The State would need about 16 jet fighters with three crews each to implement a full air defence capability

Some people think that we should get
The Air Corps a shiny new jet
But alas that would mean
We’d soon need fifteen
More, and that’s not a cheap bet

Pff what a puff piece. “Wah wah they are underpaying us” So leave then. Oh whats that, you dont want to leave because maybe the pay isn’t so bad and no where in the private sector will pay you more based on your lack of qualifications…Or maybe youre just in it so you can retire before everyone else except the Gards, and get a massive pension to boot!

The equipment is unused because we are overpaying the entirety of our public sector – ALL 400,000 of them! And so we are unable to afford to run the service because we pay too much for the service members themselves. Top brass dont have to do much so why are there so many of them? Ah yes because its a job for life and unlike the rest of the economy the Public Sector refuses to trim the fat.

We’re an island. We do need to patrol our seas, and as the article pretty much says, a reconnaissance plane is needed for such, and not 16 jets.
We also need sea patrol for same.

Of course, we also need as you say, a properly funded police.

Ireland should buy 16 second-hand Northrop F-5E Celtic Tiger fighter planes before the wheels come off.

A good article. But I would expect such from a man who knew what he was talking about, as the Maj Gen obviously does.

I remember years ago (mid 90s I think) seeing an article where someone had come up with a carbon fibre single seater jet that could be matched with a cannon (such as the Vulcan cannon) but would be possible for under 200k pounds. Someone suggested that the Air Corps consider these for intercept, and at the time a similar argument was put up as in this article: how many were needed, and also, why? Our operational needs are not there.

I have not been able to find either the article, or anything on the fighters suggested, but also my memory may be failing me :)
