Minister for Health Simon Harris said said we must reduce our social contacts to help slow the spread of the virus.

Simon Coveney said the radical measures will be a lot for the Irish public to take in

We are asking Irish people to stay apart,” he said.

Earlier…

This morning.

Washington DC, USA.
.
In his address, Mr Varadkar said there will be “many more” cases of the coronavirus, “more people will get sick” and “more people will die”.

He said the virus is “all over the world” but it “can be slowed” and the impact can be “reduced” which would make things easier for our health service to “cope” and, in time, for scientists to create a vaccine.

The Taoiseach said it should be noted that the effects of the virus will be “mild” for the majority of the people but that elderly people, and people will chronic illnesses, are at “real risk”.

He said people in Ireland have a “duty” to protect others including grandparents, friends, neighbours and co-workers.

Mr Varadkar said “we” have not witnessed a pandemic of this kind before and it is “unchartered territory for us”.

He added: “We said we’d take the right actions at the right time.”

He then went on to say that, from 6pm this evening, until March 29, all schools, colleges, childcare facilties will close.

There may be some teaching facilities online, where possible, while all cultural instutisions will also close.

He said all indoor gatherings of more than 100 people should be cancelled; and outdoor gathering of more than 500 people should also be cancelled.

He said anyone who enters Ireland, who show symptoms of the virus, should self-isolate.

Mr Varadkar went on to encourage people to continue to go to work if they can but said break times should be staggered and meetings should be held remotely, if possible.

He said public transport will continue and shops will stay open. He said everything will be done to ensure the supply chains will not be disrupted.

He called for people to take a sensible, level-headed approach “during this difficult” time before adding that restaurants and cafés can stay open but asked that owners look at ways to facilitate “social distancing”.

He also called on people to reduce their social interactions as much as possible.

The Taoiseach also repeated the guidelines about hand washing and sneezing into one’s elbow.

He said healthcare workers have been at forefront since start of this crisis and said they’ll be at frontline in the time ahead. “We must do all we can to help them,” he said.

Mr Varadkar said he knows these measures are a “shock” and that they involve “big changes”. He said people are being asked to make “enormous sacrifices”. But, he said, “we’re doing it for each other”.

He said “together, we can slow the virus and push it back” and save many lives.

“Our economy will suffer but it will bounce back,” he said.

He said: “We need to look out for each other…Ireland is a great nation, we’re a great people…We’ve endured hardship before… and many trials in the past..with our determination…we will prevail.”

More as we get it.

Trump made three mistakes in his own scripted speech in which he caled it a ‘foreign virus,’ his VP, heading up the US response team, doesn’t think cigarettes cause cancer, Boris Johnson talked about letting the disease run its course through the population and taking it on the chin. Varadkar’s a mediocrity, but nowhere near the class of those dangerous clowns.

        1. ReproBertie

He absolutely did but he was taken out of context.

Boris Johnson: Well it’s a very, very important question, and that’s where a lot of the debate has been and one of the theories is, that perhaps you could take it on the chin, take it all in one go and allow the disease, as it were, to move through the population, without taking as many draconian measures. I think we need to strike a balance, I think it is very important, we’ve got a fantastic NHS, we will give them all the support that they need, we will make sure that they have all preparations, all the kit that they need for us to get through it. But I think it would be better if we take all the measures that we can now to stop the peak of the disease being as difficult for the NHS as it might be, I think there are things that we may be able to do.

          1. Clampers Outside

And he wasn’t saying that’s what they should do.

Clearly it is out of context, a Nigel speciality, in fairness. To be expected.

    2. dav

@Ff, now I wouldn’t consider myself to be leo’s biggest fan but I didn’t see any much evidence of idiocy there.

      1. Rob_G

        Fair play, dav.

It’s a good decision (though I think they should have already made it sooner).

      2. Dave

Two suggestions that don’t seem to be anywhere:
Disinfect your cellphone or earbuds regularly. You hold them next to your head.
Pay for taxis with a card or app. Those poor people can’t stay away from their customers so are the canaries in the coal mine. If/when the worst happens to the poor driver the HSE can get in touch with you. If we are still in the contain phase.

  1. Clampers Outside

But wait, no…. all the comments this morning said otherwise…. the silly willies.

    1. class wario

You were on here 2 days ago having a 24 hour meltdown about how everybody was overreacting lol

      1. Clampers Outside

No, I wasn’t, I was saying how I preferred considered decisions to reactive ones.
We now have a considered decision after consultations with employers, departments of education, transport, and of course health, among others.

        And fair dues to that!

