Then Maybe You Shouldn’t Be Living Here

This afternoon.

A new set of stamps celebrating the Irish Abroad designed by Dublin-based ZeroG is now available.

Via An Post:

Three of the stamps feature common themes of emigration: a photo of people gathering in ‘The Galtymore Dancehall’ in Cricklewood, London showing the importance of Irish Centres and Irish hubs to the emigrant community.

An image of suitcases at Dublin Airport (1969) capturing the common experience of people leaving Ireland.

A detail from the painting ‘Emigrants letter and envelope, 1988’ by Geraldine O’Reilly representing communication with home and the importance of staying in touch.

Two other ‘N’ stamps feature a gallery of Irish people who have made an impact on the world from the 1800s right up to the present, each of whom has emigrated and made a contribution in their own sphere of excellence: Dame Kathleen Lonsdale (Scientist), Richard Harris (Actor) and Patrick Sarsfield Gilmore (Musician) and Edna O’Brien (Author), Fr. Michael J Kelly (Priest/Aid Worker) and Mary Elmes (Humanitarian) featuring on another stamp.

Almost half a million Irish people emigrated since 2008.

To be replaced by fodder for transnational capital and the direct provision scam.

      Great indeed.

ZeroG get away with murder, design-wise. They haven’t produced something truly beautiful in a solid decade or more. Just dining out on their reputation at this stage, with no effort into design, and it really shows.

Big time. What is the story with the colouring and gradiation on the head shots? That does not look intentional. It looks like somebody was lazy and didn’t balance them out. Ffs

it seems like a lot of their shtick the last while is to keep in lazy, bad looking design, and i reckon the thinking is “we are so far ahead of everyone that we don’t have to do basics that everyone else does. it’s beneath us” .. well theyre getting passed out and theyre too arrogant to ackhowledge that. they only get hired for state jobs these days, the only body who still thinks theyre “cool designers”

Every time there is a pic of the Galtee there
    Or the National (Kilburn)
I see a relative(s) and or family friends

I don’t enjoy those pics anymore tho’

I lived on Cricklewood Broadway for near five years. Long story but I had a three bedroom all to myself for forty pounds a week- bills included. As a young gay man I avoided The Galtymore and Biddy Muliagns in Kilburn like the plague- that was what I ran from.

From now reports, Cricklewood is almost a Muslim ghetto so the more things change- the more they stay the same.

Massive Attack played the Galtymore in ’94. Epic gig, even more surreal with the Daniel O’Donnell and Philomena Begley posters on the walls.

Massive Attack haven’t released an album in 10 years, whereas Daniel O’Donnell? – still releasing new material AND braving Corona to play on cruise ships AND dancing with the stars AND he singlehandedly reinvented the the ‘celebrities staying in rural B&B’ format – so who had the last laugh, you tell me, hmmmmm?

Was going to send these to an ex-pat friend in Peckham until I realised what a truly ghastly set of stamps it is.
