What a week!
In these “interesting” times, where would we be without music to offer an escape from the misery?
I’m inviting readers to post the song that instantly transports them to a happier place.
Here’s mine.
I’ve a glittering €25 Golden Discs voucher to offer to the winner, chosen by my pet goldfish.

Showing my age here. Only two bands’ records were allowed be played on my Dad’s stereo: ABBA and Vicky Leandros. To this day, I just love the upbeat tone of this one, and have occasionally sat in the car if it comes on the radio to finish it out.
Hey Joe McKenzie. I hope that you enjoy :)

Though to be honest, pretty much any ABBA song will do it too
because of the times we live in I will refrain from giving my opinion on ABBA and just be glad it makes YOU happy :)
I appreciate your forbearance :)
I do hope that you enjoy Vicky Leandros’ little ditty, though
:)

along with the pleasant vintage of a theatre show, it is camp and giddy, but there is manly elegance you just don’t see anymore, so beautiful it doesn’t need words, the silence of the movements speak for him

My entry today is “There She Goes” by the La’s. It’s a very simple melody and the lyrics even more so. Instantly catch but at the same time not at all cheesy. In it’s day is was supposedly about heroin. Some of the band since came out to say it wasn’t but, well, perhaps that’s all best left in the past.
Whatever it was about, to me it was a super sweet little love song. That’s the thing about happy moments, it’s all about a time and a place and how you felt. Zeitgeist, and for me that song evokes powerful memories from the early 90’s. I was in my early 20s, half decent job with a few bob in my pocked and my first serious relationship with a girl I dearly loved.
As part of that zeitgeist, there was a movie of which ‘There She Goes’ was its theme. “So I Married an Axe Murderer” If ever there was a movie that captured that time and place for me, that was it. I loved it back then as did my Girlfriend. Tho not sung by the La’s in the movie, it still worked. I can’t say if that move still stands the test of time as I’ve not seen it in years, but the song does.
They knew it would be a song that did well, but they never realised that it would last so long. It did.

Eels – Birds-
Simple pleasures they say..
Mark E. shares with us his love of birds and it’s gleefully that you’ll be humming along this sweet little tune.
Plus, I heard, that with the confinement and the general desertion of the town the little birdies are out and about. So enjoy.
Althought maybe this all business of “if you small and on a search/ I’ve got a feeder for you to perch on”. is all a sexual innuendo….? All the same, good fun…

Shame, Shame, Shame – Shirley & Co.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6qeNU1N2DII
There’s certain disco tracks from the 70s that for me, spark off distant memories of feeling pure childhood joy. Even though he’s not credited on the title of this track, I think it’s the male singer, (a Cuban-born guy called Jesus!), who steals the show and elevates it to another level. A last-moment stand in. Plus he did it in just one take.
‘ “Sylvia was the producer; she looked at me and said, ‘This guy can’t sing no more, he’s too old. Go in there and shout a little bit.’ I was stoned out of my mind. Shirley started singing, then I started screaming and shouting, having a good time. You could look through the glass, and they’re going crazy in there. I said, ‘Okay, let me do it now’, and she said, ‘No! That was a perfect take!’ ‘

@ Scottser – Great track!
I might be late to the party but here goes… MTV Classic (?) is currently showing best of the 80’s which in my opinion is questionable. But how and ever, today I sat down, pressed 707 on the remote and lo and behold Phil Oakey and Giorgio Moroder ” Together in Electric Dreams” was on. My daughter, who has been stuck to the sofa since last week actually raised her head from the phone and said ” that’s a really feelgood song”. And do you know, it is. Its a big 99 icecream in a cone with extra chocolate sauce. Its the sugar rush from fizzpops, sherbert dips and a strangely blue coolpop that was always at the end of the freezer. Listen and enjoy.

sorry , ‘they’re’ all hanging out here
My first motorbike was a Suzuki 250 and she was old at that stage, but a few months ago I heard Christy Moore’s song https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gGkBxb_HqFE, on the radio and I cried laughing because the lyrics are so wonderfully funny, anthropomorphic and personal to any teenager who’s saved up and spent their first few quid on something they’ve always wanted – be it, car, motorbike, pony, calf or concert tickets.

I wasn’t much into music when I was a young fella, I did have a thing for Any Dream Will Do from Joseph and his Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and also used to get angry if my brother would not let me play Suicide is Painless from the M.A.S.H. soundtrack but to answer the call of this challenge my selection takes me back 30 years to circa 1989 and a Thursday evening. In our house, back then, we only had 2 channels and Thursday evening at 8pm on Network 2 meant Baywatch! Now RTE is not great today but was even worse back then so Baywatch was prime time viewing. For 1 hour I was whisked away to the west coast of America, always with the sunshine, beautiful women in utterly wonderful swimsuits, “Scarab” speedboats, Air Wolf style helicopters that you might jump from into the sea to make a rescue! and your office was one of those cool watch towers. Oh to be Hobie, Mitch Buchannon’s son, and grow up to be the Captain of the lifeguards, with Summer Quinn or Shauni as my lovely wife . . .ahhhhhh . . . .well anyway, anyone who remembers Baywatch will know what the opening few bars of this song means and watch out for the piano solo around 2:00 :-)
Baywatch Intro Song – I’m Always Here by Jimi Jamison
“Some people stand in the darkness
Afraid to step into the light
Some people need to help somebody
When the edge of surrenders in sight
Don’t you worry
It’s gonna be alright
Cause I’m always ready
I won’t let you out of my sight”