        1. some old queen

Absolute Bullpoo- health experts have been calling for this for at least the past 6 days.

          1. Clampers Outside

What I said my position was is not bullpoo, that is as I said above exactly what my position was.

          2. some old queen

In times of public health emergencies- the health professionals rule supreme Clamps.

Our health is our wealth and what they say should be acted upon immediately- no ifs and no buts. And what is worse is that this procrastination came from a friggen medic himself.

        2. Dr.Fart

jesus clampers, you’re such a bootlicker. saying everyone’s an idiot for being wary of a global pandemic, then once our idiot leaders, weeks later, say yea actually it is something to be wary of, then you’re onboard. you can’t form an opinion until literally the worst leaders we’ve ever had tell you what to think.

          1. Clampers Outside

Where did I call everyone an idiot? I called hyperbolic nonsense commenters idiotic, like those who said it was “already too late”.

My opinion was as stated above. that a considered decision was what was needed, that is now done.

You’re just a big silly with all that nonsense you’ve spouted. Have a lie down, hell, have a lie-in before you hurt yourself going off on one, good lad.

          2. Dr.Fart

someone told me that you run about 4 of the names on here. pretending to be 4 different people. arguing with yourself n’all. i’d slag you about it, but its too heartbreakingly loserish and i feel a lil bad for you.

          3. Clampers Outside

A randomer on the Internet said something about a randomer on the Internet or a randomer said something about a randomer on the Internet… and you believed it.

Either or, well done you… heheheh :)

I only have one handle pet, and it’s clearly more than enough to get a rise out of you, but thanks, I’ll just stick with the one.

            “4” though hehehehehee… ain’t got time fo’ that! :0p’

        3. Treasa (one username only please)

You were, in between clutching your pearls and your shrill screaming about THE TRANS AGENDA! You are among the most dislikeable personalities I’ve ever come across. I probably speak for a lot of people in that.

          1. Janet, I ate my avatar

nah, clampers been here a long time, I don’t always agree with him but he’s genuine and one poster,
I have a feeling you are a reincarnation though..I may be wrong ..but prefer not to throw poo

          2. class wario

great endorsement from scundered, who only the other day was saying how every media outlet was ‘far left’ lol

          3. scundered

Class Wario, if you care to check your facts I said that the majority of our media is left wing, get your facts straight before spreading tripe about others

    1. GiggidyGoo

You’ve changed your tune Cian. You were accusing people of spreading panic here last week, when those people were flagging*, correctly, how this was going to go, and extolling the virtues of pulling back on various activities. But no – you and your comrades knew better.
Still though, there’s no change in the actions at airports – leaflets still. No testing. That’ll have to change.

      1. ReproBertie

You mean last week when we had fewer cases and the WHO hadn’t decided it was a global pandemic and the government was acting on the advice of experts rather than keyboard epidemiologists?

Testing at the airport won’t work (and why only the airport? Can the virus not travel by sea?) . It takes 36 hours to get results and we can currently only test about 500 per day. Using those tests on people presenting with symptoms is a better use of resources than testing every one arriving into Ireland.

        1. 01101101 01100011

          Incorrect

          https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-51836898

In South Korea they can carry it out end to end with a result available in 5-6 hours

They implemented their current system based on previous learned experiences. I read articles about that back in mid January. I’m quite sure your super smart authorities might have had the “intell” there themselves or maybe I’m the only one in Ireland who knows?

So why didn’t our authorities implement such a system? I could only guess that it was either:
          1) they don’t know their arse from their elbow
          2) MONEY

          1. ReproBertie

That’s great that South Korea can get results in 5-6 hours but that’s not the situation here where it currently takes between 24 and 36 hours to get the results and, while more labs are being brought into the testing process, we can currently test about 500 people per day.

          2. 01101101 01100011

so why can’t we follow their template?

            – are these South Korean medscience lads just extra supersmart compared to ours, we couldn’t possibly understand?
            – are we incapable, incompetent?
            – is it just that we care less?
            – did our Govt. take their eye off the ball? too busy electioneering and politicking perhaps to think for themselves?
            – or is it simply that they just didn’t want to spend the money and preferred the other route of let’s make no effort, make it an issue of personal responsibility only, hand out some some yellow leaflets they knocked up in Leinster House on the nice new printer, shure will be grand, will cost less than trying to stop its entry.

            why not?

why can’t we do testing just exactly like the South Koreans?

          3. ReproBertie

I don’t know. It could be facilities, it could be the chemicals required for the testing it could be that our labs are gearing up to do the same tests. Unless someone involved in the testing, or someone who understand the process, actually posts here you’re unlikely to get an answer but maybe dial back on the urge to shout nonsense like “is it just that we care less” until you know the facts.

