“Johnson in a Brexit Baby Boom” – really? I was manufactured in 1966, I sincerely doubt my parents (both RIP) were thinking about The (Soccer) World Cup at the time.

Health officials ‘appeal for calm” over the Coronavirus reaching out shores. might I suggest that the shifty-eyed HSE representatives (you can see the hiding of lies just by looking at their facial movements) are doing more to stoke up fear by not being forthright and honest with us?

    1. ReproBertie

Ah come on, seriously, what evidence do you have that they are not being honest with us?

      1. GiggidyGoo

        From the HSE website
“There is a confirmed case of coronavirus in the Republic of Ireland. They are receiving treatment in hospital. Infection prevention measures are in place.”

There ‘is’ ‘a’ …… ‘they’ are receiving treatment. “A” is singular. “They” is plural.
The HSE website gives advice such as if you’ve been in contact with a person that has the virus, in the last 14 days, then get tested. So how do people know if they’ve been in contact?

        also
“Because it’s a new illness, we do not know how easily the virus spreads from person to person. We do not know if someone can spread the virus before they show symptoms.”

Yet they go on to say that it’s spread by
        “face-to-face contact
spending more than 15 minutes within 2 metres of an infected person (see above – “we do not know how easily the virus spreads from person to person. We do not know if someone can spread the virus before they show symptoms.”)
Living in the same house as an infected person”

        1. ReproBertie

“They” is a neutral pronoun used to protect the identity of the patient. The NI case was referred to as “they” until their gender got out.

We do not know if it can be spread without symptoms but there is zero evidence that it has spread without the carrier being symptomatic. The only suspected case, a 20 year old woman in China, is being treated as an anomaly due to the lack of concrete evidence.

They are, by saying that they don’t know, being honest with us. All the evidence points to the need for a patient to be symptomatic to be contagious which is why they talk about the 2m, 15 minute face to face contact thing.

          You have semantics, not evidence.

          1. Charger Salmons

Why are you even taking seriously anything that fruit loop writes ?
All governments, including the Irish, are trying to balance their message between advice such as handwashing etc and not creating panic while dealing with a new virus whose likely spread, treatment and prevention is still unknown.
Inevitably at times like this the tinfoil hat brigade come out in force.
            Nigel will be along soon.

          2. GiggidyGoo

The HSE say definitively it’s spread by face-to-face contact, spending more than 15 minutes with an infected person within 2m.
The HSE then say ‘ we do not know how easily the virus spreads person to person’
Despite your attempt to suggest to the contrary, those two statements are conflicting.

          3. ReproBertie

The two statements are not mutually exclusive. We know it spreads like this but we do not know how easily.

          4. ReproBertie

Charger there are elements in the media and on social media who seem to exist purely to sow panic and fear based on disinformation, suggestion and simple lies. I believe this disinformation should be tackled and addressed.

          5. GiggidyGoo

Once they go into specifics, such as times periods, measurements, then your argument doesn’t stand up Repro.

          6. ReproBertie

That’s simply not true. It’s a guide to help people identify if the symptoms they are showing may be Covid-19 or not.

It’s not a definitive list of rules on how Covid-19 is spread.

Is this your only evidence that the HSE is not being truthful?

          7. GiggidyGoo

Whether it’s a guide or not, once they mention any specifics, your argument doesn’t stand up.

    Imagine if this was me

Running for election – Seanad now say

        1. Brother Barnabas

ah frillz, come off it – nothing more to it than making a joke out of fact that your comment came without context

          1. V

            You needed context?

            Let’s see

            – Politician/ Candidate with
            – 6th child on the way
            – Second marriage (to third baby mammy) on the way
From what we know – so far anyway

            Seriously?
            You needed context?

Just how deep does it go B?

I didn’t call him that Lush

          Badly or not,
          My point was obvious
About inherent behaviour and a lad’s true nature, their natural instinct
That only comes truly to light with reactions that that

Bet ye’re all even more glad t’was dumped now

So the Mail on Sunday have a picture of Boris Johnson on their front page. Makes a change from Megan, Harry or Kate! Any chance of them putting something Irish rather than English! I guess the “unmissable advice” they talk about at the top is also just a copy of their English paper. Can they not use Irish people and support our own? Their paper is getting more and more like the Sunday Express! You would think we are in the middle of England going by the paper they produce.

    1. GiggidyGoo

They do that as their sales are to knops like Charger one to live here rather than their homeland.

      1. Charger Salmons

It’s the boneheads who say they never read the hated Daily Mail/Mail on Sunday then spend their time on here complaining because they don’t use enough Irish news which makes Broadsheet so enjoyable.
I’m guessing they only look at the pictures anyway so their lips don’t have to move to read the words.

        1. GiggidyGoo

Face it Charger, their sales are so low, it points to their Irish market being Brits who have settled in Ireland because they can’t stand the notion of living in England, but still need their fix of little englander drivel. Hence the reliance on Boris, Liz, Harry, to sell to yiz.

          1. Charger Salmons

What newspapers do the hundreds of thousands of Irish people who have moved to the UK read ?

          2. Lush

I look at the Mail Online every day.
            It’s like a car-crash.
Intriguing and mind-numbing in equal measure.
And, despite your posturing, I reckon most of you regulars, feel the same.
            Charger, don’t ever change.

          3. Charger Salmons

No fear of that Lush my old chum.
It’s the snivelling ” this is a local shop for local people ” knuckleheads on here who I most enjoy schooling.

