The Hardest Word

This afternoon.

Leinster House, Dublin 2

The mother and father of murdered Paul Quinn, Steven and Breege Quinn after attending the Dail today as TDs return to the chamber for the first time in two weeks.

In 2007, Mr Quinn (21) from Cullyhanna in south Armagh was beaten to death by a gang of around a dozen men in a farm shed on the border near Castleblayney, County Monaghan.

Mr and Mrs Quinn blame the IRA, but Sinn Féin has long denied republican involvement.

Mr Quinn’s mother, Breege Quinn, said she wanted Sinn Féin’s Finance Minister in Northern Ireland, Conor Murphy, “to say the simple words that Paul Quinn was not a criminal”.

At the time of the murder, Mr Murphy alleged that Mr Quinn was involved in criminality before he was killed.

Ms Quinn said she was not satisfied with what she termed “obscure apologies” to date, and alleged that “the slur’ that her son had been a criminal is being ‘actively promoted by Sinn Fein.’

Ms McDonald has also spoken to the Quinn family on the phone.

“He (Conor) has made an apology. It’s sincerely made and I hope and trust that the Quinn family will get some level of comfort from that,” Ms McDonald said last month.

that was hardly the occasion where Conor Murphy asked the IRA, did the IRA murder Paul Quinn and they said no?
how would you imagine such a conversation taking place?

      desperate stuff

I don’t socialise with terror bosses, so am not really sure what the etiquette would be in relation to asking them if it was them that gave the go-ahead to bludgeon a 21 year-old to death in a cow-shed, so your guess is as good as mine.

        1. D

I’d imagine it’s not a million miles from asking the Gardai how or if yet another person died in their custody and whether it was their fault or not. Or Charles J if he was running guns.

But if you can make a better guess, by all means

          1. Dr.Fart

calling whataboutery is rich coming from you, Rob. The most oft used weapon in your widdle poor armoury. A cornerstone of all FGer’s debate.

          2. D

Whatabout nothing. You live in a country founded by terrorists, run by terrorists and the sons and daughters of terrorists and your taxes pay for hired goons and their pensions.

You and FF are no better than SF or their politicians.

    2. scottser

you say this lad is ‘innocent’. so, a gang of active IRA men took some random young man into a shed and beat him to death to satisfy some sort of collective blood lust? sorry rob, that just doesn’t do it for me.
what is genuinely missing in all this is motive, to the extent that EVERYONE is holding back something, meaning NOTHING is believable in this case.
personally, i think the lad was up to something himself, got caught and informed to gardai about known IRA members. it’s the only circumstance i can think of that would lead to such a savage outcome.

      1. Rob_G

Robert McCartney was killed in exactly the manner you describe – he even had some elected SF politicians in attendance, who somehow “didn’t see anything” when the man was being murdered – was he smuggling fuel as well, do you reckon?

        1. scottser

Don’t know rob and I’m certainly not condoning his murder. But I would imagine that in a border region, informing on that sort of criminal comes with a gravitas that both of us could only speculate on.

          1. Rob_G

If you ‘don’t know’, why was your first impulse to blame the victim? It’s not as if the IRA don’t have form for arbitrary murder of innocents.

          2. scottser

i don’t know whether he was smuggling fuel rob, and neither do you. you should have the decency to admit you’re spitballing the same as everyone else.

        2. Rob_G

You could say the same about literally any other murder victim:

“I don’t know if Raonaid Murray was murdered for smuggling fuel or not, and neither do you – I had better post on the internet insinuating that she was, just to be on the safe side”.

    3. Ringsend Incinerator

Except he wasn’t innocent. The information he was involved came from…. the PSNI.

Sorry for your loss, but nobody gives a flying fupp about your son’s death except those temporarily ragin with the GE result.

And when that election outcome is finally settled, nobody will mention his name.

      1. Rob_G

        There you have it, folks.

You like to poop–a-doop on a lot about your supposed empathy with working class communities – what about all of the working class people murdered and terrorised by the IRA?

        1. D

          > what about all
you are just fooling yourself here at this point
          FF => IRA
          FG => IRA
          SF => IRA

they are all related, it’s only a question of how recently.

  1. Dr.Fart

cant imagine how horrible that was for the victim and now for the family, but to keep at SF over it is a bit misguided. The IRA haven’t been a force in 25 years, and have no connections with present SFers. This poor family are being used as a political weapon by FG to try discredit SF. Theyre depravity knows no bounds.

    1. Rob_G

You are so deluded that it would be funny, if it wasn’t so tragic.

James Curran, Paul Quinn, Robert McCartney… these are just a few people murdered, years and years post-ceasefire, by the brave patriots from SF/IRA

      1. GiggidyGoo

By not sharing your proof with the PSNI or the Gardai, you are complicit. Happy with that?

        1. Rob_G

Well, I only know what I read in the papers, I wasn’t there – unlike SF’s minister Deirdre Hargey, who was in a pub when a man was murdered by the IRA, yet “didn’t see anything”.

          1. GiggidyGoo

Well, there you go. You believe everything you read in the papers obviously. Good lad.

          2. Rob_G

Do you think that the murders of James Curran, Paul Quinn, and Robert McCartney are a some sort of a newspaper conspiracy?

Curran was murdered by a Sinn Féin member, who has previously been Aengus O’Snodaigh’s election agent – he was convicted when one man was brave enough to testify against him. Quinn, murdered by the IRA (they were more careful about witnesses this time). Robert McCartney was murdered in a pub full of people, including an elected member of SF – she does not deny being there.

Listen, you can go ahead and defend the indefensible if you like, but don’t try to pretend like I am making things up – everything I’ve said has been very well-documented. You could also stand to read news sources other than Broadsheet from time to time.

    2. Rob_G

I’ve only noticed this part now…

The IRA haven’t been a force in 25 years, and have no connections with present SFers.
      – yet more idiocy – a convicted IRA bomber was elected in Dublin this month; another convicted bomber was an SF MEP until a month ago. Seriously, try getting your news from somewhere other than Broadsheet occasionally, you may learn something about the world.

  2. GiggidyGoo

Mairia Cahill – used by FFG – dumped by FFG
Austin Stack – used by FFG – dumped by FFG
The Quinn family are the latest to be used.

Then Taoiseach Bertie Ahern said at the time that following a security briefing he was assured the murder was not sanctioned and “not paramilitary but pertained to feuds about criminality that were taking place”.

So that briefing was by who? the PSNI.? The gardai? One or the other.

    1. Rob_G

That’s some mental gymnastics to make out the FF or FG, by helping the victims and their families, are somehow worse than the SF/IRA – you know, the people who were the actual murderers/rapists of the above.

        1. Rob_G

‘Dumped them’ – dumped them where?

Unless the answer is: “in an unmarked grave on an isolated beach”, we are kind of talking about apples and oranges.

  3. Shitferbrains

At the time of the murder it was said that Paul had crossed the son of a provie from the Cross. Wheather or not it involved smuggling wasn’t said.

    1. Rob_G

I recall hearing that as well.

It’s almost as if there were a group of people in whose interest it is to besmirch the victim as much as possible…