          4. Clampers Outside

Why don’t you know the answers Repro? Why? Why? This is all your fault!… and we’re all going to die!

          5. ReproBertie

Speaking of facts, the 24-26 hours testing time is for home tests. It may be that the time is extended due to how long it takes to get the samples to what was the only lab in the country that was testing. Perhaps once the sample is in the lab the testing time is only a few hours but I don’t know and nor do you. I do know there isn’t a lab at every entry point to the country and I do know there isn’t the capacity to test everyone entering the country.

          6. 01101101 01100011

it’s a whole system + method ReproBertie, it already exists and wasn’t just arrived at last week, we could have copied it if we wanted to and I think questions need to be asked about things like this and the likes of the sickener that is the thousands of irresponsible hung over Cheltenham- goers who are gonna just float back into the country without any testing or critique whatsoever, hopefully they won’t harm anyone, on their conscience be it

lookit, you take the best care of you and yours, best wishes to ya etc.

          7. ReproBertie

“it already exists and wasn’t just arrived at last week, we could have copied it if we wanted to”

As I said, the 24-36 hours is for testing at home. It may be quicker when tested in hospitals but I can’t find that information anywhere. For all we know, we are using the exact same system as SK but with smaller capacity.

I’m with you on Cheltenham and the UK government should have stopped it. If it wasn’t safe for City and Arsenal to play then how is that safe?

          8. 01101101 01100011

it’s a highly efficient drive-thru style system outside the clinics
the punters stay in the car, hazmat lad tests them thru the window, barcode etc.
they go park up and wait while the samples are analyzed at same site
they either head off with a clean bill or are admitted to the clinic

in the overall scheme the test is part of an overall proactive approach they decided to take (as opposed to our more reactive ideas) – trace, test and treat

another question has just occurred to me –
(albeit late imho) now that we have adopted more the stringent “lockdown” what’s the story up in NI? are they carrying on willynilly like the mainland?

          9. ReproBertie

According to that link they go home and get a text 5-6 hours later but that’s a minor quibble.

Britain’s Taoiseach has said that the UK response will be UK wide and they’re still deciding what it will be so no shut down in Northern Ireland yet.

          10. Cian

South Korea has more than 10 times the number of people than Ireland and they are processing 20,000/day; that would be the equivalent on 2,000 in Ireland. If we are processing 500/day we’re not that far behind – it’s the same order of magnitude.

Yes we can do better…but we’re not doing as badly as people seem to suggest.

          11. 01101101 01100011

that’s a kinda tooty pants comment on your part Clampers if it was aimed at me and I have no idea why you feel the need to type that

I have plenty of robust discussion on here without it ever stooping in that direction and going there makes you sound a lot younger than I am

I may not have all the answers (like some on here seem to) but my questions are perfectly reasonable on point and relevant, it ain’t my fault if they scratch at things you’d rather not see and hear

its a pretty fupping serious issue or haven’t you heard?

ah whatever. disappointing. take care of you and yours.

        2. Clampers Outside

Enough of your sensible commentary already. I want to see more exasperation and feel the spittle on the keyboard in your next comment. We’re all going to die damn it!

          1. ReproBertie

I really should spray my spittle on everyone else’s keyboard to hasten us all dying.

        3. GiggidyGoo

Your ‘fewer cases’ doesn’t stand up Repro. We got forewarning of what was going to descend upon us (Italy), yet Cian and others poo pooed anyone who said that. Well. it’s come to pass due to a reactive, not proactive, ‘leadership’

      2. Cian

@GiggidyGoo Still though, there’s no change in the actions at airports – leaflets still. No testing. That’ll have to change.

mmm. we usually have 43,000 people arriving into Dublin airport each day. We can currently test 500.
(even South Korea, that is the gold standard, and has more than 10 times the number of people than Ireland and they are ‘only’ processing 20,000/day) – it just isn’t possible,

        1. GiggidyGoo

Total rot Cian. The cost of such proaction in prevention far outweighs the future costs.

          1. Rob_G

            @GG
If we only have that much testing capacity in Ireland at present and tried to ramp it up, what do you think would happen? Do you think that there is a load of spare COVID-testing infrastructure lying idle at the moment, waiting for an order to come in?

          2. GiggidyGoo

Cian. It.is.possible.to.test.that.many.people. All it takes is funding and staff. We have nurses graduating every year here that don’t have nursing jobs. Some are emigrating, but not all. Test kits are available – some even manufactured in ireland.
The only thing that makes it not.possible is the level of competence in the HSE and Government upper echelons – and of course their apologetic lackeys.

