This evening.

Via RTÉ:

RTÉ broadcaster Claire Byrne has told colleagues that she tested positive for Covid-19.

In an email to staff, she wrote: “As some of you may know, I tested positive for Covid-19.

“I made the decision that I wanted you all to know this at the earliest opportunity. The HSE contact tracing system worked with me over the weekend.”

Ms Byrne said that she was now well, and through the peak of the condition, and wanted to thank everyone who had expressed support, in particular those in RTÉ who spent the weekend dealing with issues that arose as a result of her diagnosis.

She said she was getting better and was working with Medmark and her own GP who will assess when it is safe to return to work.

This is unfortunately not surprising or unexpected. Given her interaction with so many people, and her previously reported self isolation.

Also gives a good marker for the time frame of testing and results.

I wish her well and a speedy recovery

Still, this is great investigative journalism. Do you realise the BBC doesn’t do that anymore.

      1. Slightly Bemused

I enjoyed the programme tonight. I thought she was very honest, and the matter of fact way she dealt with it was actually reassuring.

She seems to have lost the lamp, though!

Claire Byrne AND RTE doctor on the telly CIara Kelly.

What are the odds? In a country of millions of people, with a very small number diagnosed to date.

    This virus seems awfully selective.

Or else – heaven forbid, we all have it, and RTE stars are getting preferential treatment with regard to tests

You keep making this same point but it’s not a conspiracy theory. When you say ‘a very small number diagnosed’ do you mean the official figures? You do realise the actual number of infected is a multiple of the official ‘tested’ number?

    2. Jeffrey Boggart

We knew there was a case or more in RTE buildings. From there I imagine a lot will test positive in RTE circles. Ciara Kelly sure seemed to have been fast tracked for the testing>result.

  3. Howya

She coughed while sitting next to a senior politician two weeks ago on CBL. She was isolated in a shed last week. She only got results Saturday. Difficult contact tracing there.

Ah, rest easy folks, Claire Byrne Live’s..

..Will be returning soon, back into your niche retro lifestyle version of reality, set in Ireland during the mid to late 20th century.

Is Dr. Ciara working for that Irish music magazine now?…

Presume the camera and sound operators from the isolation broadcast in her shed have it too?

  6. some old queen

I really need to call RTE out on their coverage of COVID-19. Because retailers and shops close does not mean their employees have lost their jobs- it just means those employees are unable to work for a period of time.

RTE should know better than using this sort of loaded terminology but clearly- they do not.

Has Claire Byrne LOST HER JOB?

    1. Ringsend Incinerator

      No.

She just happened to have that multi TerraByte-speed connection and audio-visual equipment to make high definition broadcasts already installed in her garden shed.

      1. some old queen

Seriously, this was the first thing on the news- MACONALDS STAFF HAVE LOST THEIR JOBS- what purpose does this fake hysteria serve?

        1. Ringsend Incinerator

An important nugget of information all the same.

It’s created a flurry of activity in Dun Laoghaire as people rush to beat the deadline. It’s some shake up.

it’s important to remember that the ‘suburban grass cutting season ‘ has just started so a case of the sniffles and itchy eyes is most likely a little allergy and not the dreaded virus

  8. Ringsend Incinerator

Excuse me, but can anyone NAME the other people in Ireland diagnosed with Corona Virus, off the top of their heads?

Why are these two media numpties allowed to publicize their situation?

        1. Rob_G

That 28 year-old lad in Cork.

          – do you think that ordinary people would, as a rule of thumb, go mad contacting the media if they happened to fall ill?