        2. Fiona

Actually Charger Salmonds, I read the IMOS for quite a few years, not just the pictures!
You clearly don’t get my point. They have so little Irish stories these days. That is my point.
And how they can charge €3.20?
A few years ago a lot of people were buying it.
Why are so few buying it now compared to then Charger Salmonds?

          1. millie vanilly strikes again

Oh no, I do. It’s such fun.

He reminds me of my old uncle Gerry who loves to dish it out but can’t quite bring himself to take it.

          2. Lush

Ah Mills, I think he takes it rather well.
I remain convinced as to his real motivations, but there’s never a dull moment.

          3. millie vanilly strikes again

I am never bored reading his comments. Never. And there is no higher compliment I can give. He is terribly entertaining.

    2. Fiona

They use to be a good Sunday paper up to about 2 years ago.
Then something happened and I switched to the Sunday Independent.
I noticed also how they put so many Royal stories into their paper. Clearly some Irish people like that but I’m not one of them.
They seem to have completely lost their Irish customers. When I stopped getting it so much just appeared the same as you would get if you were buying the Mail on Sunday in the UK.
They also are very expensive €3.20 is a lot.

      1. Matt Pilates

        Indeed.

The “some Irish people” would be the over-65s FF/FG boomer brigade who have always looked to the Brits for validation in return for their monied forelock-tugging obsequience.

  5. GiggidyGoo

Will Preti Polly last a week?
Will Boris keep his promise to marry?
Will the Mail keep us up to date?

  6. Matt Pilates

Good ole Boris Johnson ass over elbow again. You’re supposed to get married BEFORE the police are called to a domestic.

  7. Charger Salmons

Interesting data coming out of South Carolina and Biden’s win in the Democratic primary.
The Liberal-Left media have been saying to black Americans you need Bernie Sanders whereas they have responded with a thumbs down and gone for Uncle Joe.
It’ll be interesting in November to see how many blacks vote for Trump given their record numbers in employment – that’s if they still have a job after coronavirus.
Super Tuesday next week will also be fascinating – Alabama, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Democrats Abroad, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, and Virginia all hold their presidential primaries.

        1. GiggidyGoo

Whats there to “understand” about the alphabet? Maybe it’s a subject in the GCSE’s? Maybe you passed and portray such gained knowelegde as enlightening?

Uk’s first Muslim pride in London- Saturday April 11.

Well this is an interesting one, cheered on by the Daily Mail no less. It’s coming with the hashtag Islamophobia won’t stop us but in this context it is not Islamophobia which the problem – it is homophobia. In the last poll commissioned by Channel 4, 52% of Muslims believe that homosexuality should be illegal and 47% said gays should not be teachers- 23% want Sharia law in Britain too.

Still, it is a historic event and has been warmly welcomed by other LGBT groups. It kind of brings me back to our own first Prides and hopefully there will be a big turnout- good for them.

    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-8000667/UKs-Muslim-Pride-festival-held-London-year.html

    1. some old queen

Here is the deal lads- gay Muslims marching in London will require extra security. I pray that it is not needed but if it is- are you really going to come onto broadsheet.ie and compare it to poo that happened in Ireland 50 years ago?

This really is brave and stunning.

      1. Lobster

Every day I see you coming on here, complaining about Muslim homophobia. I totally support gay rights, however I also have Muslim friends and colleagues. I see the treatment they get in airports compared to me, I hear the comments against them criticising their presumed conservatism, or the comments about how they are not really irish, or the “jokes”. Discriminating against an already discriminated against group does nothing to support gay rights.
I’m sorry for jumping on you though, truth be told the only reason I want to challenge you is because 99.5% of your comments on here are insightful and or witty, so then when I see you engaging in speech which I know to be hurtful to people I care about, with no potential gain to the community you are trying to support, my reaction is a bit “no not soq”. Which isn’t fair of me really

        1. some old queen

Discriminating against an already discriminated against group does nothing to support gay rights.

Sorry but you have that one very much the wrong way around- from a gay perspective, Muslims are not the victims- they have a reputation for homophobia, this is hardly news. By your logic, if a black person objects to racists, they are the oppressor. And no, I do not tar all Muslims with the one brush- I am a big fan of moderate reformists like Maajid Nawaz for example.

But the fact remains, in the context or the up and coming Muslim pride, these people are putting their neck on the line because not only will there be an increased security risk on the day, they will potentially face a backlash from within their own communities- they are real Social Justice Warriors.

    2. Lobster

What do you think you accomplish coming online every day to rant about muslims? Particularly the half plus that aren’t homophobic?

      1. some old queen

A message of support for gay Muslims having the first gay pride IN THE WORLD is a rant?

Then again, if your bar is so low as to assume that everyone is gay friendly if they do not support the re-criminalisation of homosexuality- I very much doubt if you have much interest in the subject in the first place.

    1. Paulus

Canon Law has always amazed and amused me in equal measure:
A makey-up “law” specifically dreamt up to support the wishes of the R.C. church. And no; its long history doesn’t give it any more validity than if it came about yesterday.
In my schoodays, one priest-teacher had the letters D.D. after his name.
When my teenage curiosity asked what they stood for, I was surprised to learn- Doctor of Divinity!
      Even then I thought;
      “Oh…right so”.

    2. some old queen

As the more ‘experienced’ alter boy said to the priest- sure with balls like that I thought you were a canon?

        1. Paulus

Indeed; I remember her taking herself away to study it…in Rome?…sure what better place eh.

  9. 01101101 01100011

oops. looks like the authorities plan to treat us all like mushrooms is going spectacularly well…

    ¡Ay, Corona!

  10. Ron

The virus seems to affect people with underlying conditions. The Broadsheet commentariat should take extra precaution