    2. Dr.Fart

cian. you are the most stone cold loser on here. and that’s sayin somethin. you’re unwavering faith in the worst leaders the country has ever had, is pathetic.

      1. A Person

Fart, you are the worst commentator on here. Its all the leaders fault…..but they are not leaders at all. They have no mandate etc., we won less than 25%, are the real leaders, but are currently silent.
Let’s make a medical crisis a political one, ffs. Why are you and Goo and Mustard essentially the same name? As for the makey up Treasa, who’s name you can’t even spell, give over.

        1. Dr.Fart

the ramblings of a lunatic. i read your “comment” twice and it made no sense. FFFG are the ones playing politics when the country has a medical emergency. they tried to form a gov. of just them, sayin its needed now coz of crisis. when theyve been thumb twiddling since the election. this “opportunity” came along, and they tried to use it to ham thru being in gov.

          1. A Person

There you go again. You cannot comment without FFG or blushirts (which you have yet to define or spell correctly). The country is in lock down, but it is all the fault of FFG. Where are your leaders? And seriously, can you not spell Treasa properly? As for forming a govt – go effing form one….., and lead. Nah, time of crisis, run for the ditch. Just like you did in the UK.

          2. GiggidyGoo

When you have people with the intellect of A Fellow coming out in support of the likes of Varadkar, Harris and Holohan, that gives you an insight into the problem this country faces.

      2. Andrew

Dr, Fart,You like using the word ‘loser’. It seems childish as in something a teenager would say. Your username is childish. Your comments really offer nothing on any topic. , are you very young or are you just very shallow with little real knowledge on anything?
Why do you think anyone is interested in what you have to say?

  2. RuilleBuille

    About time.

The clowns have been giving into commercial interests at the expense of our health.

    1. Cian

      “About time”?
We are among the first European countries to do this – Yes, Italy has done it a few days ago, but they have a major outbreak.

  3. 01101101 01100011

what are we doing with the 25,000-odd selfish people still on the batter over in Cheltenham?

    1. 01101101 01100011

there’s a clear cover-up going on in relation to Cheltenham

nobody wants to talk about it for some reason

no discussion about it at that press conference yet it’s something everyone is asking about, the biggest mass gathering of Irish people happening right now in the mixer with 50,000 brits and others along with clear documented cases of the virus in the locale, no questions nothing to see here but yeah some yellow leaflets

Irish Times website has Cheltenham live dialog box running alongside the Coronavirus live dialog

big fat dirty inconvenient secret happening live in your faces

      all grand

      all bullsht

      go team ireland

      LOL

Normally disease works it’s way up the class system but this time it is the other way around so- shhh.

      2. GiggidyGoo

Harris was asked that on the evening news just now. His answer? ‘We will give leaflets out’

  4. Eamonn O’Donoghue

Leo is an oaf surrounded by a posse of clowns, the HSE double act of Laurel and Hardy have been lying to us from the start. They all must go. And as for a shut down until March 29th…in the name of jeeey aaaaysus.

veggie racks the most full in the supermarket… tellingly

        1. Clampers Outside

Fruit and veg won’t keep, in fairness. I only ever buy if using within a day or two.

You’re correct Janet. I stupidly dropped into LIDL this morning only to get some glue sticks for a glue gun (sealing up the joint. ha haaaa), and it was mayhem. Guy there stocking up on spam and bars and bars of chocolate – that was all. Said that Tesco down the road had a queue going in the doors.
But the vegetable shelves were full. And funnily enough, a great meal can be made out vegetables.

          1. GiggidyGoo

Actually, Clampers, in my local Aldi they used to announce ‘we are closing till 3’ (or whatever number), and everyone would start rushing to the tills thinking the shop was actually closing.

    1. Lilly

Nourish has increased the price of a bottle of Vitamin C from €25 to €45. That’s one shop I won’t be visiting again when this is over.

      1. Clampers Outside

Who pays that kinda money, €25, for a common multivitamin anyway… they deserve to be ripped off even more :)

  5. Hansel

I wouldn’t be one to big-up Varadkar and his team, but they get my kudos for doing the right thing.
Cannot have been an easy decision and I hope they aren’t castigated for it.

We know of ONE workable solution to this virus.
It may be horrendous medicine, but I’m glad we’re trying it.

This is good advice in and of itself; but also it means that you are less likely to have cause to visit a cash machine and touch their manky, filthy touchscreens.

People will be at it like rabbits when they are, errr, holed-up, there’ll be several Christmas babies methinks!

