economic boom pass with the country not benefitting at all. Incapable of change.

    Oh dear lord!

Just listened to Mícheál on RTE. ‘I believe he people need a government that can radically change”

Right, So how are the parties that have dominated power for the last 40 years suddenly radically change?

Q: When will you talk to Leo Varadkar?
A: In the first instance we need to form a team

Jay sus! Whatever their other issues, SF already have that. FF are procrastinating, sounds radical, all right!

Key point is this: they have not learned anything!

    1. MaryLou's ArmaLite

They are just waiting for the dust to settle.

Labour, FF and FG have all said no to SF. We can see much clearer now.

      1. Pat Mustard

To lose again? Sounding more out of touch every single day. Gas..

Time for a stint in opposition.

        Gorge on your humble pie

        1. MaryLou's ArmaLite

How will SF form a government?

Solidarity, AAA, PBP, Rise can’t get to the end of a month without splitting into smaller groups.

          SF don’t have the numbers.

  4. Truth in the News

Fianna Fail and Fine Gael have gone into denial, if they can’t form a coalition with
around 74 seats between them and given the fact that they propped each other up for the
last 4 years, then the only solution is another election, the Fianna Fail election
slogan “An Ireland for all” rings rather hollow now., if FF and FG are not careful
they may end up with no parliamentary party at all

    1. Cian

I’m not sure if another election would fix things. SF would Hoover up a few more seats – but most likely at the expense of the other left parties/independents.

Even if we had SF with as many as 50 with FF and FG at 35 each it would still be an uphill struggle for SF to get another 30+.

      1. V

What if FF and FG went into another election with new leaders?

That’s one way to tempt back their core Voters

        I’m thinking Simon C
        And Michael McGrath

          1. thefatlad

I can also confirm from having done some work for them and meeting the man in person that he is an unconscionably silly billy

          2. V

            Perhaps

But he has 70% of the Blueshirts grassroots behind him
That’ll row in and get the vote out
And it’ll be a easy assertion to say a few more of the remaining Parliamentary Party now which is who voted for Leo

  5. :-Joe

Another 2020 election or another election cycle of F-f/g makes little difference as SF will get elected next time round either way.

Prolonging the inevitable just makes it more damaging for the F-f/g establishment status quo duopoly party. – Which is also a good outcome, depending on how you look at it and what side you’re on.

Ahssk.. me-hole “montgomery”joker”burns” martin a.k.a the greedy, dishonest corrupt, incompetant, slippery creep whose government crashed the economy into the earth’s core and robbed the public blind for decades…
…will not give up his only opportunity to be the new head-fixer for private global foreign corporate finance and it’s shareholders… all that easily.

It would be a huge blow to his ego and his already pathetic, embarrassing, shameful non-legacy, which, apart from a fat pension and a few kick-backs in retirement, is all that these avercial psychopaths really care about at the end of the day.

Just be calm, patient and prepared to seize on the next opportunity to vote them further out of power and diminish them into officially, the one party that they already are. The averice party.

Ireland’s version of the ‘murican DeRp Democratic / Republican duopoly / oligarchy illusion of democracy system.

F-f are the equivalent of the Republicans only not quite as overtly and obviously extreme.

F-g are the equivalent of the Democrats but don’t let that fool you, just as it is in ‘murica, they are both as bad as each other being backed by the same wealth and power and serving the same interests. Always the same.

  6. GiggidyGoo

Does FF have no shame- putting up a description themselves as The Republican Party yet supporting FG DUP UDA.
FF and FG described as the civil war parties. And both originally SF.
Theres a split coming in FF. Make no mistake

  7. Howya

I have insider knowledge that Fine Gael are just calling Fianna fails bluff and actually have a pre-arrangement to go in to government with Sinn Fein…..in the ‘national interest’.

  8. dav

It would be interesting to see what another election would bring in terms of overall turnout, sf would field more candidates but I’m sure ff will be doing everything to get their voting base out to the ballot box.

    1. Cian

Just wait. I’m guessing there will be another vote this year.

All parties will change their strategies.
      – SF will field more candidates; they’ll get more seats (but at a risk of splitting their vote).
      – FF and FG will field fewer: they split their vote in a number of constituencies and lost out.

  9. Blonto

If a govt is formed now without SF, it will be a rejection of the electorate. I’m not aligned with any party, but the rise of SF has to mean they are included.
FFG going into coalition (which we had for the last 4 years) would be a farce.
“We know people voted for change. We will change. We will deliver what people want”. No they won’t.
SF could end up being a failure in govt. But they might not.
We know for certain that FFG have definitely been failures in govt for a long, long time (since the failure of the boom years to advance all sections of society).

    1. Just saying

But what about the majority of the country that didn’t vote for the shinners, they got a rise in the number of seats don’t get me wrong, but perhaps it’s being a little forgotten that everyone else is not necessarily ok with them for whatever reason that would be. From speaking to people who voted smaller parties this time round (non shinners) if there’s another election they’re going FF or FG, so in the same way SF would take from PBP etc I think FF & FB could take from Greens, SD etc. (not saying either way on voting just something I don’t really see mentioned)