  7. brughahaha

Are Leo and the cabinet , seeing as they used the word “solidarity” a lot , going to forgo their wages and expenses until March 29th to show “solidarity” with the thousands , if not hundreds of thousands of SME employees and owners who will be losing theirs

yep , thought not …easy to talk about hardship when those making the decisions are utterly unaffected by it

    1. Nigel

A pointless gesture that would be arguably patronising, making not one iota of difference to anyone hit hard by this financially when there are actual steps that could be taken.

      1. brughahaha

Far from it ..would give credibility to the idea they have thought this through. I repeat , easy to make decisions that effect other people but have no personal direct effect …and then shite on about “solidarity” and “sacrifice “

        1. Nigel

If it was easy they would have done it last week, and politicians have to make decisions that have no direct affect on them all the time without pointless empty gestures.

    2. Cian

Why should they – Leo and the cabinet going to be working round-the-clock until March 29th.

      1. A Person

But they only take the average industrial wage and do not send their kids to private schools. All their leaders houses are built on the average industrial wage (wanna see pics?). Their wealth is only inherited from private donors and the concept that this is not true is only a product of MSM. National crisis, where are they now – on the effing ditch.

important thing all the lads to remember is that abstaining from ejaculation gives your immune system a short term boost of around 30%

    #nofap

      1. Brother Barnabas

        no

i practice withheld ejaculation very regularly – only do it every 3 or 4 “sessions”

try it – has many benefits, not least making you kinder, more patient, more empathetic. you’ll notice a change in your character within days. and it also makes you a better, more giving lover

Does it make a difference if your boys aren’t what they used to be… as my wife said once… “your boys are either in a spasm swimming in circles, cock-eyed, or directionless, if they even have a limb to get off their a*** or even an extra one or two, to propel themselves at all” :0p’

But they are my boys, and I only needed one good ‘un :)

  9. Ringsend Incinerator

Shambolic stuff from Varadkar and Co, but especially Mr V – announcing this when on the other side of the Atlantic.

For a government obsessed with optics, it’s hard to see how more wrong they get this stuff.

If they couldn’t get re-elected them, then they surely wouldn’t now.

    1. Andrew

Why do you think it’s shambolic?
What difference does it make where he happens to be when the announcement is made or even who makes the announcement?
If you’re going to criticise, at least qualify it.

      1. Ringsend Incinerator

Not the brightest on optics from the leader of of the government, are you.. go out and buy some decaf.

  10. spud

My internet and whatapp has been very sporadic the past while since the announcement.
    Anyone else the same?
If Netflix and such streaming services go down just as kids and all are told to stay indoors… God help us all!!

    1. Ringsend Incinerator

WiFi is creaking. People working from home, online looking for info, etc… expect low speeds….

  11. Matt Pilates

Lads, would ye ever knock off the slagging and go out and see if anyone needs a hand shopping, collecting kids, etc?

    This poo is beyond boring.

Let’s be useful for once. If we have time for this sparring now,. we’s cannot have much to do.. We’ve got until March 29 to think of smart alec comments.

Perhaps BS can post/co-ord offers of help; childcare; dog walking; etc.,

(Gets balaclava and plans hand sanitizer job in local church)

    1. Shayna

What a lovely, altruistic thought Matt. I was approaching my local Tesco Metro on The Lisburn Road, Belfast earlier – when two young women – QUB students (they were wearing rowing team fleeces) were struggling with 2×9 packs of loo roll under each arm walking down the street. My immediate thought was not to come to their aid, but ponder if there was any loo roll left. It transpires, there was a plentiful supply.

      1. GiggidyGoo

I read elsewhere that Toilet Rolls are the new currency. S..tcoin they’re calling it.

  12. ReproBertie

Meanwhile in the UK, the British Taoiseach gave a press conference where he has declared that schools will remain open and sporting events will go ahead.

“The most dangerous period is not now, but some weeks away, depending how far it spreads.”

They are only “considering the question of banning major events, including sporting fixtures” not because of the spread of the virus, but because of the burden it puts on public services.

    1. ReproBertie

“It is clear that coronavirus continues and will continue to spread across the world and our country over the next few months,” adds Mr Johnson.
“We have done what can be done to contain disease, which has bought us valuable time.
“But it is now a global pandemic and the worst public health crisis for a generation.”
He adds: “I must level with you, the British public, more families will lose their loved ones before their time.”

    2. Clampers Outside

He can’t be doing that, WE are supposed to be the worst, and we’re all going to die because of it!

      1. ReproBertie

Maybe we’re the worst because he admits they’re going to die and we didn’t admit that?
